This is hardly some brand new method of playing defense against an explosive offense.. It has been around forever.. So I had to take a step back and try to understand why it has been so effective against the Cowboys.. No matter how many times I looked I kept coming back to the same thing.. Patience.. Patience to keep running the ball even if the results are not spectacular. Patience to keep taking the short throws over the middle that the two deep shell presents. Patience to get the ball to the backs in the flat quickly and give them space to work. All this stuff falls on Dak and Kellen Moore.. They need to pull their heads out and do what it takes to possess the ball, control the clock and punch it into the end zone. They need to quit being greedy and impatient.. Moore needs to instill in Dak the importance of not checking out of runs at certain times and Dak needs to be smart enough not to fall for the banana in the tailpipe every time the defense walks guys up to the line of scrimmage and try to show a run defense look on 2nd and 3rd down. They're trying to bait you into a pass call then they're going to drop 7 guys into coverage while the 4 remaining linemen completely disregard the run on the way to taking your head off. This is especially pronounced in the red zone where there is a lot less space to maneuver. Get under center.. run the damn ball off tackle, double at the point of attack and tell any TE who refuses to block that he's not going to play.

Problem solved... You're welcome..

Stop running the ball up the middle 20 times when it is not working. Rather if it is Zeke or Tony...just get more creative.
Pollard out in space is a weapon. Use him.

Once that opens things up in the offense, get a lead, Then pound Zeke time to wear down the defense. Those runs up the middle will then work.

If playing Pollard more means we go back to closer to 50/50 run/pass then I'm all for it. I'm sick and tired of this team throwing it 75% of the time and complaining that the run game is not producing.
It isn’t just cover 2 shell. They are players receivers tight at LOS and not blitzing.

Have to run the ball. running lanes for qb should be wide open with that d. Have to hit TE on the seam. Rcvr need to get open quick on short patterns

Dak seems better in zones. He likes to have rcvrs in space or he starts holding ball and gets indecisive

I agree but to be fair the run blocking is average at best

I'm not sure exactly what WFT was running, but in general, yes you run it when they have both safeties back and then you hit them with the PAP when they are creeping up at the snap. Remember the game Jarwin had running the seam route against the Giants at Met Life when they sat in Cover 2 all day? When you have a good receiver on each side like we do, the safety will shade that way and especially if the CBs are pressing a little. Keep them wide and split the seam right up the middle of the zone.

Seams or verticals down the sidelines hit the weakness of the cover 2 scheme. You have to find the open zones between corner and safety zone and that's where the biggest ones generally are .

The QB-RB running the run read option will do damage. Dak is not a threat to run the ball any longer. LBs and DEs are keying on the RB and not even thinking about the QB.

Dak needs to run the ball more. Just like he did in 2016. If Dak runs a little early on the game, I bet defenses change.

Try five WRs and motion one WR into the backfield. Hit the WR in the flat.

the ball down the deep middle and the under middle is wide open as well

yeah the linebacker is dropping deep to cover that but im sure cd from the slot can do that

then Dalton in the middle is open as well

also not slamming it up the gut a million times......where the motion? where the counters? wheres the misdirection?

why do we keep slamming Elliot up the gut?

The problem is that teams didn't run the Cover 2 back in the leather helmet days. Our OC is out of his element.

Running the ball efficient enough to make them bring a safety down and if not you have to go short passing game. Driving length of field dinking and dunking without penalties or turnovers.

I would also help if the receivers would not drop the ball when it hits them in the hands.

Seems to be fine when Pollard is in the game.

Just a change of pace guy they said..

I am all for pollard over zeke in terms of amount of carries. I also think thAt his ypc is aided by some of the longer runs he’s had but if you watch the cowboys try to run week in and week out both backs struggle the difference is pollard is more capable of breaking a run

Zeke is washed up and is of little use except round goal line and a short yardage and in passing downs if they are worried bout blocking which I’m not certain it’s a problem

Your take is exactly opposite of what Amari Cooper pointing out as being the problem.

The Cowboys move the ball. Stats confirm that.
- Their issue is too many field goals that should be TDs.
- Cooper says the issue with cover-2 is that running the ball and using short passing inevitably leads to having to score from the red zone.
- Cooper believes that the solution is to score more before they get to the red zone.
- That is hard to do when running the ball and with short passes.

Long runs are apart of his game though.

Even his teammates on the sounds of the sideline can see he’s always looking like a step or 2 away from breaking a long TD.

Tony Pollard is a homerun hitter.
