Is JJ doing a yard sale now?.....watch this.....TRomo was an overpaid, under-performing player given what he was paid to what was expected, especially in BIG games......here they come.....5, 4, 3, 2, 1......

How dare you!

Looks to me like the language in the contract is what led to this.

They didn't want to be on the hook for the injury guarantee for next year.

Am I wrong? I'm still trying to make sense of the timing though.

Jerry can't shut his mouth but he hasn't said anything on this?

There is still a 6.8 million dead cap for 2022.

None of this makes any football sense.

There is more to this.

I hate to say I told all those Jaylon backers so, but I TOLD them SO! Picking INJURED soon to be red shirt draft picks in the first 3 or 4th rounds is stupid as hell. So what did they get from the Jaylon experiment. One good season in which he made the pro bowl and got paid like a mother. Other than that, he's been a total waste! Hope Lessons have been Learned about picking INJURED players during the draft!

Hes made a ton of tackles for the team.

No denying his stats.

And according to others, it's a fan's obligation to defend anything Cowboys - even when it's clearly terrible.

It isn't.

No just the slants. Most of us know that he was not good, but to give others a pass is slanted. Lawrence, being next on the list only solidifies the backwards thinking of some. Putting him and Jaylon in the same category is ridiculous.

Good move Dallas...should have NEVER put that into his contract given the amount and length of the deal.

OK - should have never given the contract period...

I've seen two teams do this with LB, eager to rush to sign them to big deals off one year "wonders".

Miami did it with Kiko Alonso, who was a RFA, similar to Jaylon Smith. Alonso had impressive tackle stats and some other stats like INTs/sacks. Yet, one knack on him was that he had poor reads/instincts and his tackle stats were cleanup tackles down the field.
Miami quickly regretted that deal and traded him for a backup 3-4 edge player from the Saints. Alonso became a depth LB for New Orleans.
Maybe Dallas keeps Smith if he waived his injury guarantee, but IMO he knew the writing was on the wall for 2022 when the team asks him to waive the IG.

Also, kind of surprising at how long Dallas was trying to trade him off. From draft all the way to recent times.

Why wasnt anyone else making "clean up" tackles?

I like Jalen Smith, but the timing is actually perfect. Dallas did everything right.
  1. They let him play as a starter while trying to trade him so he could keep his contract.
  2. They played him as a starter long enough for Parsons to prove himself, for Neal to show he fits as a LB, for Cox to adapt and become ready for playing time, for the new DC to get a feel for LVE and Gifford.
  3. You don’t keep Jalen’s salary on the books as depth.
  4. Every down Jalen plays is a chance for injury, which then chains us to him for over 9 million in 2022. Risking Jalen getting injured this year also risks losing every player we signed to 1-year contracts and our own expiring contracts of guys we’d like to have back. Kazee, Hooker, Neal, Gallup, Wilson? Who can we keep if we are paying Jalen 9 million next year due to injury?
Fans and their “mean” attitudes towards a guy who gave all he had and just wasn’t good enough makes this look bad, but it’s not. We are seeing what we can be with a good defense. We are seeing defenders on 1 year contracts making a difference while also seeing youngsters who need to get on the field. This was simply good business, and no way this happens without Quinn’s blessing, the DC we are giddy about.

It's hard to say you feel sorry for a guy who loses his job but has collected $31 million. Nevertheless, I do feel sorry for him. I never thought he recovered from his leg injury. (Never thought we should have taken him with a second-round pick, but that's water under the bridge.)

He went from slip-sliding across the field because he couldn't redirect his motion to laboring to even run. It was obviously noticeable.

And watching him evade the hole, taking himself out of position and looking generally confused on the field was excruciating.

I wish him well, but this was a decision that was long overdue. And, honestly, I expect our linebacking corps to perform even better. I really think some of those long runs and yac yards were the result of Jaylon being out of position or not making the play.

He has $31 million to swipe, er, wipe his tears on. He won't have to work for the rest of his life, if he's invested his money wisely.

And THAT is the real clear I view.
