Are we sure Ferguson can’t be a star?

Liked your post but he was not the Goat tight end. I think you have to bring up
Gonzalez, Antonio Gates, Gronk & Kelce even Shannon Sharp. He is at the big boy table for sure but not the GOAT.
Witten was the g o at. He was better at blocking than gates, and Gonzales. He was just as good a receiver. Apso, I’ve been a cowboys fan for over 3 decades. I watched witten s whole career. Those guys were the number one targets and didn’t have to block as much. I remember 2005 and 2006 when the line was awful and witten stayed in to lock more. It was t until tomorrow got going and could extend plays that witten really stated getting the targets. His numbers would be way better if he blocked less. I do t mean run blocking. He stayed in to block on passing plays a lot .

I think the Cowboys were clearly intent on taking a TE in the draft. I consistently keep hearing they were interested in McBride and Kolar both of whom were taken right before there picks in the 2nd and 4th rounds.

I think the Cowboys like Schultz but see him as replaceable. He’s a good TE that doesn’t really bring anything dynamic to the table ala Kelce, Kittle, etc. IMO, they’ll let Schultz play out this season under the franchise rage with the expectation Ferguson takes over that role in 2023.
Ferguson can be a great red one target with those hands.

Are we sure ferguson can’t be a star? They say he’s not quick but has the best hands? How do we know he can’t be the Fitzgerald or m Irvin of tight ends? They weren’t fast.

I havent seen anyone say he cant be good.

Witten early on in his career was not slow, his 40 time was 4.65 at the combines. For TE that is pretty good. No doubt over 17 years in the league he slowed down.
Witten had average speed but had quickness. I remember him catching a deep pass on prime Al Harris in 2004.

Thats not the same as people saying he cant be a great player.
If the scouts give him a grade that translates to career back up, they’re saying he’s going t. Be a career back up on top of saying he’s not quick and can’t separate.

That’s why we can disagree.

No one in here but scouts and analysts talk about his inability to separate.

And that's true. Most view him as a career backup. I see that but I also think there's something about him that makes him an overachiever and I think that continues in the NFL. I think he has a better pro career than his talent indicates.

Time will yell, those who think they know...really don't.. I'm not sure anyone expected Dalton to be one

It seems he has the work ethic and pedigree to do really well. If he can stay focused and become a master of his craft, I think he will do really well. Excited about this player.

They are just saying that is his projection. Not that its not possible for him to be great.

Splitting hairs, but just sayin.

We're gonna be watching McKeon and Sprinkle. Lmao

It took Jarwin and Schultz 2 years before they ever played a snap.

That's how it goes when ya don't invest any draft capitol or resources into the position.

We coulda won some Superbowls if we woulda had 2 good tes. As much as we use 2 tes ya'd think we'd have a great te core.

Our te core that plays 140% + of the snaps has avged 4-6 tes a year for over a decade. Lol

We ain't gonna win playoff games and Superbowls with trash stats like that.

Gates and Gonzalez was drawing Double and Triple teams down the field in coverage so they didn't have to do all that blocking. Lol.

Witten just barely drew man to man coverage much less double or triple coverage .

That's why blocking is overrated for some tes and not others. Having a potent receiving threat te opens more up for the RB than stacking the line w tes.

Witten was a great te. But the Hof doesn't reconized the coverage they draw.

I hope he’s great.

Always remember that we as fans automatically overrate our own talent. Nothing wrong with that. That’s what fan(antics) do. Our hope and strong desire to see our team improve gives us all very big and hopeful eyes.

I hope Jake Ferguson becomes a great player. He certainly could. But it is highly unlikely that a 4th round rookie is great right out of the cereal box. This isn’t Big 10 competition. I expect Ferguson to play quite a bit, play well at times and make a few rookie mistakes, but also learn a lot. Maybe in year 2 we see a big leap.

Jerry told Ferguson that he needed to play immediately

That just goes to show ya how much he thinks of our #2 starting Tes.

Were 1 checkdown te injury away from having a run n shoot offense. Js

Hes gonna get to play by sure default.

Rico, Swaim, Escobar, Hanna, got the same hype lmao.
