If we win the coin toss, should we defer or take the first possesion?

What do you think should be the plan here for the wildcard. I’m usually a defer but I think getting an early lead would really do wonders for the Boys. We want to try to get the 9ers to become a passing team.

Conventional wisdom is to defer, but we need points early so I think it’s better that we receive first.

I’m not worried. We usually lose the coin toss and start with the ball anyway.

100% defer.

The defense is our more physical group, offense is a bit more finesse. Let the defense come out, force them to get a stop and that will allow the offense to not feel pressure on opening drive jitters and give the benefit of the ball in second half...

Our offense is absolute garbage at the beginning.

You give them the ball, let our defense do it’s thing, then go score.

I’m sorry but you’ll never convince me that getting the ball after halftime whether you are winning or losing isn’t a huge advantage.

Also, you risk getting scored on before and after halftime and that might as well be a turnover if you get back to back possessions.

It doesn’t matter. I would love for the defense to crush San Fran. I also want Dallas to establish their authority on offense. I want the D line to be suffocating. It is hard to throw when you can’t stand up. Wolfhunter and The Lion have to be on point against the run.

I want Dallas to score 1st and maintain a lead. This really makes opposing teams one dimensional which is very important and win a playoff game.

Keys to winning:
1) score more points than your opponent.

Go Dallas!!!

Yeah but what if we don’t score early which is usually the case…

It’s not worth it.

One area I have disagreed with McCarthy. I think you defer since you can't win a gam on the 1st series of the game. However by deferring you have a chance to cut the lead if trailing after halftime or you have the chance to extend the lead if winning at halftime. I think the start of the 2nd half can go a long way in determining the outcome of the game. Just my 2 cents

I always want the ball to start the second half, but I can see arguments for both choices. That's just my preference.
Mine too
I get both ways of thinking
It’s a big confidence booster if you get the ball first and March down and get 7
I love getting the ball first after you’ve seen what the other team is doing and can adjust to it, plus it opens up the chance to double up
In the great scheme of things neither option does much for you if you don’t go down and score though

I see both sides of the coin. Our offense can start very slow at times, especially against good teams. Let's say we put our defense out there and they get it rammed down their throats to give up 7. Offense gets the ball back and starts slow and goes 3 and out. SF now gets the ball back up 7 and we could be in hot water very quickly. I believe this is exactly how the Detroit playoff game went.

Maybe we need to get 2 of the first 3 possessions to weather any type of storm.

I am not confident in this defense.

On this we agree 100 percent. I hated Garrett for that. The amount of times won the toss and kept the ball was crazy.

You should be confident in the defense. It’s as good as anyone’s in the league currently.

We’ve spent a ton on offense. Those guys are the ones I’m worried about.

If you haven’t learned by now that our defense turns into a playmaking frenzy once’s opponents get pass happy when we have a lead then I don’t know what to tell you.

I don't really care. But prefer to have the ball in the 2nd half to start. But if not, that is fine.

However, if we win the toss and elect to receive, I do expect a complete meltdown in the game thread for the 1st 5 pages.
Even if SF wins the toss and defers, so we are on offense 1st, many will still have a meltdown about it and blame MM and even blame Jerry.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s thumb on his throwing hand is banged up, and you can clearly see it’s been an issue for him since it happened. This a run-first team to begin with, but add the injury to Garoppolo’s thumb into the mix and you have a team that is heavily leaning on their running game. They have a solid offensive line upfront led by left tackle Trent Williams who has been playing at an All Pro level, although his availability because of injury is in question. They have a tough running back who has shown burst and big play ability in Elijah Mitchell coupled with the way they use Deebo Samuel to put defenses in a bind. This Cowboys team is going to have to come prepared to tackle and hit for 60 minutes. The 49ers look to wear down their opponents, it’s their key to victory, and for the Cowboys, stopping that is the key to theirs.

The stats basically say there is no advantage or disadvantage but I prefer deferring.

I just think in this game, if you can snuff San Fran's O out on that first drive, it really puts pressure on Jimmy G, especially if our offense can then get points on their first drive.
