I may be alone but I still can’t believe we are moving forward with Jaylon and not LVE

Man, LVE still has this coming season to prove that he’s worth a new contract in Dallas. The team even said they want him to be there for 5 more years. It’s all up to him.

Smith also has a chance to turn things around. He just has to play better.

They both can bet on themselves.

‘Dallas hasn’t chosen anyone over anyone at this point.
I agree, but I think the OP is looking at Jaylon’s contract as the team’s commitment to him, when the contract came before Jaylon’s decline and LVE has not been offered a new contract. I am sure that Jaylon’s contract is considered a mistake at this point. They didn’t repeat the same mistake with LVE, but he might get a reasonable contract if he can return to playing at the level that he was playing at during his rookie season and stay healthy.

There's also the Jerry factor. Moving on from Jaylon would require Jerry admitting he made a mistake paying him. I'm having trouble remembering the last time Jerry moved on from a mistake.

I’d say Taco Charlton. But that was draft capital vs salary cap money as well.

I’m honestly not sure of the OP’s intent with this thread. They felt concerned enough to start a thread based on a flawed premise but then had nothing else to say afterward?

Seems odd to me. At best.

The Jaylon contract confused me more than any dumb contract Jerry has ever given out. it seemed to me that he was giving Jaylon an undeserved contract for two reasons A) to
Spite zeke b) to double down on his dumb decision to use a second round pick on him.
His play was good one year and terrible since and he plays a position that is among the cheapest in football. LVE seemed to be a superior player minus injuries. I just don’t see any reason to pay either of them though. You can get starting LBs in the mid and late rounds every year or there are always some decent ones available in FA. It’s like RB, just not a position you pay a premium for unless you have once in a lifetime talent, which we do not.

And they just hate these two all of a sudden, or more so than ever,
I sure hope the cross section of fans on here are like this all over the world. Pretty pathetic if it is.

I don't know. I think fans remember that having Lee injured all the time was not good for team & smith does not appear to have any instincts. He just waits until the play passes him by. Time for lbs who make plays downfield, and create turnovers.

best ability is availability.
one is...the other 50/50.
but we're a long way from final chapters and farewell tours.

I just don't think a team needs 4 top LBs, no matter how good they are. Having 2 is enough. I'd like to turn the other two into defensive line somehow. The other thing about LBs on the Cowboys is I have been hearing for months how LVE and Smith only stink because they get no protection from the DL. If you believe that, then how does Parsons help? Are we that certain Bohanna is going to provide better protection than Woods did? Why? because he is fat? because we picked him? because he did well in college. We don't know that. He is a 6th round pick. Poe was fat too and he was terrible. We can hope, but that is all we have right now.

I heard a talking head on NFL channel saying Jamin Davis is going to me the NFC defensive rookie of the year in 2021 because he plays behind a top DL. Based on previous defenses of LVE and Jaylon Smith, this sounds like the same argument.

Jaylon and LVE played best under Kris Richard's play calling.

Dan Quinn's play calling will be very much the same just more complete.

Jaylon Smith and LVE are gonna have a great season alongside Parsons and Cox.

Lve has his problems but smith is a bigger liability on the field than LVE imo
Kinda obvious that LVE is gone after this year since we didn’t pick up his option
If Cox plays well and can be a 3 down guy they may both be gone after this year

Not to mention that if Dallas had picked up LVE’s option, everyone would be saying they’re stupid for doing it because he can’t stay healthy and hasn’t played well since his rookie season.

There would be fans saying that Jerry picked up the option just because he didn’t want it to look like he made a mistake in drafting him.

The team is finally not coddling guys who don’t deserve it. Good job as far as I’m concerned.
The draft of Parsons made the decision very easy not to pick up the option
I think they played it perfectly
They waited to see if they got a LB in the draft and once they did they made the right decision
I know LVE technically has a chance to save his job. But in reality you just saved having to give him a second contract with parsons
In a perfect world the only guys you give a second contract to is the guys you can’t replace. Like Martin
You can’t always have a guy in place but in this case we do

This correct, but LVE’s injuries and Jaylon’s decline in play wasn’t due to Richard’s leaving . Quinn’s scheme may put both in a position to play better, but it won’t lower the chances of LVE’s injuries or improve Jaylon’s lack of instincts or inability to take on blockers .

Last year was a crazy year for the Cowboys in just about every way it could possibly be. We shouldn't judge any of our players based off last season. We somehow went 6-10 last year and will hopefully have healthier LB's, QB, tackles, RB, and that's not even considering the rookies/FA's we've added. There's potential for a very, very good team.

Quinn has every right to bring in his type, but they aren't going to be pro-ready out of the gate. Jaylon and LVE's jobs are not in jeopardy this year. Next year might be another story for LVE. If he has a great year, the Cowboys might not be able to afford to keep him and if he's bad he's out for sure. He has to be the just-right amount of good to get a reasonable extension after this season.
This year they are safe
Anyone wanting to cut either now is crazy
Injuries can happen that makes having them important
Contracts make cutting guys complicated too
LVE will play this year and I hope he has a career year
But it will be one of thems last year
Probably LVE since he will now be a FA next year

So why was Jaylon one of the NFL's top tacklers last year? The DL needs to do their jobs better to allow the LB's to do their jobs better.
I will wait until to see how they both do this year before I say it is time for them to go. We know what a mess the defense was last year scheme and injuries.

I don't think anything has been predetermined. How things play out with them, and the LBs we drafted this year will determine how the Cowboys deal with these guys next offseason.

1. The draft picks have yet to prove anything. TBD how Cox fares with his shoulder/run defense and Parsons looks to be a stud but tbd.
2. Jaylon smith has an option to not guarantee his 2022 salary if they cut him within 5 days of the 2022 season(March)
3. LVE can always be re-signed, or tendered. Just giving him 100 guaranteed salary in 2022 now was risky, especially at the amount of 9.2mil
4. LVE along with Jaylon will be given the chance to compete for starting/good share of snaps. Now, it's up to them to prove it rather than be given it.
5. IMO the team likes LVE but business is business on the 5th year option. Still think a re-signing is in the cards as long as he shows that he can stay healthy/be an impact player.
