Two important points here:
1) The NFL is about money and, by extension, viewership.
2) Tom Landry wanted to reject the “America’s Team” moniker.
He wanted to reject it because he knew it would put a target on the back of the franchise forevermore. Yes, the Cowboys have more fans than anyone else. They also have more people who hate them and love seeing them lose than anyone else, more than they have fans.
The NFL knows this. You ever notice how all the bad breaks and suspect officiating occurs in nationally televised games? The NFL puts the Cowboys in positions in which they’ll likely lose because it’s the outcome most NFL fans want, meaning more viewership, meaning more money.
If the game is close at all, the Cowboys have the odds stacked against them. And I don’t know that Jerry cares, to be honest. He’s still in the spotlight. He’s still making money hand over fist. We the Cowboys fans get screwed over.
The Cowboys might make the playoffs, but the league will drop them as soon as it can create controversy and headlines.
In the end, the Super Bowl is going to be Brady vs Belichick because the NFL has been milking those cows for thirty years. It only changes if you stop watching. How likely is that?
