did I like horn and surtain? yes. did I like Parsons? yes. my concern with parsons were the off the field character issues and rumors about that. I believe you build inside out. given the DL class was weak, then LB was the next logical step in the process. plus this was a deep CB class, not deep at all in DL as mentioned and only 2-3 deep at LB, so you find your LB in the first round and you can get great value in second round for CB which is what we did. I think they did well in the draft.....

I’ll admit that it took me a while to ‘get it’ and see what they were doing in this draft. But I now see what they wanted to accomplish and it looks quite a bit better to me as well.

How they played this close to vest was great. They wanted parsons all along. They knew how bad our linebackers were and can’t stay healthy. One can’t stay healthy snd the other hasn’t been the same since injury.

drafting parsons early then cox falling in their laps shows what they think of lve and jaylon moving forward.

I still think parsons was a steal at 12. He was considered top 5 for a long time even without playing last season. If he played how he did previously he would have solidified his top 5 status.

you are guessing!

the call was not made until you prove it was, wheres your proof? keep trying to get in the interworking's or the general process of peoples minds and making assumptions, doesnt make it true..

move on you know what they want you to know OK FAN... FAN behind Keyboard sitting here making wholesale assumptions as usual trying to create narratives most of which are not true, simply hyperbole by fans thinking they know what goes on over at the star..they do NOT..they let you know what they want you too..

it was reported the DC had more then general interest in Parsons at 10 before the draft we discussed it days leading up to the draft, he was on most GMs boards, most fans knew his value and all things being equal with Surtain, Horn , and Parsons outside of the nonsense about pitts and Sewell being there which we all knew would not, they were taking one of those 3 defenders as their first round choice and none would have been consolation prizes.. Cb seemed more of need so it was the obvious choice but in no way makes Parsons some guy they settled on..

IMHO and Yes opinion not facts a gut feelings

i dont believe Parsons kept them from moving to 20 as options down there were close at LB or say a guy like Barmore, Farley, or Moehrig or another LB at 20 not a big drop off all would have filled need on defense and not much of each..

this is why i feel they were NOT offered the deal for whatever reason.. sure our top 3 defenders would have been gone but those guys would have bene options and getting all that draft stock , while a tough decision it would have been considered and yet we havent heard ONE Peron with indie knowledge mention it was offered to the DC not from CHI , NY , or Dallas not one real official comment on it..
Yes I'm guessing.....by applying logic.

I did not speak in absolute terms.

Someone in particular keeps saying that this offer was not made and was publicly stated as so. No source or link provided upon request.

THATS not a guess?

Of course we will never know what really happened, but we can take what we know and what makes sense and debate to a reasonable conclusion.

My point on saying it never happened is the same.as your point toward my post.....we don't KNOW what happened...yet you're trying to tell me it's OK to accept one side of the argument, but not the one that logic supports.

Let me ask you personally.....you're Chicago. You like Fields. You know you have to go up to get him. You actually DID make a deal at 11 to get him.

Are you saying that making a call to Dallas at 10 at some point prior to the draft didn't even happen??

Of course it did.

Simply, if Dallas turned them down that's fine....but the call probably happened and the offer was probably made.

I think Cox falling in their laps was huge. Truly a gift and something they didn’t ‘plan’ on happening. His addition helps the linebacker overhaul to happen much sooner. They have great depth this year and plenty of options next year.

Plus, they've specifically mentioned doing exactly this in previous drafts: If it's close, take the thinner position first, knowing that there will be more good players at the deeper position later in the draft.

And BTW, I don't trust the Joneses' salesmanship either, but David Moore was saying live during the draft that they loved Parsons and might have taken him even if Horn and Surtain had been available. So maybe this isn't just BS.

They passed on two QBs. Jackson, because they traded that pick to Baltimore, and then potentially Fields this year. The year Mahomes and Watson went, the Eagles picked 14th and Mahomes and Watson went before that pick. They also had picks after Herbert and Allen went too. So I am not sure they passed on as many QBs as you claim.
The Eagles, Football Team, and the Giants but ok.

giants also passed on Fields more stunning that trade down wa snot genius could cost them a future franchise qb or better player then a WR they could have got in the 2nd round..all those applauding that trade with CHI needs to rethink, it was not smart..betting on DJ and passing on better talent at more critical positions was not smart..
You can't assume that Fields is better than Jones or will be.

Gettleman has been all in on Jones all along (overdrafted) and it's way too soon to give up on him.

What he actually did here was hedge his bet....with the extra first he now has ammo to go get someone in the next draft if Jones appears to be regressing.

That's very close to my take as well.

At first I was upset they didn't do a deal with Chicago (I think their QB situation may lead to a long year)...but after learning more and thinking on it....I'm happy with Parsons.

I dont generally like corners super early, so I was never wild about the Surtain/Horn situation.

In fairness, Philly had already taken Wentz and it didn't become obvious they needed to move on until this past season. They have most likely three number one picks next year where they can probably get any QB they want with the draft arsenal they have.
Yup, and I have every bit of confidence they will screw that pick up also.

Really one first

People seem to forget that Parsons was a top 5 prospect and best defensive player after his sophomore season. He will remind everyone once the season start.
People seem to remember it was after his sophomore year and he didn’t play any football. Take off from your job for a full year and see how well you do after missing that much time.

Im really over the "fit the scheme" thing. Its all we heard with Marinelli and he passed over great football players for other guys he perceived as better for his scheme.

Problem with the Cowboys FO is what many have been saying for a while. They have NO plan. They just bring in coordinators every few years and get the guy what he likes. Then rinse and repeat.

Pitt is a great example of a plan. They are a 3-4 defense and that's it. They are always drafting guys for that defense because its always what they do. They pride themselves on defense.

I wouldnt say Cowboys look for the "fit the scheme" thing. I think Cowboys have been drafting best player available lately. Parson when LB wasnt the biggest need - CeeDee when WR wasnt the biggest need

I still can't believe they passed on Fields. I was sure that was who they were trading up for.

Hard to believe they think that much of Hurts.

I think Joseph may have been the gift, as I'd speculate that he is a likely day one starter.

Parsons probably won't be...although they will probably use him a lot.

If Joseph didn't have certain questions (which seem like pure nonsense) and remained at LSU, let's say, he would have been an easy first rounder.

The reason he wasn't discussed much around here is most of us assumed we would get Surtain or Horn.

I personally like him better than Surtain (low ceiling lack of ballhawk skills) and I think he is more polished than Horn.

As far as Cox, sure. Quality young depth behind a guy on a one year deal. They have done that in several spots. Impressive.

They just need to not be so hesitant to give guys a chance.

I think that they feel obligated to give Hurts at least one full season of opportunity. They used a 2nd round pick on him and then traded away Wentz. They have to see what they’ve got.

It’s possible that Parsons was rated higher then the corners on the Cowboys board but if Surtain/Horne were at 10 they would have been the pick. I also believe the Cowboys would have drafted Zaven Collins if the corners and Parsons were picked before 12. I am stunned the Giants passed on Parsons.
This is exactly what I think. I remember in the post rd 1 press conference Stephen said that Parsons was the highest-rated "pure talent" (or something along those lines) on their board at the time. That doesn't mean he was the number 1 on their board in the order that they would pick them. It is very possible that if a corner was there they would have chosen him before Parsons when taking the need at the positions into account.

I think overall Parsons would be rated higher than both CBs but i would’ve taken Surtain if possible just because of the price of a top tier CB is much higher than a LB.
however, it went how it went and if we use Parsons properly and rush him occasionally from the end, he could end up to be quite an impactful pick.
I did a survey of player rankings before the draft and Parson was the highest-rated defensive player about 70% of the time.
Not really sure why people are surprised he was top of their defensive board.

Also, given their ongoing dialog with (and reassurances from) New York at 10 and the near certainty that Fields was going at 11, I didn't see the trade back from 10 to 12 to be at all risky.

I actually see the reverse of that. I definitely think Parsons is out there day one while I could see them waiting on Joseph for a guy they know like Brown (not that I’d agree with it).

If Joseph didn't have certain questions (which seem like pure nonsense) and remained at LSU, let's say, he would have been an easy first rounder.

No doubt. And some still thought he might go in round one.

The reason he wasn't discussed much around here is most of us assumed we would get Surtain or Horn.

I personally like him better than Surtain (low ceiling lack of ballhawk skills) and I think he is more polished than Horn.

He also comes with a higher bust factor. That’s why he was still there in round 2.

As far as Cox, sure. Quality young depth behind a guy on a one year deal. They have done that in several spots. Impressive.

Absolutely. Especially on a defense that set records for ineptitude. No jobs should be secure, and I hope they’re not.

Not sure why folks buy any of this. Every year, teams (including the Cowboys) post draft will talk about how they got the guy they were target all along, or that the guy they ended up drafted was actually rated higher.

I will say, if you take the report for face value, I think the guy they targeted was Jaycee Horn (I preferred Surtain). I think it’s possible they may have had Parsons rated higher or equal to Surtain.

The problem with the cowboy drafts and the predominant reason for the thin rosters is an obsession with risks on boom or bust players. We do not have a good balance of character traits and football measurables in our scouting. I am stoked that Joseph can run fast, but there are legit character concerns. He got suspended from LSU's program, transferred to UK, and played one season. All scouting reports describe him as immature and lacking discipline. Thats a tough kid to project and we have a new coaching staff with zero proven processes or tradition of developing players like him. So, why draft him? The reason is simple........Jerry would rather hit a home run than a double.
They drafted boy scouts under Garrett, where did that get them?
