NFC East 2021: Eagles the Only Week 1 Winners

jess-haynie__auto-draft-144-scaled.jpg

September 13, 2021 - After one week there's only one winning team in the NFC East. The Philadelphia Eagles trounced the Atlanta Falcons to get their first victory in 2021 and

NFC East play started Thursday night with the Cowboys’ narrow loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Though they didn’t get the win, Dallas’ near upset of the defending champions and Dak Prescott’s huge performance earned them league[wide respect as contenders in 2021.

The Eagles earned their own street cred today, cruising to a 32-6 victory in a huge season debut for QB Jalen Hurts.

Thankfully, Sunday wasn’t such a fun day for the Cowboys’ other rivals.

Washington fell at home 20-16 to the Los Angeles Chargers. Worse than losing the game was seeing QB Ryan Fitzpatrick exit with a hip injury and not return. Fitzpatrick will have an MRI to determine the severity of the injury but it’s feared he could miss some time.

There wasn’t as much drama in New York yesterday. The Giants simply got outclassed by the Denver Broncos in a 27-13 home loss.

25 years of the cowboys sucking

25 years of the eagles being one of the better teams in the league.

Ya know sometimes when I look back to my near death experience a couple decades ago. I wonder. “Did I actually die? Am I in hell?”

The Falcons had a defense as bad, or even worse, than the Cowboy defense last year. The Falcons only added S Grant in the 2nd and a CB in the 4th. The Falcons had no money for FA and only signed a safety from the Panthers, Mike Davis, and Barkevious Mingo.
The Falcons lost LB Neal and safety Kazee.

The Falcons defense might be the worst in the NFL this year. They added TE Pitts and lost Julio. Pitts was plain ordinary in his debut.

The Falcons are one early Ridley or Matty Ice injury away from the top pick in the draft. Falcons are bad, real bad. If the Falcons can’t put up 35+ points, I doubt they can win a game.

Yeah, the Eagles won. They played who was on their schedule and beat the Falcons. Let’s see just what that victory means next week after watching the Falcons.

The Eagles played the worst team of all the NFC East opponents. It is not a surprise they won. The Falcons are terrible.

Having said that I was very impressed with the Eagles offensive line. They are a good unit, I think the best in the NFC East, especially run blocking. They also have a strong defense, although the Falcons weak offensive line did not really test them. And if we are being honest, Hurts played way better than anyone expected. He was poised, accurate, elusive, and he made good decisions. Again, it was the Falcons.

After week 1, which is way too early, I think it is the Eagles and Cowboys at the top of the division and then the WFT, followed by the Giants.

The Cowboys have a strong offense but holes in the offensive line. They pass block very well but run blocking they are hampered by weakness at C and LG, as well as LT where Tyron Smith has lost lateral mobility. They will be a passing team until the OL gets stronger. On defense, they are weak at DT, even with Gallimore, and just average at CB. Safety is still up in the air, but certainly better than last year. The problems the Cowboys defense has are not going to get better with experience. They need new players. Micah Parsons plays the wrong position for maximum impact in the Cowboys defense, but he could help stopping the run. The CBs and DTs are who they are. I do think they will beat the Eagles because the Cowboys are stronger on the OL than the Falcons and they are stronger on the DL than the Falcons, with the exception of Grady Jarrett.

The Eagles have a strong OL, and a lot of speed and quickness on offense. Both of their TEs can block and are an advantage in the running game. The Eagles offense runs a lot of misdirection and option stuff, the kind of plays that often fool the Cowboys defense. Their offense depends on Hurts. If he has time like Atlanta gave him he is good enough to put up a lot of points. On defense the Eagles have a very good DL, although I think Cox is aging. They have strong CBs too. Exactly the opposite of Dallas. What impressed me about the Eagles is how they got stronger at the end of the game. That is a bad sign for the Cowboys. The trait of a winner is to dominate at the end of games and close them out. Of course the Eagles were playing the Falcons. As I watched them beat the Falcons, I asked myself, would the Dallas defense have dominated the Falcons in the 4th quarters like the Eagles did? I am not so sure. One last point, As teams get more game film to study they will figure out the Eagles offense and that will be a greater test for Hurts. Until then, their offense looks really well designed and takes advantage of the strength os their skill players and offensive line strengths.

The WFT. I didn't get to see that game so I cannot really evaluate them. The Chargers are going to be a surprisingly good team this year. Not better than the Bucs but certainly better than the Falcons. Without Fitzpatrick I don't see their offense doing much even with the weapons they have.

The Giants will only go as far as Danny Dimes will take them. At times he looks like a really good QB. He has a strong arm, and he can run surprisingly well. But he is prone to stupid plays and choking up the football. The Bigger problem with the Giants is their offensive line. They are very inconsistent and poor run blockers. I am not a big fan of Saquon Barkley and I think he is overrated. He is a one trick RB. He has speed in the open field. Once he gets going to can simply outrun the defense. But getting going is the problem. He seems slow to pick the hole to run through and allows pursuit to catch up to him. If he gets an open hole and picks it quickly, he can outrun the pursuit and the defense for a big gain. But that did not happen against the Broncos. The Giants have 3 really good receivers and two very good TEs. If Danny Dimes can figure it out, and the OL can block, the Giants could surprise a lot of people. On defense, they are strong in the middle and Black Martinez can tackle sideline to sideline. They have 2 really good CBs and decent safeties. The defense is going to win games for the Giants if they gel.

None of these teams are anywhere near the caliber of the top teams in the NFL. I know the Cowboys went toe to toe with the Bucs, but like we have seen so many times recently, when the game was on the line the Cowboys imply failed. Couldn't get pressure, couldn't cover, couldn't get the opposing offense off the field. IMO, this is a testament to the weaknesses at the LOS. I know, I know, it was Tom Brady, the GOAT. But who are the QBs the Cowboys will face in the playoffs? Does anyone thing they would have better luck stopping Mahomes or Rodgers?

One thing seemed sure about the eagles horizontal offense is that sure tackling will be a must for their opponents.

I don't think we can consider the Falcons a test for the Eagles. I heard they had their 2022 draft board finalized right before opening kickoff.

So...the Eagles played the worse defense in the NFL, but yet yet their OL looks awesome.
The Cowboys played toe to toe and could have won against the best defense in the NFL, but yet our OL is suspect? Again

Enough said.

Why it’s hard to making any accurate statements after 1 game. LAC beat Washington. Herbert looked nice. What does that mean?:

If LAC crushes Dallas, Washington actually had a really nice defensive showing that kept them in the game… maybe WFT is still ready to defend their NFCE crown. This then would also imply TB’s pass defense was a bad as it was last year.

And then if Dallas crushes LAC, that’ll mean the WFT is cooked, and TB is still the giant slayers they were in last year’s playoffs.

And what do Philly plays SF well? The SF that dropped 41 on the lions, and Atlanta is in a tight contest with TB week 2? So many narratives change from so little context we have currently on these games.

I am happy for Jalen Hurts, that guy is one class act the way he handled being benched at Bama and still was cheerleading his team was a most welcome sight to see.

Damn, I hate it when teams I should hate have players that I like. It's not fair. I mean, I had the Skins and Theisman and Riggins, the Giants with Jacobs and the Eagles with McChunky and Bergey. Lurie, please trade Hurts.

I watched all of the East games because of the free Sunday Ticket and I will say that the Eagles played like the most complete team; however, I think all 4 East teams would have beaten the Falcons. They're in the hunt for Ryan's replacement in this upcoming draft.

Everything changes next week is a big possibility. Give it at least 4 weeks and see where teams are, and any consistency in performances.

I was not saying that Dallas OL is good, and the Eagles is not not, not saying that at all.
I was just comparing statements as it stood out to me as a contradiction after game one.

I agree. While it was a close loss, it was still a loss.

I feel too many fans are getting cocky over “hanging in there” with the Superbowl Champs and Tom Brady. Did we play better than expected? Yes. But enough to rave over? No. This way of thinking is dangerous and setting us up for disappointment and failure. I hope Dallas isn’t thinking the same way.

It was pretty easy to see that the eagles had the best chance to win week one.

mid the giants don’t beat Washington Thursday they basically could be looking at another long year and the flip side is if Washington loses they could be in for a long year.

What is also true is that weeks 1-3 usually never mean much of anything going forward.

Dak put up better numbers against a top 10 defense than Hurts did against a bottom 10.

I feel good about that.

Yeah I thought Dallas Oline played well considering their opponent. Philly did have 3 all-pros playing together for the first time since 2019 though.
Meanwhile, NFC West went 4-0 and all 4 teams look like contenders to some degree..
Good luck having 6 divisional games vs those teams.....yikes.

One of the benefits of that for us is they either split with each other, or 2 teams devour the other 2 in divisional matchups.

There were many mistakes that need to be cleaned up.
I am sure TB fans are saying, they should have won by more, and they too have mistakes that need to be cleaned up.

Still a loss, need to improve and get a win. They need to go on and win 3 or 4 in a row to be taken as contenders and as the favorite to win the NFCE.
Actually the next 8 games could be winnable though. Depending what teams any fan think are tough or not. Like at Vikings could be tough. At NE, maybe. Home against Denver.
Just need to see how those teams look over the next weeks ahead. Hard to determine now if these these will be good or bad or in-between. Same for us.

The same people hating on the Eagles for destroying a bad team are the same people that are praising the Cowboys for not getting destroyed by the Bucs and hail it as a "moral victory".

Ya'll need to give credit where it's due. Yeah, the Falcons are a bad team and Matt Ryan looks completely washed, but Hurts looked great and the Eagles did their jobs.
