Matt Reeves Teases Cloverfield's Next Monster, Kind Of

By Germain Lussier | Yahoo! News/Gizmodo
January 17, 2023

Fifteen years ago this week, audiences finally found out what Cloverfield was. After months of speculation, the found footage monster movie from producer J.J. Abrams, writer Drew Goddard, and director Matt Reeves roared into the box office and quickly became a fan favorite. Two tangentially related follow-ups came next, and now the director, who has since gone on to bigger things like the Planet of the Apes prequels and The Batman, has teased what might potentially come next.

“There’s no question it would be a viral movie, right?” Reeves said to Syfy when asked if a new Cloverfield follow-up could play into covid fears. “It would be about a virus. The funny thing about making that movie, like I said, for me, it opened up the idea of making genre movies and specifically about exploring your own feelings about things. I had such anxiety that was related to… I mean, I still have such anxiety. I think I wouldn’t be a filmmaker if I didn’t have anxiety.”

“Every movie that I’ve made is some sort of depiction of my internal anxiety,” Reeves continued. “I think today, it would absolutely come from the uncertainty of what you can’t see and the idea that being next to someone, you could catch something. There have been some really scary [viral thrillers]. Contagion is certainly really scary ... There would be a scary [Cloverfield] movie to do for sure about the spread of the virus.”

Morph's Noble X-Men: The Animated Series Exit Radically Differed from Comics Lore

G. Kendall | CBR
January 17, 2023

Debuting in X-Men: The Animated Series' opening two-parter "Night of the Sentinels," Morph has the distinction of being one of the few memorable X-characters to be created for the sole purpose of dying. Yet, Morph wasn't initially slated to appear at all, and early plans had Thunderbird losing his life during the story, broaching a taboo subject in the era's Saturday morning television.

The intended fate of Thunderbird was a nod to the comics' lore, which had the feisty mutant dying during the All-New, All-Different X-Men team's first mission. The death would serve the same purpose in animation as it did in the comics -- to stun the audience and exhibit the dangers these heroes face. Their adventures aren't harmless escapades; they're life-or-death missions with real consequences.

The Perfect Victim

When the producers were made aware of the optics of killing one of the cast's few minority members, and its only Native American character, a decision was made to create a new sacrificial lamb. Morph was conceived as a throwaway character who could die without controversy. Many fans assumed Morph to be a new creation for the series, but in fact, the character has roots that go back to the comics' Silver Age.

Introduced in 1967's X-Men #35, Changeling was a member of the villainous organization Factor Three, who later turned on its leader, "the Mutant Master," upon discovering he was an alien scheming to conquer Earth. Without his bizarre headgear, it's clear that Changeling and XTAS's Morph are the same characters.

Latest ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ casting might just mean the fans’ worst nightmare is happening

By Christian Bane | We Got This Covered
January 19, 2023

With filming just around the corner, Daredevil: Born Again is swiftly coming together, but the nearer we get to the long-awaited Disney Plus revival of the beloved Netflix series becoming a reality, fans are only growing more scared that Marvel is making a huge error with the show. To date, despite more new additions to the production being added all the time, neither of original stars Elden Hensen (Foggy Nelson) and Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page) have been announced to be returning.

Unfortunately, for those desperate to see Nelson, Murdock, & Page back together, Born Again‘s latest bit of casting may have just destroyed any chances of that happening. To be clear, the casting itself is very exciting news — Nikki M. James (The Book of Mormon, Severance), the Tony-Award winning star of stage and screen, has been hired for an undisclosed role in the 18-part streaming series.

However, the fans are convinced she’s playing DD’s new love interest and work colleague, which would effectively nullify both Foggy and Karen’s role in the show. A lot of fans are speculating that James may be portraying comic book character Kirsten McDuffie, an assistant district attorney and one of Murdock’s many romantic partners.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's New Poster Is a Spidey Smörgåsbord

By James Whitbrook | Yahoo! News/Gizmodo
January 19, 2023

There’s a lot of Spider-Folks in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. This we knew, as we pored over its trailer, as well as many slices of a poster depicting a whole legion of webslinging heroes. Now we have the full poster in glorious high quality, and it turns out? Yeah, still a lot of Spideys in this movie.

After various low-quality snippets of the poster were released across international markets last month in the wake of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’s first trailer release, Sony has now officially released a massive new poster depicting Miles hanging out, potentially literally, with his many, many, many, many amazing new friends.

Supervillains We Lost In 2022
By Margaret David | Slash Film
January 19, 2023

It's hard out there to be a bad guy. Your legitimate grievances with society go ignored until you blow up a planet over it, and then suddenly everyone's paying attention to the wrong thing. Or your legitimate grievances receive attention but go unresolved, and when you genetically engineer people to turn into dinosaurs, suddenly you're a meme. Even worse, should you get somewhere with your goals, nobody is happy with you and the heroes band up to kill you and undo your hard work. Can't we ever just talk things out? Over a lava lake with magma sharks in it?

Or, perhaps you realize you were going about things the wrong way, and you make an effort to turn the situation around. You experience regret, grow as a person, and then, well, redemption usually equals death in stories like that. As nearly all of us experienced, 2022 was particularly tough on the fine old profession of evildoing. As we ring out the last dregs of the old, let's take a moment to remember some of those we lost. To doing terrible things. For a variety of reasons. In really, really cool ways. The supervillain death class of 2022, we salute you.

EXCLUSIVE: X-Men Writer Explains Marvel and DC's Different Approaches to Continuity

By Jeremy Blum | CBR
January 19, 2023

Leah Williams -- known for her prolific Marvel work on X-Men books including X-Terminators and X-Factor before recently turning her attention to DC for Lazarus Planet: Assault on Krypton #1 -- addressed differences between the continuities of both companies.

"I think it creates a fascinating differentiation in the culture around the characters...because it's about the character mythos," Williams said in an interview with CBR, addressing DC's emphasis on making continuity a fluid concept, with all stories about their superheroes considered canon to some degree depending on the whims of the writer. DC adopted this approach with the 2021 Infinite Frontier initiative, and it marked a dramatic shift from the company's previous strategies and wrangling its complicated canon. Perhaps the most decisive of these old strategies was 2011's New 52, a total relaunch that wiped away decades of continuity.

DC's Flexible Mythos

"Everybody knows who Bruce Wayne is," Williams continued. "Everybody knows what he's like. It doesn't matter who is writing him -- everybody knows. Compared to the X-Men line, where you can get a wildly different take on a character, depending on who is writing them, what they were introduced to, and when they were brought into X-Men. It creates story dendrochronology -- these tree rings or a patchwork quilt of qualities. They become the sum of their parts, but everybody knows who Bruce Wayne is. Everybody knows who Diana is. It's mythos."

Williams, who penned the Power Girl story "Deus Ex Magicka" in Lazarus Planet: Assault on Krypton and will also write an upcoming three-part arc for the character in Action Comics, said it was "intimidating" stepping into an environment where heroes like Batman and Wonder Woman were living examples of modern mythology. After becoming accustomed to the idea of writing larger-than-life characters, however, Williams said the experience was freeing when compared to the relatively strict continuity of the X-Men books.

Wonder Man's MCU Series Starts Filming in March 2023

By Lee Freitag | CBR
January 20, 2023

Wonder Man will reportedly be the next Marvel Cinematic Universe series to begin production.

According to the latest issue of Production Weekly, the upcoming Disney+ series will begin filming in March 2023 under the working title "Callback". The first half of 2023 is looking to be a busy one for Marvel Studios, with three series and three films all set to begin production over the next few months. WandaVision spinoff Agatha: Coven of Chaos recently began filming earlier this January, with start dates for Daredevil: Born Again, Captain America: New World Order, Deadpool 3 and Thunderbolts set for February, March, May and June 2023, respectively.

Wonder Man was first announced in June 2022, with Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) attached as a producer. Andrew Guest (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Hawkeye) is an executive producer and is serving as head writer on the Disney+ series, with former Brooklyn Nine-Nine writers Madeline Walter and Paul Bradford Welsh also reportedly on board. While plot details for Wonder Man are being kept under wraps, rumors have pegged the series as a satirical look at Hollywood and the filmmaking industry.

Hot Horror: Stephen King Adaptation ‘The Boogeyman’ Moves From Streaming to Theatrical (Exclusive)

By Borys Kit | The Hollywood Reporter
January 20, 2023

The Boogeyman, the adaptation of a Stephen King short story by Disney arm 20th Century Studios, is getting a theatrical release after initially being made for the company’s streaming service Hulu.

The movie, directed by Rob Savage and produced by 21 Laps, the banner behind Stranger Things, had a surprisingly muscular test screening in December that made studio executives and producers reconsider their release strategy. (They also showed the movie to King, along with the new plans, who gave them a thumbs-up.)

The horror thriller will now open in theaters June 2.

A lot of interesting stuff there if the schedule holds.

I’m shocked at Marvel’s huge gap between The Marvels in July ‘23 and Captain America almost a year later in May ‘24.

And I’m excited to hear what the plans are for the upcoming Star Wars movie releases. I continue to be shocked that they’re not producing movies for this long. That screams of poor management for such an amazing intellectual property.

Lots of good stuff coming, thanks for sharing.

As long as the Star Wars stuff follows a trend along the lines of Andor and The Mandalorian, I'll wait.

They just need better planning. I’ll always be shocked at how little of the sequel trilogy was planned out ahead of time. They bought the property for billions of dollars and just decided to ‘wing it’ with the films.

That’s inexcusable and should have led to Kathleen Kennedy being fired. Nobody runs things as poorly as that.

And the ‘double whammy’ is that they’re now terrified to do anything else in theaters and are strictly making TV content right now. And that TV content is solely reliant on the good people in charge of it, like Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Tony Gilroy.

Whatever they decide to go for these upcoming films, the planning had better be meticulous. There’s too much at stake to muck it up again, and Star Wars deserves better.

They had far too much grey area and made things up as they went along.

J.J. Abrams is a big fan of ‘mystery boxes’ where details are saved for later. He used a lot of them in Force Awakens that were left up to the next director to fill.

A few glaring examples of poor planning.

1. Rey’s backstory. There was no clear vision of who she was and it changed multiple times.

2. Rian Johnson given far too much free rein to make drastic changes to the Star Wars mythos. Sullen, defeated, disrespectful Luke Skywalker? Rey’s parents were ‘nobody’? Tracking through hyperspace and a slow speed ‘chase’? Mary Poppins Leia? Crazy new Force powers? Smoke just casually killed off? I could go on and on.

3. Abrams coming back and course correcting most everything that Johnson did. Having to go back to the Palpatine well. It was great to see Ian McDiarmad as the Emperor again, but it was clearly not intended from the beginning of the trilogy.

4. A criminal misuse of the original trio of characters. None of them had anything close to a satisfying character arc and all deserved better.

The Sequel Trilogy had so many issues, all resulting from poor planning.

From a viewership stand point, it was my favorite trilogy. I thought the pace was good, and it was entertaining. The trilogy of movies was smoother than the others. I liked how kylo ren was active throughout the whole thing, and played a major role in the plots. He was involved in the battles, on the dark side story, and involved on the light side of the story.

I did think the 2nd movie was the weakest, and as much as I like Benicio del toro, I thought that part of the story was not good. I also did not like the final air battle. The dark side fleet should have destroyed them. The logistics of it does not make sense. If all those ships were ready to fly, I would think the tie fighters alone on each ship, not counting the actual destroyers, would be enough to wipe out the rebellion fleet.

I don't know about star wars lore, but overall i think the major and minor plots were better. I also think the 3 movies had a better put together story line as a whole compared to the other 2 trilogies, and aside from what I mentioned, it had better minor and major plots. Although there were plots in the other 2 trilogies that I really enjoyed

The growth of the characters in the plot line into the conclusion of their part of the war, was better than the other 2

It’s very interesting to see that perspective from someone. Quite unexpected.

To say nothing of the ridiculous ‘Announcement’ of the Emperor’s plans BEFORE they’re actually READY to carry them out.

I’m pretty sure a surprise attack of that fleet throughout the galaxy would have been much more effective.

Again a far different opinion from my own. Maybe our respective ages have something to do with it? I was an Original Trilogy kid so that one remains my favorite.

Connection from huge distances. Both mentally and physically. That was never done in prior films.

Also whatever Luke’s Force projection was. He could somehow make physical contact with Leia and give her ‘dice’ and then ‘fight’ with Kyle Ren (who ended up looking like an idiotic, spoiled child). But that ‘exertion’ somehow killed him? Just awful.

You were not talking about your favorite, but about planning. Maybe our viewpoints about trilogy planning is different. I was looking at it from a whole perspective of being a trilogy, where a main character and other sub characters develop into a final battle of their stage in a multi generational war. I think the 3rd trilogy was by far better planned in that regard.

The dice part I am not to sure about, but as for the projection, that does not seemed too far fetched. That seems to be the power they all have after they die. Somehow Luke tapped into to that ability predeath at the cost of his own life.

I don’t see how anyone can look at the Sequel Trilogy and try to claim it was ‘good planning’. That’s simply not true.

The dice part I am not to sure about, but as for the projection, that does not seemed too far fetched. That seems to be the power they all have after they die. Somehow Luke tapped into to that ability at the cost of his own life.

You clearly want to give them a pass on it, while I don’t.
