Draft debate: Is Jordan Davis a two or three down player in the NFL

I dont think he will be the pick regardless but, what if his presence gives you one of the top run defenses in the league? It has been an issue with this team for years, and a big reason they went home early last post season.
 
I watched a few Georgia games and I think Davis was off the field more than I would have expected for an impact player. I can't say if he is lazy or if he tires easily but it did surprise me how many times he came out of the game.

College coaches pump up their players when questioned about their draft prospects.

There was an interview with Trysten Hill's college D-Coordinator immediately after that draft.
- The D-Coordinator made Hill sound like the next Aaron Donald.
 
Planet Theory alone pretty much demands a top 20 pick for Davis now. The only other DT this decade who's really been in his league of H/W/S is Dontari Poe, and Poe was a beast before his back gave out.

I think Davis is a 2-down player, but if he plays like the guard-eating behemoth his measurables project as, you can justify a 1st round pick for ~40 plays a game. Most DLs rotate pretty heavily and don't get a ton more than that anyway.

Based on what? There’s literally zero stats out there that back this claim and most scouting reports have his pass rush listed as a weakness.

I don’t even care about sacks…theres literally nothing indicating he had a positive amount of pressures, pass rushers win rate, etc…zero.

Looking at these stats, I would say this guy sucked for the Cowboys. No tackles. No sacks. A few interceptions, but nothing compared to say what Diggs has done this year.

I am just saying that judging JDavis by his stats, is like using these stats here to judge Deion Sanders time with the Cowboys. They might not look good, but he really was a difference maker.

Its 2022…stats and metrics have come a long way so they can help a ton in the evaluation.

Even f if you discredit that, most scouting reports are knocking the kid for not providing any pass rush.

Vince Wilfork had 16 career sacks.

My concerns w/ Davis is that he appears to be a part time player. However, he is a consistent pocket pusher which is how NT's provide pass rush.

OK, let's evaluate. First team all american and first team all sec. He is completely immoveable, and yet possesses exciting athleticism for his size, being a surprisingly nimble lateral mover who covers ground well. Good instincts. Black hole if RB's get anywhere near him. Powerful hands. Shreds blocks impressively.

Exactly what is it about him that you don't like?
 
People are saying on this thread that Jordan Davis can push the pocket as a pass rusher, like many NTs do. I don't actually remember him doing this much in the games I watched him. I focused on him in the Alabama and Clemson games from this year, and I didn't see him doing that. He doesn't get a lot of leverage, run or pass, and he isn't that explosive, run or pass. He is one of the weirdest athletes I have ever seen. He is kind of the Leonard Davis of DTs. He absorbs contact extremely well, and throws guys off him with his hands, but I don't see him do that much else. The only time the testing numbers are apparent on the field is in long pursuit: he had one play against Tennessee, I think, where the quarterback broke the pocket and he chased him down on the outside. I've never seen a 340 pound guy do that before. I don't think his athleticism is going to lead to sacks, he just doesn't seem that explosive. He did have more sacks in college than his linemate, Devonte Wyatt, though.
 
this is funny, Dallas doesn't value a 1tech DT? Neither do the fans. lol I have yet to see any publication or view not listing him as the best 1 or 2 DT in the draft.

Vince Wilfork also played in an era where stats, metric and analytics were practically non existent outside of sacks. I highly doubt his scouting report coming out knocked his pass rush ability.

I like Davis. I think he’d be an exceptional 1T run clogger for us that’d be a clear cut upgrade over Bohanna. That being said, he has endurance issues and while he’s immovable he’s shown nothing at the college level to indicate he’s going to give you pass rush juice. The tape agrees, the lack of any positive pass rush stats agree and the scouting reports agree.

Again, I really like him and what he could do for our run D. But you draft that kind of profile in the midrounds not the 1st round.

Fans in general don't understand the 1 tech position and what it does for a D. It's one of the primary reasons we keep losing in the playoffs, because we don't have a real one.

Leon Lett did not rack up a lot of sacks either.

But he was a disruptor that allowed others to get sacks.
 
Year 1 I would just see his upside as a 2 down NT that beats up the guards/center all game allowing the "nickel" DTs to feast on 3rd down.
Some teams will see his combine and believe they can get him to become a 3 down NT that provides both a huge clog in the run game but also can push the pocket forcing the QB into the edge rushers. Effective, but not something stats would show.

Guys his size and athletic ability are few and far between. Add in he's relatively new to the sport(late HS) and while UGA is a top CFB program with great S&C staff I think the right NFL team could take him to the next level endurance wise-if he's willing.
