Reason why they had Smith over the Green/Zion

Not sure why it's even a topic since Green and Zion were both off the board, and no one was pounding the table to trade up for either.

Personally I think they had a second round grade on their first round pick and Jerry didn't like that look.

It would have been justified on its own by picking 24th in a draft where they gave out 14-16 first round grades.

Good point about how Martin spoiled us. But I'd argue Fred did the same. I knew he was going to be great out of the box given Brian Water's comments about how Fred was teaching him the offense. A rookie teaching a vet. Wow.
Yosemite was the smartest player in his draft.

If all 3 reach their absolute peak, based on their physical ability:
Zion: Rodney Hudson
Green: Ron Leary
T. Smith: Prime Years Tyron Smith

Tyler and Tyron have different body types. At similar ages Tyler was 25 lbs heavier. He is still 10 lbs heavier. It's their bubbles where Tyron has always been lean.

I see Tyler growing into a body more like Flozell's 6'7" 340 lbs.

Yes, by their own ratings they reached for Smith. They know they did. Which is why they've been on an explanation tour this month.

Yeah, and considering all, it's fine.

The weak cover attempt is what bugged me way more than the pick itself.

If Smith doesn't flat out bust, he should be pretty good. It was worth the risk IMO.

The argument in the long run will be about what Linderbaum ends up becoming, but I knew all along they wouldn't give him a 1st round grade due to size and being center only.

The one thing I'm having trouble buying is if they would have left Green and Zion on the board if all three were there. I still somehow doubt that, but quite moot.

Yes, it's not a body type comparison per se; although it is for Zion/Hudson.

Just an upside comparison.

My gut feel comp is a 6-6 version of Larry Allen.

Tyron ended up near 320 and maintained the flat stomach and body that would make a Greek God jealous. Tyron could star as the terminator if they make another one of those. Arnold was 6-2 and less than 240 at that point. He would look puny next to Tyron Smith.

Tyler does have the near flat stomach look at 324 pounds, but is not quite in that Greek God category.

Tyler's demeanor is somewhere between LA and Erik Williams.

Not quite the level of EW wanting to kill defenders and eat their children but he definitely wants to physically dominate them.

LA was a bully because it was fun but he didn't have the EW or Randy White type mean streak.

Flozell is a reasonable comp. He had terrific physical ability. Would be remembered as a Cowboys Great if not for the false starts. I don't think Tyler has quite as big of frame as Flozell. Only a few great OTs have been that big. Jason Peters has a very wide body but is 6-4. I think Boselli was under 330.

Body type I see Erik Williams but with foot quickness close to Tyron. I still remember seeing Erik Williams in training camp in 92. I said then that he was destined for greatness.

I've had a handful of those predictions after attending training camps over the years.
LA, Witten, etc..

My 1 miss was MartyB. He looked incredible on TC during the practice reps.
He would go from the blocking drills of dominating DEs to the receivers drill where DBs struggled to cover him. They had a drill where a Safety & CB covered 1 receiver. He won most of those.
Regardless, he still walked back after the play looking like the laziest person in human history.
Then in real games he could not remember where to line up and had issues concentrating long enough to catch the ball.
He was a good blocker in real games for the Cowboys but could have been much more.
That was the Wade with Garrett as OC era.
MartyB with Jimmy as HC would either have been cut as a rookie or would have been an all time great.

The Joneses pick for physical ceiling and position, likely Jerry and Stephen, respectively.

We should all be discussing Jermaine Johnson's upcoming rookie season with the Cowboys but let's just hope Tyler Smith becomes the beast they think he will become.
It's easy not to rue passing up on J.J. Watt when you get Tyron Smith.
I'd rather have Smith and Sam Williams than Johnson and whoever. Williams has more upside than Johnson and has the advantage of working with Dan Quinn.

I don't need to watch a McDonald's commercial to know I don't like the menu.

That's for people like you, Ronald.
If you like the Cowboys you should watch. Hall is outstanding at what he does.

That was why they had him ranked over the other two because it was team need specific. What's the worst that can happen? He doesn't work out at OT, he's still a very good OG candidate.

They picked Williams when he was an OT in the Big 12 with the idea of changing him to OG and it never really took. Hell, Smith was more powerful than Williams was as a pro at Tulsa last year.

Also, I don't think a lot of us recall the growing pains the other Smith had as a 20 year old when they drafted him in the 1st.

The whole OL thing gets skewed a little when we get a guy like Zack Martin showing up so ready to play. It's one thing that a rookie OL makes All Pro, it's something else when that hasn't happened since 1947. Sometimes, I take for granted just what an incredible player he is. But then again, he wasn't trying to name the OL the "Lard Butt Boyz".
That has been the problem with Dallas fans OG are compared to Zack. Every player at LG has had a lot of detractors, Collins too many penalties, Leary getting beat by quickness, Williams being beat by strength, McGovern looked rather uneven. Until someone comes a long and unseats Martin and Tyron as the mainstays on the line RT, LG, OC will be get the best you can until you can draft a better or adequate replacement. I do not have a problem with that, having a ton of money sunk into the OL hamstrings other positional groups. For a while Dallas had huge contracts for RG, OC, and LT

You know I’ve been hard on Biaz, but haven’t closed the door on him yet, give him another yr to see if he gets better before replacing him.

personally I think it was a solid season for his first real season as the starting center. But certainly not good enough to stop looking for a better one.

I have a good feeling about Smith. I think he's going to turn a negative into a positive this season at guard and the Cowboys have addressed their future at left tackle. I think he's going to be a mean Erik Williams/Kevin Gogan type. He doesn't shy away from violent impacts.

love his nastiness.
he'll need to learn to control it.
but the physicality to his game is much needed on our line.

They should consider not leaking the draft board next time. May save them some trouble
