Well that's the last preseason game.
Who looked good.?
Who looked bad?
Who helped themselves to secure a spot on the team?
Jabril Cox looked good for most of the game, even against the Jags first team offense. I think they need to find a way to get him into games. Mukuamu looked good at times but I was more disappointed with some other players this game. Rush is not a backup QB in this league. Not crazy about Gilbert either but I think I would go with him as the backup. I don't care what happens to DiNucci anymore. He is pretty terrible and looks like he is getting worse. They should not use one of 53 spots on him. He is not Tony Romo or Brett Favre and that talk should stop immediately and forever.
I think the Cowboys defensive players were out of gas in the second half. Guys like Hamilton and Bohanna played the entire game and were pretty tired. It was obvious the Jags were more fresh at the end than the Cowboys since they played their first team early then started rotating players the rest of the game while Dallas played pretty much the same guys the entire game.
I still think there is something missing in Dallas. They don't seem to play with any urgency. If that's the case when their jobs are on the line, then what about when they are safe?
I think Anae may have played himself off the team today. I don't think he made a play the entire game. He still has that terrible habit of leaving the ground like a ballerina as he charges the OT. Physics is working against him once he is off the ground. I was rooting for him but I just don't see him doing anything against 1st team LTs. Then again, who else do they have? I haven't seen much of Basham, and what I did see I was not impressed. I think Lawrence, Gregory, Armstrong and Basham will be the DEs they keep. I think they keep more DTs. Urban and Watkins can both play DE if necessary.
I think Hamilton is ahead of Bohanna at DT. Maybe Bohanna improves with a year or two of experience but right now Hamilton is better. I still think DT is a weakness.
Terence Steele is not very good. Knight has looked better. Nsekhe didn't play today which I assume means he made the team. If I had to pick between Steele and Knight, I guess I would pick Knight. I would also be browsing the waiver wire for another option at swing tackle. I think Josh Ball is going to go on IR because he hasn't played at all. He could be like Connor McGovern who sat out his rookie year too. At OG, I think Connor Williams's job is safe. McGovern is not going to take it. Isaac Alarcon took a step back today. I still like Farniok and I think he is the backup Center. Call me crazy but I trust him there over Connor Williams and his erratic snaps. Hopefully Biadasz stays healthy.
Kelvin Joseph has a groin injury. I think he makes the final 53 then goes on IR for 8 weeks. Groin injuries take a while to heal and can be a nagging problem. The secondary cuts are going to be tough to make. There is talent and potential among the young guys. I would hate to give up on some of them too quickly. I still like Tyler Coyler. He seems to make tackles and he has been playing on special teams but they have too many safeties and someone has to go. Maybe Coyle makes it to the practice squad.
I think Hardy is the RB I would keep over Knox, but I still think they need to keep Ralston. I like a FB who can block, pound the ball and push the pile a yard, and catch the occasional pass out of the backfield. Maybe Hardy goes to the practice squad and Ralston makes the final 53. Knox appears too slow. Once he gets going he seems to have good vision but getting going takes him a moment.
Nothing I have seen in 4 preseason games changes my mind that the Cowboys are a 9-8 team. The defense will be better but not that much better. I am not particularly thrilled with the CBs, outside of Diggs, and I don't know if we saw enough from the safeties to choose who are the best 2.
I think I am leaning towards the crowd that thinks not playing Dak and some other starters together the entire preseason is going to hurt them early. Lawrence looked in sync with his offense today and the Jags will take the field with confidence. The Cowboys offense is going to take the field with question marks floating above their heads.
