Has Stephen Jones ever said that he would take over as GM when Jerry passes?

Jerry has said before that he would never sell the team. MANY times. There is also clear succession in place. Jerry has said that himself. I have always assumed the ownership/leadership of the team would simply transfer to Jerry's kids with Stephen taking the lead role.

While I still think that's true, has Stephen ever come out and said that? Even if Stephen had other plans, could he even come out and state them? Does the NFL have to approve the transfer of ownership?

I think he said it in a interview a few years ago, when it was brought about Jerry moving on eventually and he broke down crying just thinking about it.

I think Stephen is an improvement over Jerry in that he is less of a spotlight seeker. The problem is that they don't do the work of a GM and have that player expertise. Rather, they rely on a lot of opinions to make decisions. I think that leads to a lot of indecision and fewer roster moves.

I’m guessing he’ll takeover and, if we are unsuccessful for a few years, hopefully he’ll have the brains to hire a proper GM and just concentrate on the ownership rather than the playing side.
Being successful in his early years could actually be detrimental in the long term as he’ll become deluded like Jerry has become in thinking he a good GM.

That’s partially true because no one in the entire NFL seeks the spotlight like Jerry. Stephen is less of a spotlight guy but he still has his weekly radio show too. Where he routinely says stupid things like “we have found the secret sauce”.

You’re absolutely correct that the Jones boys are lazy when it comes to doing the normal work of a GM. No film study, very little background checking (both by their own admission!) that most GMs do. But…I will say having Will McClay has kept this franchise from drifting into fantasy football land like we were in the draft in 2008-2010.

I wish I felt better about SJ. Let’s be honest- he qualified for his job the night Daddy’s check cleared the bank to buy the team. 31 other teams would have fired him for his performance the last decade. He’s lazy and seems to honor the salary cap more than winning. Hopefully he can grow and get wiser. Hopefully he wants to win a championship enough to change. Only time will tell.

I think Stephen is right where he prefers to be....... in Jerry's shadow working behind the scenes. Most owners do not handle any daily operations of the team, and everything Dallas does gets 10X more national coverage than any other team. So, whoever is running the team is going to be in a media spotlight b/c of the teams huge national following.

The Star has its own media/ podcast broadcasts which allow the Jones boys to control the conversations around the team. Why do you think are never in the crosshairs? They own the local media. So. sure Stephen goes on these shows for scripted interviews. He gets a list of questions and decides which to answer.

I think that’s because to Jerry being the owner/GM/president and chief executive jocks and socks guy is everything he has ever dreamed of. He will not surrender the spotlight until the day he expires. I think his family knows that means everything to him and that’s why it’s never spoken of publicly.

I’m certain Stephen does not have the same passion for the Cowboys as his pop. What that means once JJ is gone, I’m not sure. Hopefully it means SJ recognizes he needs to hire some help.

Stephen already took over s GM, with Clay as his assistant and head of scouting.
Jerry hasn't been GM for years now

If you mean Owner when Jerry's number comes up, well, that will probably be a group thing
