I didnt see it at iowa. 90% of his plays were made from the DE position. I dont like versatility unless they are pro bowl all pro players.
I think he’s capable in terms of body type and ability and he did it enough to be mentioned by most scouting profiles of him.
I hear you on the versatility thing but if a guy is gonna be solid at one position vs solid at two why not take that? Chauncey will never be a high end pass rusher but he has the potential to be a very good DE run defender. He’ll never be a run plugger inside but he has the skills to be able to rotate in on passing downs at the 3T, especially with the 20 lbs he’s said to have put on.
For me it’s apparent his strengths are as a run defender at DE. That’s only gonna get him on the field for a fraction of snaps. If the guy can contribute on passing downs at DT then by all means let him.
I don’t think there’s any shame in trying that out in camp. If you think the guy is going to crack the pass rush rotation over Parsons, Williams, Lawrence, Armstrong, and Fowler (not to mention Basham who they like) then by all means let him spend all his time there. But you and me both know he won’t be rushing the passer so seeing if he can contribute on those downs inside is a logical idea.
One name tossed around a lot when he was drafted was T-Craw. Hate him or love him at his best he was a lunchpale guy who was a better run defender than pass rusher, the issue with him was his salary. If Chauncey is that guy with a bit more to offer on passing downs then he’s a solid part of the line for his rookie deal.
