Why? In the end, what difference does it make if Tom Brady was a 1st-rounder or a 6th-rounder?

If you're trying to evaluate the draft process (rather than the draft class), then maybe you want to focus on when guys are taken...but even then, being able to find useful pieces late is valuable and maybe even more difficult than picking goot players up front.

Why?

Because you’re missing on a premium pick when you have a greater opportunity to “hit” on a player.

Of course hitting on an elite player in the 6th round is a unicorn. Hitting on your 1st rounders should be more routine.

But that doesn’t answer the question. If two draft classes yield the same value overall but draft A had a first-round bust and draft B didn’t, you seem to be saying that you would rate draft class B higher, which doesn’t make sense to me.

All of these rankings should also include UDFAs. The New York Jets had the worst draft of 2018 and their current roster has only one player of note to show for it. In the 6th round they drafted NT Folorunso Fatukasi and he has developed into a dominant player at what can be described as a menial position in 2021. What does a dominant nose tackle get you in 2021.

Look

3- Sam Darnold- the Jets traded 2 seconds and pick 6 (Quentin Nelson)- the return a 2nd, 4th and 6th.
72- Nathan Shepherd- a DT who has made no impact- not to mention why are you drafting a DT after a franchise QB. Waste of a pick.
107- Chris Herndon TE- had a great rookie year- nothing but a suspension since. The Jets signed UDFA Kenny Yeboah to the largest UDFA deal this year showing Herndon's position with the team.
179 Parry Nickerson CB- was cut and is playing well with the Saints- his being cut reflects the extent of the poor decision making.
180 Folorunso Fatukasi- dominant player and a less than impactful position.
207 Trenton Cannon RB- cut

The Jets are the worst because they drafted Darnold at 3 after trading 2 second round picks too move up. Darnold was turned into a 2nd, 4th and 6th. Who thinks that is a good return for the 3rd overall pick? Jamal Adams, taken at 6 the year before, was traded for 2 first round picks. Thhe Jets essentially have pennies on the dollar to show for Darnold who amounts to their first and second picks.

All the Jets have to show for the 2018 draft is a defensive lineman and a tight end with a chance of being cut in training camp. Their first and second rounders were one player traded for a second round pick. The rest of the players were cut. Find a team with less to show for this draft than the Jets.

Nose tackles are "less than impactful".

What he really means is he can't see their impact. Its too tough for him.

But let me guess, that dude lined up on the sideline way away from the football brings some real impact? Amirite?

Go tell any football coach how nose tackles just aren't impactful. They could use a little levity in their work day.

Then explain to me why NTs are never drafted in premium rounds- moron. What I see is a loser who spends all their time on a message board. You need to get a life and it is pathetic you spend as much time on a message board as you do. You are the sole member because you are the sole person that cares. Your claim to fame pathetic. So dont respond to my post because I dont want to talk to losers with nothing better to do than brag they have nothing going on in life that they post constantly on a board. So go take your little online profile that people laugh at and take it to someone who cares. Do you get people laugh at you- they look at you and see you have nothing better to do than be on a message board.

Now go see if those government funds made it into your account. I dont like you so how about we just dont interact.

People who can go outside dont care about that. You have no life and are pathetic- nobody will talk to you in the real world so you created an online persona. Your likes = a virgin who will die a virgin.

Do you go out to the bar and tell women about your likes on a message board? I mean before they turn around and run away. Man you are cool- I can imagine you getting up in the morning looking in the mirror and saying "yeah I spend all my time on a message board". My god you are sad.

I did answer the question.

Percentage wise, you should always be "hitting" on your 1st round pick moreso than a 6th or 7th rounder because it's earlier in the draft and you have a greater opportunity to select a good player from a larger pool of talent.

If you fail to do that you missed out on an opportunity.

Two things can be equally true: 1) you found a gem in the 6th round; and 2) you blew an opportunity to get a quality player in the 1st round.

You can't look at each pick in a vacuum.

Yes, but if the overall draft CLASS is comparable, and one team got the stud in the 1st round but got nothing from later picks, and the other team picked a bust in the 1st round but found the stud in the 6th, why would you rate one CLASS over the other?

It's also not clear to me why you think picking a good player in the 1st round is skill but picking good players on day 3 is luck.

This is a total strawman by you.

Imagine going to a grocery just as it opens and the butcher has totally restocked to steaks.

You have a greater chance at selecting a top choice, Grade A steak because the steaks haven’t been already sorted and picked through. If you fail to do so, you’ve greatly missed out on an opportunity.

Now, imagine you go back later in the day and the meat aisle has been pilfered through. You’re now in the pork section, but you randomly find a good steak that was accidentally left there by another shopper.

That’s the concept.

Impressive draft.
Our front office has a lot of issues
But the draft is not one of them.
The entire end result draft? Sure. Can’t say that about individual picks in the early rounds. LVE was a huge miss and gamble, Escobar, Jaclyn Smith, Bruce Carter the LB from North Carolina some years back, list goes on. This franchise screws up 2nd rnd picks ON PURPOSE. I’m totally convinced of that.
