Big failure by the GM

So, you masquerade as a Cowboys fan, but don't watch the games? Hmmmm..

The "games" start September 9th. Last night was a televised scrimmage.

I barely watched any of the second half. Usually I saw someone being interviewed or DiNucci throwing an incompletion. Exciting stuff.

Questioning someone's fandom over not watching that exhibition is almost as funny as thinking Dallas should've drafted Mac Jones at #10.

Gilbert should be an emergency 3rd QB only, Rush should be a graduate assistant coach in college, and DiNucci should be playing flag football.

I'd take Blake Bortels in a heartbeat and let him compete with Gilbert, who looked tame with our OL backups being so inept.

We'd best hope Dak recovers from his injury woes and manages to remain healthy throughout a real long season ahead.

Well— we signed the best possible vet backup we could last year. How’d that work out again? Lol.

If we absolutely are desperate we can sign Bortles or trade for Foles. Just not going to wring my hands and whine about it.

Yes, Gilbert is fine. The other two don't belong in the NFL.

It's a little alarming that DiNucci was a pet cat for a supposed QB guru like McCarthy. I try to give the benefit of the doubt scouting players. We all miss a lot but I just don't see any traits in him that would make anyone believe he could potentially be an NFL QB.

A lot of difference in NCAA film vs NFL game time. McCarthy definitely did a sentimental home town type pick.

Gilbert was fine. Even without zeke, coop, lamb, Tyron, Martin. The other two are projects. Rush however seems to have hung around far to long to be not any better than he is. Probably at his ceiling.

With all that, Its preseason game 1. vanilla offense. vanilla defense. limited personnel groupings. I don't quite think it's time to push the panic button on OMG we don't have a back up. Especially when there havent even been cuts to rosters yet. Right now theres a small pool of available qbs, rivers, RG3, etc. Dance with the ones that brought you for now and see what happens on cutdown day. Someones bound to be available.

There are not 32 quality starting NFL QB's in the league.

Foles was an extreme exception as was Warner when Green went down. You lose the trigger man for any length of time, draft talk time. The only teams that can overcome that are built for that and even NE could not overcome that last season. There really aren't any defenses good enough to hold the fort with a backup QB.

You want to get technical about the job of the GM, he was damned lucky to find this QB, he wanted two others that aren't even in the league 5 years later.

In fact, when can you say, other than Aikman who was picked by Johnson and he wasn't even all in on him, that this brain trust has done well in the QB arena without some blind luck? Romo was here because of Payton and rumor has it that Prescott is here because of Wade Wilson.

The GM is at fault for playing GM instead of being a full time one.

Some did but the only one I saw really watching it was John Lynch when they were interviewing him, he actually stopped them when a Steeler made a run. I was laughing at the attempts Aikman was making trying to sell that game. Aikman even commented on how hard it had been to stay focused on the game with all of the stuff going on in the booth.

Those inductees will have Saturday and Sunday to be interviewed, that was a cluster last night.

The QB play last night was nothing less than atrocious. How the team could be this far in to training camp with these backup QB’s and think that they could play is mind boggling. They’ve seen them every OTA, mini-camp and every day in training camp. Really disappointed they haven’t gotten a decent backup from day one so that he could get acclimated with the offense. They better get off their rear ends fast and bring someone in because if Dak goes down for a few games, we ain’t winning squat.

In watching the 1st Half last night, I didn't see much in Gilbert as he looked indecisive in spite of his stat line: 9 of 13 for 104 Yards. Add to that his fumble in the Red Zone (due to taking a sack) as well as his costly sack near the Goal Line which took points off the board so in spite of it being the first pre-season game, so while Gilbert pushes the ball downfield more than the other QB's I am just not seeing much from Gilbert to feel confident.

As for the other two QB's, Cooper Rush didn't make any mistakes but also didn't really push the ball downfield as he finished 8 of 13 for 70 Yards. That said Rush was actually driving the offense into the Red Zone and completed a nice 4th down throw but unfortunately WR Turner fumbled the ball and cost Dallas possession and points. As for Ben DiNucci, he was able to push the ball downfield but unfortunately his passing efficiency wasn't very good (7 of 17 for 89 Yards) and had a costly INT as well as a fumble in the game which hurt him. That said, DiNucci did at least offer up a rushing threat (2 carries for 34 Yards) that neither Gilbert nor Rush were able to provide.


All that said, if none of these 3 QB's step it up in their next pre-season game then Dallas better start giving a serious look at bringing in a veteran QB by way of a free agent signing or a trade because Dak's arm issue went from just a simple strain needing a few days rest to now what is being referred to as a "baseball throwing type injury" wherein he is being shut down for a few weeks.

so I will use the dalton excuse. none of the top 3 WRs. one TE of sorts, no top 2 RBs, missing OL men....yes, it was expected to be a mess. and yes, it was a mess. no denying that.

but I am 100% with you. regardless. we know the Nooch is not NFL worthy. we know Rush is just a camp arm. and we know what gilbert is after 7 years and having been out of NFL until Dalton got injured and we called him....so yeah, FO has to be better than this.

I don't know why he wouldn't, it's a business and he already knows the offense and players. I don't think he wanted to leave but they weren't going to pay him and Dalton wasn't the reason they had a crummy season and he knows that.

at this point, nobody will sign him if he doesn't want to be the back and he has to wait until an injury happens and the teams are desperate and bring him in.

Did you see Amari Cooper out there? No.
Did you see Lamb out there? No.
Did you see Gallup out there? I think I might have seen him in for a couple plays, so basically no.
Did you see Zeke out there? No.
Did you see our starting T or RG out there? No.

I realize the Steelers didn't have all their starters out there the entire time on defense but I thought Gilbert looked fine all things considered. It's not like he had the entire starting offense and a game plan to play with. He wasn't amazing, but most backups aren't otherwise they would be starters.

it was sloppy all around. lots of young, new players vying for position. no game plan. so to expect anything more than what we saw is unreasonable.

where fans will argue over the quality of the game, preseason games, specially the first two are evaluation for the coaches, and their evaluation is often different than what us fans do.
