Letting Cooper go was a dumb decision! Cooper commanded attention from the opposing defense. Thereby, allowing other weapons to get open. 2018, Dallas gives up a number one pick for him. 2022, Dallas trades him for a 5th round pick. His contract could have been restructured, as he was willing to restructure it. The decision was never about money.

I wasnt a fan of the Cooper trade, but at some point we have to move on. The Cowboys would have restructured him just like the Browns did and Coop would be in line for a $23MM+ cap hit each of the next two years. Gallup is 11/13/13 the next three seasons and his deal makes it super easy to cut him after this year as well. I'd rather have Cooper all things being equal, but this is apples to oranges.

We also need to keep in mind that we are getting chatter about OBJ getting a huge number on a deal, but we also need to remember the guy hasnt signed anywhere yet, and health and asking price are 99% likely to be the sticking points.

I have a feeling the Cooper decision was more tied to Lamb than it was Gallup. Fair to note that Gallup has been a huge disappointment though.

I mean the first argument can be used on any player, including Martin, Smith, Dak etc..

The argument can be had that even with his less targets last year he was a legit option in the passing game that freed up others. Gallup this year is a shell of himself, and Brown is decent depth. But neither can get separator which leads to risker passes. Cooper was an excellent route runner that could create separation.

Maybe it's coincidence, but Dak's INTs this year are much higher on average, compared to any other year he's played.

I get why Dallas moved on for future cap hits alone. But, their plan of action to replace him in 2022 didn't pan out at all.

Problem with that logic is restructuring a deal doesnt make that money go away, it just gets pushed back. With new deals needing to go out to Diggs, Lamb, even Dak in the very near future it makes a lot of sense to move Coop when they did. Would I have done it? Nope, but I at least get the logic.

Gallup is hesitant at times and I believe mentally has not quite recovered fully from the ACL tear.

Not re-signing Cooper has left the Cowboys 'chasing' at the WR position.
