Dat Nguyen retired from the Cowboys in 2006, at least as a player. He was an assistant linebacker coach until 2010 when he left the Cowboys and the NFL for the final time. He had a brief stint as a linebacker coach at Texas A&M that ended in 2010. He went on to co-host a sports talk radio show on ESPN San Antonio but that was also short-lived. In 2016, Nguyen bought a Chick Fil-A in Fort Worth, Texas. He operates his restaurant like a football team as Nguyen states, “I am the coach. We have coordinators and we have players. It’s no different than football. Everyone has a position they are responsible for.” Nguyen prefers the stability that being a business owner provides over coaching. It gives him time to spend with his family—wife, 3 daughters, and twin boys. Nguyen also has investments in real estate and insurance. Nguyen’s net worth is about $7 million, though that varies according to the site, but it is fair to say he has earned every bit of it through hard work.

I don't know if its still there, because I haven't been there in about 5 years, but there used to be a billboard in Rockport, honoring him as being from there. He wasn't born in Rockport, but spent most of his growing up years there.

I'm almost positive you have to work in the Chik-fil-A for some time period to become an owner, so that would have been a hoot to drive up to the window and have Dat take your order lol

I did not know this was a requirement. That would definitely be wild.

From what I've read, being a Chic Fil A franchisee sucks. You can't own the real estate, can't sell your franchise. You basically have a nice paying job, and that's it.

I'm worth close to that as a retired educator.....and I haven't worked in 5 years... thought he would be doing a bit better. Nonetheless, good for him for taking care of his family and living a good life. SALUD!

I’m not sure how accurate these net worth sites are. I’d be willing to bet he is worth a little more than that but he seems happy regardless.

You have to tip your hat off to Dat. The league is littered with terrible stories like...there is just too many players to name, but all you have to do is google these phrases. "NFL players who went broke" and "NFL player who were incarcerated".

For those who like stats.

The US incarceration rate for the general public is 0.63%. For NFL players it is 7%.

The US bankruptcy rate for the general public is 0.17%. For the NFL is 78%.

We should applaud and celebrate those who are able to transform a life changing opportunity in the NFL into something good for them and their families.

After all is this not the American dream?

So, three out of four NFL players file for bankruptcy? That seems too high....
