If it was a 'future first', that means no Ceedee Lamb. That's a far bigger price to pay than Hill.
Definitely.

But the fact that compensation was agreed upon when it would have been at its highest tells me they will work it out after the inevitable disaster that's in front of us.

I also doubt they would have dealt two firsts in a row.

I'm thinking the compensation was a future second.

Hey maybe the timing works out for us for a change.

The upcoming year is going to be a big time challenge for a few reasons.

Absolutely.

If this rumor hangs over McCarthy and the team all season, 2022 is going to be a mess.
  1. Over the cap with restructures, trades, and cuts a must
  2. A bunch of free agents that we can't afford to keep
  3. Our defensive coordinator likely to leave for a head coaching job
  4. Our offensive coordinator who struggled down the stretch apparently staying (make of that what you will)
  5. Potentially a lame duck coach keeping the seat warm until the guy they actually want decides to take the job
Add it all up and it's not looking too good at this point.

Unless they have changed it, it is 2 1sts for a HC. I think they standardized it because if a HC is already in agreement, makes it easier to accomplish. No team is going pull a surprise trade on a HC like they would a player, DEN and Von Miller come to mind.

Throw in that first place schedule my friend.

Also no one goes two straight years undefeated in their division.

We are staring at a 7 win season, and I would do all I could on a two year plan to get in better cap shape for Paytons arrival.

I understand the records and whatever, but Payton is probably the one guy who could both tolerate Jerry and his antics and also command serious respect in the locker room.

Parcells is considered a God and is a missed FG away from only having one SB. Payton had his second stolen by the refs in the worst call in history.

It's not all about that anyway. It's about the present moment, and Payton beats the living crap out of MM as a leader of an organization.

Price just dropped precipitously….
Now NO can take a mid round draft pick or get nothing and we will wait a year
Lololol. Wait a year and do what? You still have to pay next year. And the year after that. And the year after that. Want to wait 3 more years?

I think the Payton to Cowboys will happen this year. They will allow the Saints to hire a new coaching staff, let things settle down, let coaching moves happen, decide on compensation and then in February BAM!!!

Payton feels like coaching again

I agree with you there. I think we should just 'take our lumps' in 2022 and get our cap situation in order as best we can. Cut or trade the bad contracts and look ahead to 2023, regardless of whether or not we get Payton then.

But I do not expect the organization to do that. Instead they choose to believe that they are always 'this close' or 'one missing piece away'. The fact is that they had their best opportunity in 2021 and still came up woefully short. It's time to stop kidding themselves and make the tough decisions for once.

It certainly throws a wrench into the 2022 season if, in fact, there is any truth to the team being interested now.

McCarthy is effectively a lame duck coach keeping the seat warm for Payton in 2023.

"That's not gonna be good for anybody."
I agree it is unprofessional way if you ask me unless they already have told MM he is leaving or maybe promised him another job in the organization

And now he acts like he has no patience with MM.

And hypocritical fans do too. Some of the same people I've seen making excuses for Garrett for a decade suddenly have 'no patience' with McCarthy. Say what you want about him, but McCarthy has actually WON THINGS in his career.

I don't see that happening. If anything, McCarthy will just go into a shell and realize that he's getting paid for three more years no matter what else happens. Given the guaranteed salaries for coaches, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to find guys that are just going for that 'golden parachute' retirement contract and don't much care how things turn out. And why would they? They get theirs either way.

You're not alone in that belief. I have some friends who are convinced that Payton will coach the Cowboys THIS YEAR.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Bucs will send a 2019 sixth-round pick to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for Arians and a 2019 seventh-round pick.

Not sure where Florio is getting his figures on what NFL head coaches are making but Bill Belichick is the highest paid head coach at $12.5 million per season according to this article. No way is Jerry going to pay Sean Payton $30 to $40 million per season. Payton made $9.8 million last season. According to Google Mike McCarthy makes $4 million per season.

I think he is THAT mad at McCarthy at this point.

He sold his postseason experience as a huge part of being here in the first place, never stops reminding us....but then says the team was nervous when the time came. What??

Just....either way.....I don’t care whose record is what in the past because you can't take past wins and make them count now.

But if I have to choose between McCarthy an Payton to be my HC moving ahead....its not even close.

Brees never had to run Payton out of town because he didn't think he could get it done.

The Bucs sent two first round picks, two second round picks and $8 milllion to the Raiders for Jon Gruden.
