Right on schedule. Another decades' old economics example strikes again.

Fact: Per usual, no lesson will be learned again.

Back to "I don't like this! Professional sports contracts are merit-based! He didn't earn that and here's why!"

Parsons is top talent, therefore will be deserving of the top money that he gets.

That's why I said you should only pay top money to top talent and not pay someone "just because it's their turn". Murray is not and will never be worth what he just got paid. I would have 100% allowed another team to make that mistake instead of being the team that makes it.
All the power to you.

The problem with that premise. Especially at QB is you are taking an even bigger risk not paying. Just my opinion. Look at the Browns. How many first overall picks have they had. Havent had a franchise QB in longer than I care to admit I have been watching football.

You don't overpay.You draft replacements.
Yup

You could either lose by trying to find an elite QB in the draft or lose by overpaying a QB not worth it, wasting years with said QB, then try and find a replacement 5 years later.

I know which one of those scenarios I'm signing up for.

If Dak's agent would have taken $33. But with a short contract which the agent always wanted to double dip, he would be looking at a new extension right now as well. Currently he'll be a free agent in 2025 so in 2024 they'll need to get him signed to a new extension also.
by 2025 if Dak does not have more playoff wins , am not sure he will be paid anywhere close. his window to show what he can do will be judged by the next 2 seasons . by 2025 there will be more options and hot rookies available,.

Speaking in terms of what it cost these days to have an above average, not elite QB.
I'd rather waste years trying to find an elite QB than waste years not even looking for an elite QB while paying an average QB elite QB money to do nothing.

You're not winning a Super Bowl either way, but at least in one scenario you're making an effort.

At the same time, you don't go wasting draft capital in a class like last season you have a Micah Parsons potentially available and when you had a horrific defence the previous season. Also, with where we were picking in 2020, there wasnt much going to fall to us. Or like this past draft where the QBs available were universally terrible. So, Jerry made the right move out of necessity with Dak, but he should have extended Dak sooner. As you and I have agreed in the past, barring any unforeseen circumstances such as injuries or other unlucky things outside of Dak's control, Dak needs to get us deeper into the playoffs. If not and if this draft class is better, then maybe this would be the season where we might draft one. Given Dak would have a couple seasons left, the smart move would be to do an Aaron Rodgers with said rookie. Keep him at the ready, but don't play him until he's ready. That's the other advantage Dak gives us if Jerry plays it smartly.

You're paying a QB everyone sees as somewhere around 12ish to 15ish the 2nd most per year.

I said it once and I'll say it again...

You should only pay top dollar for top talent, not because it's "their turn to get paid".

So who's the qb if you don't pay him, you're moving on from a 12-15 qb in the league for an unknown? Are you willing to go in qb purgatory for years?

Who cares?

You're not winning with him anyways. The only thing you're guaranteeing is tying yourself up to a middle of the pack QB for the next 5 years and not even looking to upgrade the position.

You don't pay top dollar until you find a top QB. It's too much money to tie up in a middle of the pack player.

Simple.

You may not be winning now, but many think you can win with him. You at least want to try and be in the hunt and not the bottom of the league because you're getting fired if you're the gm in that case

Every team that doesn't currently have Mahomes, Allen, Rodgers, Brady, Burrow, Herbert, or Stafford should be looking to upgrade the position UNLESS you have a really young guy on a rookie contract you believe in.

Paying your middle of the pack QB more than all but 1 of those guys listed above is a losing formula.

This is just another example of paying your franchise QB market price.

There’s only a handful of Elite QB’s, the rest of the league has to build the best they can around their QB.

This is the reality of the NFL.

You can’t continue spinning the wheel for that one in a generation Elite QB. If you find one good enough to take you to the playoffs , that’s enough to build around.

Franchises are a business and as Jethro has illustrated interesting and relative puts butts in the seats and sells merchandise .

You can’t continue putting up 4-13 seasons continuing to look for the next Elite QB. It’s simply not good business. If it happens fine but you must move on and do best you can with what you have. There’s just not enough Elite QB’s for 32 teams.
