What's the deal with the PGA?

Anyone have any idea what the hell is going on with the PGA and all these players who have been suspended?

As far as I can tell, some of the top golfers have decided to play for another organization at insane amounts of money. I read Phil will receive about $200M going forward and his career tour earnings in the PGA are only half of that as of now. And he's been around for how long?

Saw on ESPN the Roger Goodell of the PGA came on TV and said some canned statements about how the PGA has the best talent in the world (true, but why does that matter?) and players should basically expect a suspension based on previous comments. Not sure what they were, but that's what he said.

Anyway, why is this an issue? The PGA seems to have the approach that they deserve something because they've always had something. They've always been around so that has earned them the right to be the only one on the block.

Personally, I think maybe they should up the stakes a bit. If someone can go to a startup and secure a contract worth 2x what they have made in the past 30 years, why wouldn't they? It's not like there isn't enough money to go around. It's all a matter of who gets it and it seems like the PGA is more interested in being the beneficiary than they are in maintaining some sort of "prestige" or whatever word they want to use in its place.

Players make more thru their PGA golf marketing deals than do in actual earnings playing golf.
Most of the time they make many time more

First of all LIV Golf is backed by Saudi blood money isn’t like the other rival leagues we’ve seen in the AFL, ABA and USFL.

The LIV isn’t intended to profit . It’s merely formed to wash money. And a personal vendetta by Greg Norman who’s had a long standing vendetta with PGA.

This is a pure money grab by a few golfers. Most of which aren’t as competitive any longer on PGA Tour.

Also note that PGA Tour doesn’t rule over the 4 Majors in which these players can still play including the US Open this week and the Masters.

The Open( British ) hasn’t stated how they will react nor the PGA Championship which just concluded a few weeks ago .

Because it's Saudi money and unlimited. I think there's like 2 backers out of like 20 that aren't Saudi. The players weren't suspended for comments, they were suspended for joining another tour/league entirely. The PGA warned all of the players well in advance that they would not allow intermingling with another tour, as they shouldn't. The players made their choice to go for the bigger money knowing full and well it would cost them their PGA card, FedEx points, and a spot on the Ryder Cup and they chose to leave anyways. That's on them and they're welcome to play wherever they like, just not for both.

I think the controversy comes from the fact that they are playing for a Saudi backed league and several players have mentioned publicly they wouldn't be comfortable with their paycheck coming from them. There's also a 9/11 family advocacy group that sent a letter to all the suspended players condemning them for joining a Saudi backed league which I think is something a lot of Americans could understand and sympathize with. Along with that you've got some very unpopular figures as the face of the LIV Tour. There may not be two more hated golfers ever than P. Mickelson and G. Norman. You'll never meet a caddy or player who has one good thing to say about either of them. I call them the Conniving League because it seems everyone involved in it is after more than just $.

The attraction for these aging basically much less competitive big name stars is the guaranteed money.

Not only are they receiving these huge sign on bonuses up to 200 million they are guaranteed at least 120,000 to play in each tournament. They only play 54 holes instead of 72. I believe only 12 tournaments with 4 or 5 in USA. No cut line and limited competition.

It’s basically an exhibition of a few former big names and international players. With no TV rights or sponsorships . Just Saudi blood money.
