How did you get roped into becoming a Cowboys fan?

Two words: Tony Dorsett.
I was a huge Tony Dorsett and Washington R******s fan. I hated the Cowboys, particularly Roger Staubach.
And then ... the Dallas freaking Cowboys drafted Tony Dorsett.
And instantaneously, I became a Dallas Cowboys fan and never looked back.
I don't have the abiding disdain and hatred for the Washington team because I was a former fan. I even rooted for them in their Super Bowl against the Dolphins when Riggo ran roughshod over them.
Of course, however, when we play them I want the Cowboys to beat the brakes off them.

I’ve never heard of a Washington fan or any fan from a rival NFC East team jumping ship and becoming a Cowboys fan. That’s a new one! Lol I couldn’t imagine jumping ship and becoming a Washington fan. How long did you follow Washington before making the switch?

I did not get roped into it ..... I gladly became a fan as a young boy watching Roger Staubach and Tony Dorsett.
I suffered through the exciting but ultimately disappointing seasons of Danny White. Was overjoyed when I came back from overseas to the triplets dominance and since then have been hating Jerry Jones a little more each day.
But I will never not be a Cowboy fan.

Sounds pretty much like my journey.
Except I would not use the word hate for Jerry.
I don't dislike the man, just the amateur job he is doing as GM.

Since my youth. I was raised in Washington D.C. and the Maryland suburbs. Consider my conversion a miracle. :)

Let's say you are a young enough Cowboys fan to where you weren't even old enough to remember the last Cowboys Super Bowl championship back in January 1996.

How in the hell did you get roped into becoming a Cowboys fan? Was it the Joneses and their wit and savvy?

Just curious.

I grew up on a military base in England. The Cowboys played the Bears in a preseason game in '86 out in London. Got to meet some players as a young lad and been a fan since then. I remember having to wait until Tuesday morning to grab the Stars and Stripes newspaper to get the scores for the Sunday games - '88 and '89 season was very disappointing to see those box scores lol. 30 minute game "rebroadcasts" used to be shown on Channel 4 a week after original broadcast so I got to see some games. Plus my parent would occasionally let me stay up late to watch Cowboys games when they were shown on the Armed Forces Network (AFN).

That’s an amazing transformation going from a Washington fan to a Cowboys fan. Did you ever consider crossing back over when Washington beat the Cowboys in the 1982 NFC title game and went onto win the Super Bowl? I’m surprised you remained a Cowboys fan after Washington won another SB in 87 and what went down with the Cowboys in the late 80s.

I was born in Rhode Island and fortunately my family moved to Texas when I was only a few months old or I would’ve probably become a New York Jets fan because of Joe Namath and his guarantee. I have some cousins who became Jets fans because of that. I actually had one of my cousins who was so desperate to break away from the strangle hold the Jets have over him he went to a hypnotist but it didn’t work.

A hypnotist, you say? I might have to give that a shot. :muttley:

1960 from the very beginning of the team. I was age 12 and already an NFL fan. Players like Unitas, Hornung, Jim Brown and other stars were active back then. Watched the Cowboys grow slowly the first few years but year over year they just kept getting better. They drafted and signed local heroes like Lilly and Meredith which added to their popularity. They rapidly went from the worst team to being a strong contender in a span of around 5 years. They had a great 30 plus year run that lasted through the Jimmy Johnson team. Then the last 25 plus years have been rough.

The first Super Bowl vs the Baltimore Colts. Step Father was a rabid Colts fan living in Texas. When the Colts played Dallas in the SB of course it was an all out party at our house with most going for the Cowboys and as a young boy I went with the majority at my house on that day. Well we lost on that fg at the end but I have been a fan ever since that day. This is the first Cowboy game I remember watching because Step Father hated the Cowboys we did not watch them otherwise. But he was forced to whenever the Colts played them. That's not exactly roped in but I could have become a Colts fan...naw! J/K

What’s been going on with the Cowboys the last 27 years probably has some fans seeing a shrink. There’s definitely a few that need some professional help.

I was not roped in…lol. I enjoy being a fan of this team. I remember the 90s SBs well. Time for another SB.

For me it was pretty simple, I was born in Dallas.

But as a Millennial, I've never seen them even advance beyond the divisional round.
