Exactly, and the only way to know for sure it won't work is to try it out.

On passing downs, yeah I think Golston is very capable of playing the DT spot and was worked during senior bowl as a DT. I don't expect him to be an every down DT but in situation I think he could handle it

I'm not saying it is the same. Quinn has a better ideal of his system than you or anyone at this sight. In the end he may not do it but he will take this time during OTA and possibly training camp to give Golston work at DT. You guys dismiss this out of hand, I think Quinn has a better ideal than any of us, he works with these guys and knows his guys.

He was good at it at the senior bowl. I'm thinking they might kick him inside on pass rush downs and keep him outside on run downs.

Overview
Base end prospect for a 4-3 defense with potential to reduce inside for sub-packages. Golston has added good weight on his frame since coming to Iowa, but holding the point of attack and setting a strong edge will be a challenge for him due to his lack of play strength. While his rush off the edge is ordinary, he flashes as a disruptive interior rusher able to slip into gaps and make some noise. There are some physical traits to work with, so he could find work if he can add more strength and keep improving his rush.
Strengths
  • Named to 2020 Iowa Leadership Group.
  • Added 40 pounds of good weight during his time at Iowa.
  • Long wingspan with enormous hands.
  • Has opportunity to elevate his play with quicker hands.
  • Shows ability to turn and skinny-up into the B-gap.
  • Uses stab-and-slap move around the edge.
  • Jump-cuts into inside counter.
  • Shows some life as reduced rusher.
  • Can slap and pull himself around the guard with his length.
He is very undersized. He was 269 at the combine after already adding 40lbs to his frame. Ty craw the 2nd. At lower weight he can be more effective outside if they bulk him up to 285-290 he will just be versatile but not effective. Cowboys love to shove square pegs in round holes

Zzzzzzzz everyone here crowning quinn already relax. The defense was not good outside of getting turnovers. If you followed the falcons while he was the HC you wouldnt worship the ground he walks on

and your back ground is what exactly? You ever take a team to a SB? Quinn has, No you are a message board poster who has done nothing. A fan with an opinion. Quinn will use OTA and training camp to work guys out no more no less. He did not say Golston would be a full time DT, what I believe he is looking at is using guys in different alignments and different situations. It may work out it may not but this is a time of the year where coaches will look at players and how to maximize their effectiveness.

Quinn is using him just like he did Michael Bennett 6-4 274. End on run downs and inside pass rusher on passing downs. NYG did the same with Justin Tuck 6-5 265.

He could easily add weight to his 6'5" frame and still be effective, JJ Watt was the same height and weighed 290. Aaron Donald was four inches shorter and weighed 285

FRISCO – This time last season, Chauncey Golston was just entering his first moments in the NFL and preparing to make a leap into training camp. A leap that was hindered by a hamstring injury that limited his availability throughout the offseason as well as his production early in the regular season at the edge rusher spot.

Despite his lack of playing time early, his trajectory still pointed up as he made a significant impact both on special teams and in the defensive line rotation. This time around, during the first OTA practices, Golston is trending in a completely different direction - Inside.

Golston says he enters practice nearly 20-pounds heavier than his playing weight last season and took early snaps with both the edge rushers and interior defensive lineman. Even with the added weight, he appeared quick off the snap and was moving better than he ever did last season.

But why would he be working with a crowded room of defensive tackles with Neville Gallimore, Osa Odighizuwa, and Trysten Hill all in the fold?

Simply enough, it's a size mismatch.

"It's something that Coach Quinn has talked about since last year," Golston said. "With my long arms, it'll be tougher for inside lineman to get their hands off of me."

Mike McCarthy and Dan Quinn have been known to value the versatility of a defensive front in the past. Especially last season when nearly everyone who played on the defensive line shifted inside at some point.

Gholston, who played 126 of his 413 defensive snaps as a defensive tackle last season, fits the mold of a position versatile pass rusher. His length would be a much bigger mismatch for the shorter arms of interior lineman than it would be for the longer offensive tackle opponents. Something the defensive staff could utilize most of the time in his second season.

One concern with a full-time move, is how he'll combat the frequent double-teams. The answer seemingly has been bulking up and building a bigger frame. He has certainly done that in his first full offseason as a pro.

"I'm willing to play wherever they need me," Golston said. "I'd even suit up and play left tackle if that's what they wanted me to do. I'm not sure how well that would go, but I'd do it."

The pads have not been put on to this point, so it's easy to get carried away with the early looks from some of the more athletic defensive prospects. But early on, it appears there may be more to Golston's role than meets the eye.

Lol go watch his iowa tape he barely ever played inside and when he did he got blown off the ball and was making tackles 3-5 yards downfield. You guys jus blindly say crap with no evidence or substance just hopes and prayers. He played over 100 snaps inside last season and guess what our interior d line was atrocious as a whole

We're gonna compare him to those guys lol. Chauncey has barely played dt and when he did in college he was ineffective

Im not knocking the kid hes doing whatever the coaches ask to keep a job. I think the coaches are doing him a disservice because he doesnt play with power in his game and we're gonna jam him inside?? Would rather keep him outside and actually bring in proven interior line talent

I think Gholston could be useful as an interior pass rusher on obvious passing downs.

anything else, heck no. No way he holds up against the run.

That being said. You’re right. It shouldn’t even come to that. If the cowboys FO actually bothered to obtain quality DT talent. They are awful at it.

Lol so bad he not built for it. They tryin to make him the next ty craw lol

Actually, as a pass rusher, he stands a better chance inside where he can use quickness and technique to win than he does of beating more athletic offensive tackles. He doesn't have the explosiveness to win consistently outside.

Well, outside of Hill, which was an attempt to get a first-round-type talent in the second round, the Cowboys haven't really invested a high pick in the position since drafting Spears in 2005. That's what, 17 years, without a first-round DT.

Ppl lookin at this with rose colored glasses. Have you ever seen him effectively rush inside either in the nfl or even in college? The answer is no. In college every time he lined up inside he got pushed back 3 yards.
