Ideas on how to run the ball

Fact, the Cowboys run game has been declining to an abysmal showing yesterday for just 12 rushes. Neither RB looked good and those two PB OL looked very mediocre. The others looked worse.

This is not about my ideas on how to improve this but you X's and O's guys because I have no football coaching experience.

Without the run game, they are done in the playoffs. Even pass teams need a semblance of a run game in the playoffs.

I do not know if this is even fixable. Neither the OL or RB's look good when they do want to stick with the run. It just looks broken and even AZ missing four starters on their defense knew that.

Rex Ryan stated the obvious "they were good when they were running the ball, they've got to get back to running the ball". But the ex coach didn't offer any suggestions on how to go about doing that.

I have doubts this can be fixed with this roster but I do not know for sure. They did run the ball better earlier in the season with these same OL and RB's and the same OC.

Is this fixable now or do they have to wait until the off season?

Trade for Craig Reynolds (who?) of the Lions. He rushed for 112 yards on the Cardinals.

I don't see any fixes coming at this point of the season. Cowboys need to take a long look at their linemen and the people coaching them, this offseason.

Make the defense defend the back half of the field :muttley:

There is lots to help it, play action, off-tackle runs, sweeps, slants, fullback, two TE’s, etc. Running up the gut 12 times a game is not even trying.

...hard words to go by, CC. Nonetheless, they bare some truth in weight. We have seen this team go as running game goes, makes logical sense. D focus on run, opens pass game.

My gut feeling on this, is lack of talent and physical persona on OL. The guys in right now, are Jags. With exception of Smith and Martin, even Smith is regressing quick.

They have 2 wks to fix this. Likely? Probably not. Hate to say it, we might be one and done. Though, MM has always struck me as this coach, who can wheel and deal at impromptu time.

Lets see how it pans out.

..good post, CC. ;)..

I thought you were going to give some ideas
Well, I could but then I would lose whatever respect I have here now. And I am barely hanging onto that as it is.

I try to be upfront, there are a lot of members here with a lot more X's and O's knowledge than I will ever have. I tend to lean to the human side of the game.

There's this "they've got to get back to running the ball" phrase repeated over and over by every analyst but never any concrete ideas to do that. Do we think McC, Moore, Prescott, the OL and RBs and the defense don't want them to do that? I don't think the coaching staff got to the Star today and all looked at each other and exclaimed "hey, we've got to get back to running the ball"!!!

They're playing the #1 run team in the league Saturday night, maybe they can give them some ideas?

Don't leave Dalton Schultz to block anyone one on one.

Yeah, lets blame the guy having a career year and probably going to be a pro bowl alternate. Why not? We've blamed everyone else for the loss.

Especially not pro bowl DEs like Chandler Jones. I mean damn.. We know Schultz stinks as a blocker but we have probably called 200 running plays asking him to block a DE this year. I would wager he has succeeded on less than 20 of those. Dude can't block.. so quit asking him to. The other part of the problem is that we can't run wide.. because our wide receivers can't block either. Other than Noah Brown they're all C minus at best at blocking. It's the main reason we have so few coast to coast runs.. Our receivers see blocking as an inconvenience and do the bare minimum.. They don't take pride in it the way Dez and TWill did.. and it shows..

just line up and do it thats how. Stick with it, actually design a gameplan around it, practice it..that's not happening. Pass happy Moore and i think dak likes it!

No one blames him for the loss.. But it's certainly fair to blame him for the 5 or 6 running plays that got blown up in the backfield because he missed his block.. Not that we need blocking or anything to run the ball, right?

This is the part that scares me.. Dak, like most QBs, never saw a situation where he thought a pass would not be better than a run. Someone needs to get in his ear and tell him to quit audibling out of runs just because there's a stacked box. If they stack one side then audible to the other side. If they pinch inside then audible to a pitch.. Throwing the ball is not the solution to every problem .. but that's how we are playing football the last two months.
