Mr. Emmitt Smith.

Larry Allen a very close second.

Honorable mention.... Troy Aikman.

Emmitt wouldn’t be as good behind this OL plus the NFL is a passing league. Hard to dominate teams on the ground these days. The game has changed some.

When I talk to non-cowboys fans about Emmitt, they say he was a great back but nowhere near Barry Sanders. I will say that a lot of them said that Emmitt had a ton of success because of the line he was running behind & DJ. I was too young to actually watch him.

Then I always follow up asking about Irvin and mostly hear praises about him and how good he was. A lot of non-Cowboys fans have told me that Irvin was the best from that trio. Some have even said that he made Aikman.

Speaking of Aikman, I’ve been told by a lot that he was a good quarterback, had accuracy, but he wasn’t “as great as Cowboys fans think he was“. I remember looking up his stats and was shocked how pedestrian they were.

I love Witten, but I think we’re more versatile and definitely faster with Schultz.
Witten was a great route runner and complete IMO. Our TE's can't block.

Football players can play in any era, just the position may be different. Randy White played bigger than his size. Even the bass at Lake Fork wanted no part of him in his tournament.

I disagree and even former players have admitted they couldn’t play the game today at their size and speed. Randy White played between 260 and 270. That’s way too small for a DT in today’s game. There’s no way to compensate at that size on the DL. He even said that when we reached the mid 1980s it was getting tough for him to play at his size. He said the players were getting bigger and bigger. He was undersized when he came into the league in 1975 which is why the Cowboys tried to make him a linebacker.

Witten was phenomenal, but I just don’t think he would be a better fit than Schultz in our current offense. I don’t recall an instance that shows Schultz being a bad blocker, if I’m honest. I am a huge fan of Schultz. I hope we re-sign him. Dude has potential to be an elite tight end in this league.

Aikman was a leader and could throw the ball on a rope. He made the team around him better. Ask him to put it up 35 times a game, he could be in the conversation of greatest ever. He played in a different era with different rules and crap coaching the second half of his career.

I have 4 first tiers

Defense - Demarcus Ware or Darren Woodson

Offense - Larry Allen or Emmitt Smith.

Fans will say that about Emmitt because they are stupid

Emmitt V. Sanders is a good debate. Youtube highlights have made some who weren't around then think Sanders was the goat. He is up there, but he is not. One of the worst big game HB's in the game. He completely disappeared in the playoffs.

Makes sense. That’s why I find it crazy when people say a quarterback has to have certain pieces around him to be successful, but mean it in a negative way.

What I took away from it all was that Emmitt and Aikman fell into the perfect positions while Irvin could’ve done it anywhere.

I'm trying to avoid the endless Dak debates, though I might just be fooling myself. So, you can't pick Staubach, Aikman or any other Cowboys quarterback. Aside from that, which past Cowboy player and his position would you team with this offense or defense.

Me? It's a tie between Charles Haley, Erik Williams, Larry Allen and Emmitt Smith.

I gotta go Emmitt Smith. His durability, reliability and productivity at the running back position would make us a better balanced team and even more dangerous offensively. I'm okay with the pass rush, and although I'd take an upgrade on the offensive line, I think we can get by with the line we have, provided Tyron Smith returns.
However, the lack of a running game concerns me. And I believe we'll have to lean more on that in the playoffs.

But that's my take. What's yours?
Emmitt was my selection as well...

I agree with many here that a DT would be our best bet. I think Russell Maryland would fit today's DT size and build.

Not as great as Bob Lilly or Randy White, but would fit our defense better today.
