Has Stephen Jones ever said that he would take over as GM when Jerry passes?

Can’t argue with this. And SJ has to be one of the laziest front offc people in sports. He’s not a dumb person but he’s certainly lazy. And why not. Lifetime contract regardless of results. DNA is his primary qualification…what could go wrong with that structure? Lol.

Don't think he is dumb. But his moves are dumb. This is because he knows he won't get fired for doing dumb actions like saying to the rest of the NFL that they plan to release Amari. Thus, lower his trade value.

He is risk averse because he knows it takes too much effort to succeed at his job.

I think that’s because to Jerry being the owner/GM/president and chief executive jocks and socks guy is everything he has ever dreamed of. He will not surrender the spotlight until the day he expires. I think his family knows that means everything to him and that’s why it’s never spoken of publicly.

I’m certain Stephen does not have the same passion for the Cowboys as his pop. What that means once JJ is gone, I’m not sure. Hopefully it means SJ recognizes he needs to hire some help.

I would hope he does hire a GM and get out of the way.....but that doesn't sound like something he would do. He is gonna follow the Daddy's blueprint come rain or shine. After all, the bottom line keeps going up and up. That is what his Daddy taught him.

You say "every decision", I say only the huge ones.

It's not worth arguing.
I've never been a fan of Jerry being GM....wish he would've given it up 2 decades ago.
But I really dont think he functions in that capacity anymore.
Owner, yes, GM, not really. Only in name
I guess we will have to accept we have different beliefs on this. I think Jerry is involved in every contract negotiation, has to agree to every draft pick or trade, and chooses the official hotdog weenie of the Dallas Cowboys.

I'm not so sure about that.

Income from the Cowboys and their business interests will be unlikely to match the instant 2+ billion or so each child would get and when put to work for these family members would almost certainly be in excess of the yearly returns from the business interests mentioned above.

However i'm willing to concede i don't know the families' business interests intimately. The Bowlen family were quick take a large payout when their father died. Everyone is different of course.
It would be more than that. The football team alone is valued at about $8 billion. Jerry's net worth is estimated at about $11 billion.

The 3 kids don't need $3.7 billion available to spend at all times in order to have virtually anything they want. They certainly aren't each going to liquidate all their holdings and put $3.7 billion in an interest bearing savings account to collect the annual interest while providing total liquidity. Their wealth wouldn't grow that way.

That kind of money goes into long term investments. Stocks, bonds. businesses ... These people are smart enough to know that more liquidity means less growth potential, and that growing wealth is the way not only to build and maintain whatever lifestyle they want, but also to have it be generational wealth passed down through the family.

Besides, look at Jerry ... what is it you think he is doing now that he would be deprived of if his net worth was $3.7 billion?

Yes, you know every contract negotiations since Jethro missed up RG, for sure he is in on now and probably before that one too.

I am of the school that it already is happening behind the scenes. Jerry is still frontline but a figurehead. When he does talk openly about doing this or doing that it is in accord with football executive management from head coach on up. At 80 years of age he is more fragile, there is a loss in energy, stamina, focus and he likely has less tolerance to stress. He walks so slow now, turtles are laughing at him. I appreciate him as an owner but certainly not as a GM.

Serious bye-week, mind-wandering question.

Jerry has said before that he would never sell the team. MANY times. There is also clear succession in place. Jerry has said that himself. I have always assumed the ownership/leadership of the team would simply transfer to Jerry's kids with Stephen taking the lead role.

While I still think that's true, has Stephen ever come out and said that? Even if Stephen had other plans, could he even come out and state them? Does the NFL have to approve the transfer of ownership?

I'm surprised at how many of you think it would be something that Stephen couldn't or wouldn't talk about. The succession plans have been talked about and shared by Jerry himself. Jerry's went as far as to say that it would be irresponsible to not have those discussions and have plans in place.

I have a couple of small businesses. My family and I have absolutely talked about what happens to those if something happens to me. I know my son's thoughts about taking over and I know there are some things that he would change to suit him. Some of you act like the discussions would take place completely removed of any tact, any love, which isn't the only way they could take place. No one in my house said, "When you're dead, I'm going to...." The conversations were more like, "If there comes a time that I have to make the decisions, I will probably...." I don't think I had any idea that these might be considered taboo subjects for some of you.

As far as why anyone would discuss such matters with a 5 billion dollar franchise, I would think it would be obvious. Continuity and predictability of ownership and leadership would be crucial, in my opinion.

I was just curious if Stephen has ever spoken about how the decision making structure might change if he had to make the decisions.

I see a weekend at Bernies scenario. May already be happening to some degree. I have said many times mediocrity is a state of mind. We will always be that way unless management is willing to take some risk and make some changes. Just remember the last time Jerry lifted the Lombardi trophy, neither cell phones or Viagra had been invented.

He is already running the football operations.

At this point Jerry's involvement is as the owner, not the GM.

Their current approach to free agency is all Stephen.

Jerry always over spent on free agents.

Stephen's title on their website:
CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER / EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT / DIRECTOR OF PLAYER PERSONNEL

And this is the exact reason i have been slowly losing interest in this team...nothing is going to change...unless a plane goes down with both of them on it. And, Stephen is cheap! Yippykiyay!
