It's sounding to me like we're going to have a lot of 'specialist' players on this defense. Guys who will have very specific roles and packages depending on down, distance, and situation. Much more specialization than I can remember.
Yep, and it looks like a couple of positions may be merging....kind of.

The hybrid thing. Makes sense with all the passing.

No one wants to actually talk about the OP’s topic lol? Lewis said earlier in the year in an interview after resigning that Dan Quinn told him he will be able to fly around and make plays rather than be solely a traditional CB.

Lewis is probably our best tackler in the secondary and has shown the ability to be a versatile chess piece like when he took Kamara out of the passing game in 2018. Seems to me Quinn did a real dive into what puts Lewis in the best position to succeed and is applying it. IMO this plan for Lewis was the biggest reason he was resigned, they won’t make him solely a slot CB because he would be a pure backup.

In this pseudo S/Nickel role J.Lew is in a good position to make plays and succeed.
yes figuring out how to best use a guy is not something the cowboys were good at in the past, maybe quinn can do that.
I wont judge till I see how he does this season.

He only played 8 snaps in that game against Kamara...

Either " being in a box " spells safety - to which why would a guy that size be best in the box ?

And wouldn't Lewis be better suited to single high safety in the middle of the field - per his ball hawk and best forwarding skills ?
im betting that not the case but being brought off the edge from the slot occasionally sure, we are overflowing with box S and hybrid SS/LB types, no way thats where Lewis will be 90% of the time..

unless it's a position switch where he has more a chance to compete for a long term starter, i just dont get why they re-signed him to that kind of contract .
Even if Brown was outta the picture, Lewis would still being going up against 3rd rd draftee Lashon Wright for that 3rd CB role, .and then that would be big money to a 4th CB ?

several times i've always heard and observed Stephen Jones implying that you don't give average players good money.
well Jordan is an average player, a backup reserve, a limited pure slot guy but they gave him a contract like he was gonna be one of their 3 best starting CBs.?

Unless it's a move to FS where he could compete against 1 year rental or prove it with FA vet Damontae Kazee, i just don't see it .. i just dont get ..
Relative to other CBs the salary is small.

Veteran CBs with any ability at all get paid good money. It's a premium position.

The outside starters for game are likely Brown and Diggs.

I think this talks to the amount of zone we will play, particularly in the middle of the field in comparison to the outside corners. I think he’ll play a hybrid corner position that switches between man in slot, spying the RB, dropping into covering and being sent on blitzes a bit like Honeybadger but much more cornerish.

Lewis should be ideal to be playing that spot. He knows he can handle it.

He's quick and not afraid to tackle RBs and WRs in and around the box.

He is not great at tackling. He is frequently out of position and does not seem to have the recovery speed needed to make up for his physical limitations. Different folks may see things differently. I was high on him at first, but he has continued to underwhelm.

The contract is baffling to me.

As I been saying I have a tempered enthusiasm. Or trying to keep it that way. May be hard to do once TC starts as I get pumped for the season.

A lot of folks keep posting how Lewis is a lot better than I think he is, so I can't wait to see how Quinn uses him.

Just like a lot of our guys he was so much better under marinelli, I believe Quinn will use him right, he’s a much better fit in this scheme. Anthony brown will be gone next year. That’s 4.2 million dollars saved right there

I think it could be both good and bad. Specialization could be good in certain situations and create favorable matchups, but it's also difficult to pull off, especially if an opponent knows what you're trying to do and counters it by going up-tempo offensively. That would limit substitutions and specialists getting on and off the field.
