Why would Sean Payton want to come here?

I know the Jones boys are banking on Payton coming here, but after seeing how the FO just completely dismantled a competitive team for NO reason and essentially turning McCarthy into a lame duck coach, why would Sean Payton want to come here and be part of an FO that has no idea what it is doing? We may even lose out on Dan Quinn who see how McCarthy got done and will decide to coach elsewhere.

Maybe Sean has some odd scapegoat fetish.

12 and 5 with a team that barely lost to the Rams. Instead of building on it, we let 5+ starters walk and replaced them with bargain bin players. I'd love to know how we got better.

if he wants to earn one last large paycheck, ala Parcells. MM is here for at least another year, if its an average to good year, then he sticks around. if its a bad year, he is let go and Jones has to make a splash signing and its payton, with a large contract. results won't change

I will be shocked if Sean Payton ever agrees to come to the Big Top Jones circus in Big D. He would either have guarantees similar to what Jimmy had or hell has frozen over. There is no way he comes here under this consistently insane structure we have here.

Put even more succinctly: No big changes at the top- no big time head coach. Period.

Sean Payton would never want to come here. Nor would any other quality coach. This franchise is the opposite of everything a promising coach is looking for.

A potentially great coach would want the freedom to build the team he wants.

He would want to hire his own coaching staff and personnel department. He would want to run the draft and select players that were compatible with his specific system.

An innovative young coach would want the authority to make decisions regarding the salary cap and retaining his talent as well as acquiring veteran talent that fits into his system and the cap. He would want to be the decision maker in regards to the information given to the media.

Absolutely none of that would ever be available as Head Coach for the Dallas Cowboys.

if McCarthy jets, I think we get another Jerry drinking buddy. Maybe Jason Garrett makes a return to Dallas.

I can't see a Payton or Harbaugh wanting to be here.

First of all, you don't know the Jones boys are banking on SP.

I'm yet to hear why he will even be available next season. He signed a contract and it hasn't been fulfilled, nor will it be by next off season. Have the Saints released his rights?

Secondly, as much as I'm irritated with this FO they didn't dismantle the team. They cut over paid, under producing players. While I don't agree with the lack of compensation or logic behind it all, the moves in a vacuum were not terrible.

IF and it's a big IF, SP was considering Dallas, and available, this off season hasn't hurt our chances of landing him.

In fact, giving the new coach a healthy cap and several key players locked up is actually great bait.

maybe they are dismantling the team to get it ready for him. I think they want to give him a clean slate to work with. Coaches going to a new team would enjoy having a big cap and be able to build their own team from scratch.
As far as why the Cowboys-he coached here before, knows Jerry, and knows how much more publicity there is here. Same reason Parcells gave.

We've built up a huge cap and arent touching it. Jerry could sign Wagner and still have 20m left over but wont. That just not Jerry. Hes up to something. At least for now Payton is the only thing thats making any sense. Not saying I'm for or against it just saying it makes sense

Have you people not quite yet gotten that it's all about money?

A Gruden type deal gets Payton here when Jerry has nothing left to sell.

Payton has already worked in this organization and knows first hand what Jerry is all about. Some here say that Parcels quit on Jerry and quit on the franchise. I think he grew tired of Jerry and his meddling ways and walked away. Payton was there and knows what Parcels went through, and Jerry is even worse now. Why would anyone want to go through that again?

There's not a chance in hell Payton is considering coming back to Jerry's circus. Why would he? No amount of money is enough to make Jerry tolerable.
He would - if the Jones Family grants him a percentage of the franchise ownership if he coaches the team to a couple of Super Bowl titles. (1-2% ....that's what I would angle for if I were Payton. )

In any other case I'd agree with you....but SP and Jerry are actually friends.

It may be somewhat fake on Paytons end, but there's a reason for that. Gruden type money is probably part of it.

When Jerry quits, Payton is going to be the HC here.

He is the frontrunner anyway.

I don't know that the Jones boys are banking on it. Not saying they wouldn't like him to, but I assume they realize there are obstacles.

As for completely dismantling the team, I think that's a bit overboard, but granted they haven't improved it, and at least for now it appears to be a lesser team than last season.

As for Quinn, of course he would leave if he got the right head coaching opportunity. That would be the case if he was the D-Coordinator with any other team.

The obstacles are really going to be 2 things. First, does Payton even want to keep coaching. He obviously doesn't have to for the money. And second, would he be willing to work for an owner/GM like Jerry that would be unwilling to give him the kind of control a head coach needs. At this point in Payton's career I doubt it.
