Cowboys should have released him before the new league year when they had a chance. He would have been easy to replace cheaply in FA, and they were delusional if they thought they would be able to trade him

They couldn’t. He had wrist surgery in January and couldn’t pass the physical in March so he got his 2021 salary guaranteed.

I'm surprised he was cut NOW.

They kept him after some ridiculously poor play, then he finally has a decent game spying Hurts, THEN they cut him.

After the salary was fully guaranteed.

If you listen to MM this is about having to face some tough roster decisions coming up.

I'm still shocked they did this, but not in the kind of way thats upsetting.

This is it came down to production outweighing salary. Cowboys have guys coming back to the lineup and roster moves had to be made. Giving the play from others at LB Cowboys made the move.

Word came out that they never had the chance to cut him this year.

I think Herd explains it best..

About right, but Jerry wanted to validate his feel good story with Smith, and he is an awful GM overall.

Making himself the GM makes him an awful owner. Being Bob Kraft isn't enough for him. Everyone knows who Kraft is, but Jerry wants his "credit" to somehow prove to the world that the 90s weren't all about Jimmy Johnson.

Smith has been seen shooting the incorrect gaps, flailing at ball carriers without giving real effort to make a play & generally has been more of a hinderance than help thus far in 2021. He’s certainly made a few plays, but the limitations are clear to see & Dallas has better solutions for less money & more importantly, there’s a 2022 financial risk to continuing to put Smith on the field when better options are available.

Just listened to McCarthy about Jaylon’s release. He said what I figured he would about how great a player he is and how well he’s played for the team. He danced around everything with his usual annoying mouth smacks.

Just my opinion... I thought MM did a poor job of explaining that move.

It may haven been a shifty move then, and a big reason they cut him now to avoid a repeat.
Ahh ok.

I really admire the players the staff has drafted and signed in FA, but more importantly how well they prepared them to make plays. And even more importantly, recognizing the talent and giving them playing opportunities instead of playing a guy because he's got a big salary.
