Is Kellen Moore the Real Problem on Offense?

We have all witnessed the struggle this team has toward the end of the season in recent years. While there will be people making their usual comments about Dak - and I challenge you to not and actually consider the question. There are contributing factors which cannot be answered by pointing at the QB.

Poor offensive line play
Injury
The wrong personnel being used

**There are those who suggest this team feasts on the under .500 teams solely. Defense has a hand in the final score. So this question(s) does ignore the defense and focus on offense, and I think, specifically Moore.

My opinion is the major factor of the offense stalling as the season progresses is Moore. It appears to me he gets stuck on plays - the WR screen just drives me crazy when you see it four times a half. And perhaps he is so married to his game plan he can't shift gears and make in game adjustments. All the clever things he does at times wander off his playbook page as he gets mired in a rut of a hand full of sets and plays.

Do you think he calls plays to the strength of his skill players?
Why doesn't Lamb fit the slant route to a Tee? And yet when was the last time you saw that with this team?

With two running backs, where is the clever play caller who gets both of them on the field at one time?
Fact is, where is the boy genius who devises a play that forces the defense to call a time out because they don't have the correct personnel?

When teams respond with defensive changes, have you seen Moore do anything to change his offense and take advantage of a defense?

I could be wrong about this, and expect the usual suspects will litter this thread with nonsense instead of taking the premise seriously.

But for those who actually like talking about the team and the particulars, and not just Dak hate and Zeke hate, what say you?

It's almost as if he has no plays that can beat the blitz. Teams started blitzing us a lot more toward the end of the season. And that delayed blitz killed us a lot. Dak could just audible to a run and run away from the blitz. But every time they blitz he wants to keep the back in instead of a quick toss to the back in the flat.

Zeke and Pollard were hurt and our rushing attack died because of that. So when they weren't blitzing us they'd just fall back in coverage. That two deep shell with the linebackers playing zone gave us some headaches also. And that's when Shultz picked up the slack, because Dak couldn't get it to the wideouts anymore.

So yes there are definitely some problems with Moore. When the run game isn't working he gets conservative as heck. And I'm tired of us settling for field goals from inside the 10. So he needs to run more misdirection plays around the goal line.

No, the real problem last year wasn't the offense.

Moore may have struggled some in the playoffs, but he's the most talented OC we've had in a long time.

Who was better?

Actually, not true.

We beat the snot out of teams who blitzed. We were figured out as the season went on. When teams stopped blitzing, we lost.

At least know what you're talking about if you're going to diss on Moore.

I guess you never read couch coaches post. It's the exact opposite of what you're saying. We started struggling when teams stopped blitzing us.

Yeah, teams stopped blitzing because they were getting burned so often when they did. The offense struggled when defenses stopped.

He seemed to have difficulty adjusting the second half of the season

There are far more problems within the Cowboys team than the functioning of Kellen Moore as their OC. A multitude of problems must be dealt with and resolved before this team is capable of contending for Super Bowl glory. They're still struggling to prove worthy of even approaching it. Their front office management must improve significantly before it's remotely possible. Their half-hearted efforts won't work, as long as Jerry and Stephen are in charge. They're much too content with filling the stadium, selling merchandise and generally, just being rich and famous.

Hard to see the boys having a deep post season run with the current leadership.
The Jones just don't have the ability to build a sb caliber team.
That's been proven the last 27 years.

It's an unsolved and still unexplained mystery to me. Through 6 or 7 games last year the offense had the balance and look of the 2016 style of power running mixed with opportunistic shots taken down the field.
I was actually fooled.
Then Denver happened.

And something between the OC, RB, QB and OL was never the same. The reports for the decline included injuries to the RB and QB, and the OL shuffling pieces around and Moore's inability to adjust. Or maybe all of the above.

I prefer that running style offense to return.
The one that resembled the 2016 model and temporarily fooled me. It's the only way this team can genuinely achieve success.

Moore's got a role in returning them to that style but he needs all the others mentioned to do their jobs as well.

Totally agree about the need for misdirection plays! Also it seems like he always runs an empty backfield in the red zone. You can't run a play action with an empty backfield. He needs more misdirection plays and play action. Show some kind of creativity, not the same old, same old, run of the mill Zeke straight up the gut for 1 or 2 yards and a cloud of dust, then kick a FG.

I've made no bones about disliking Moore. He has been bad at everything he's tried to do in the NFL, and only the Cowboys would keep promoting this guy for no reason. However, you can't say the offensive problems are all on him. The discipline, for example, has been absent from this team for a long, long time. That's something that our walk-about HCs are supposed to be handling. When there is really no leader between the field and Jerry in his box, you get one big steaming pile more often than not.

So is it Dak or Moore that had trouble adjusting? I'm not bashing Dak here, usually I do, but I often wonder what was the problem. How injured was Dak, can Dak read non blitzing defenses or can Moore adjust his offense. I'm really hoping it's Moore that couldn't adjust and not a Dak problem. But I'm scared it's a combination of all 3, Dak's injuries, Dak reading defenses and Moore poorly adjusting to defenses after his offense was figured out. This will be an interesting year.

. I read where Denver threw a D at us that had safeties switching, dropping down into coverage as play developed with tight coverage...all inside a cover 2 look prior to snap

He's not the lone culprit. It was a combination of several factors with Dak being one of them if not the most important. Dak just folded in the 2nd half of the season and I don't care if that was because of an injury. If you play you play, no excuses. If you can't play, stay on the sidelines. Very simple.

But I agree, Wonderboy was also an important piece of that misery puzzle. After teams had figured us out he couldn't adapt. He played the same plays over and over again, killing our rungame. Yes the O Line also folded but it's his job to cope with that.

So all in all, here's why I think we got worse on offense after game 7 despite having a 12-5 season

- Dak "lost" it (after game 7)
- Wonderboy not adapting
- O line being constantly reshuffled for the worse
- O line simply "lost" it (from game 7 on)
- Zeke ran out of gas, lost his punch
- some weird coaching decisions here and there (but we had them also during the first seven games, so...)

Now the good thing is, this upcoming season has quite a few more "worthy" opponents in our way. TB, Bengals, Rams, GB... if they win against three of those they'll get me mildly excited again. :)

MOORE is no savant at OC. He has been part of the problems.
He was promoted too soon, did not work his way up.
he has some experience now so just have to wait and see if he gets better or not.

The stupid thing was hiring big mac who usually calls plays, but he had no say in the offense and calls no plays lol.
after the fiasco at end of season last year mac makes statement he will be more involved lol, but what does that mean??
He should be able to take over play calling if he sees the need, and he should be kellens boss and kellen should do as he is told to do by mac !

But that isnt how jones boys do things lol. They set it up so mac could not bother kellen at all lol .kellen had no boss except the jones boys.

So no telling what happens now, the jones boys dont use normal logic, they use some sort of hillbilly logic I dont understand .

So who does what, and who should do what doesnt apply to cowboys, u just have to wait and see what happens as games roll along.
