Re-signing Pollard or a top draft pick

I am of the opinion that hey..lets go and draft 2 running backs and pair them with Malik Davis. Three headed beast. San Fran style. Best way to win for us is this I think and it protects Dak. I hate this but we need maybe 2 let 20 walk. The $ and the injury history.

this is likely. I agree. But part of me says let 20 walk. The injuries the last 2 years concern me if we are tagging him. Kinda risky.
Lol! It’s for one season. How’s is it risky? There’s no guaranteed money beyond this upcoming season… there’s no future dead money hit. Seems it would be much riskier going into next season depending solely on an unknown at the position and Zeke! The injury was his fibula… it’s irrelevant to his performance next year!

12 mil on 1 guy when we have so many that need signed is risky. We can get 2 rb's for that same $.

The issue is, there’s no guarantee that Bijan is there. If the Giants let Barkley walk, they very well could take him one pick before us.

Best case would be

- Cut Zeke, gain tons of cap
- Transition Pollard and get a pick
- Draft Bijan
- Sign bridge veteran D’onta Freeman / Rashaad Penny (familiar with Solari) Neither cost you more than $2-3 million.
- Groom Davis as the future backup

Worst case
- Pollard walks
- Restructure Zeke
- Bijan goes 25
- Forced to start Zeke / low draft pick
I really am not I don’t see what Zeke brings to the table. I would take Gibbs but for sure I’m taking a guard in the second round. Did the defense after the kids get the majority of the rest of the pics. That doesn’t make the defensive minded fans satisfied but I think that’s what the team Needs

We have other needs than a RB as a top draft pick, mid-round at best
Robinson has great value at 26. They should take the best player available at 26. If Robinson is there, he would be the best player.

How much sense does it actually make to cut Zeke? I realize he is not living up to his contract but cutting him is a $12 million cap hit.

Is it better to let Pollard walk, get the comp pick for him, draft a running back, and hope one more of Zeke in a new offense revives him?

I’d hate to give Pollard big money and still have to pay Zeke not to play.
The way I understand it is if they cut Zeke they would gain some cap space.

As a pre June 1 cut, the Cowboys would save $4.86 million against the cap, while incurring $11.86 million in dead money. Designating Elliott as a post-June 1 cut would save $10.9 million against the cap to go with just a $5.82 million dead cap charge.

$10.9 is massive. You could essentially sign two defensive starters for that.

This is a pretty good RB class, I just don't think we need to draft one in the first.

So the way to go is to cut him after June 1st.

Tag Pollard

First round pick J. Gibbs

Offensive weaponry much improved. Let Pollard walk after 2023
This is pretty much where I am with Zeke/Pollard. I’d resign (or franchise) Pollard, cut Elliott loose, and draft a runner to pair with Tony.

I love Gibbs and wouldn’t freak with him at 26, but Tyjae Spears very much is the same type of player as Gibbs, and he could likely be had in the 3rd round. He runs like Gibbs, catches like Gibbs, and he’s a smart player with the kind of makeup you want in a player between the ears.

Obviously, if you can get Bijan Robinson at 26, you go that route… but I just don’t think he makes it there. He’s so talented, somebody will jump on him before that.

The only thing that worries me having both Pollard and Gibbs/Spears is that you won’t have a big, bruising back because Tony and either of those rookies will be speed guys, not necessarily between the tackles type (unless you’re counting Malik Davis as a short yardage runner). I would be fine with Pollard/Gibbs, but I’m not sure the team would be.

I have the same concerns w Gibbs / pollard combo. And I still do it anyways

Spears is similar to Gibbs but nowhere near as good

Gibbs is better than Bijan for me

Woah… no wonder you feel like Gibbs is better than Spears then.

It isn’t crazy though, to have Gibbs at RB1. I thought about doing that until I really dug in to Robinson, so I’m not going to give you crap about that.

Gibbs is a fantastic player, and if you planned on throwing a ton to your RB, I could see a team going Gibbs instead of Robinson (although Robinson is good catching the ball too). Gibbs catches the ball like a WR.

I like Spears more than you though. We’ll see how the combine shakes out.

Neither.

Zeke is just done at this point, but the earliest I would be looking to draft his replacement would be Charbonnet at the end of the second.

The most critical thing you should ask yourself before paying a RB would be… Is there best football in front of them or behind them????

I’m a Pollard fan but if they can’t get a good deal for him then you can’t sign him. Let him and Zeke walk and spend those resources on meat and potato players.

It will just be almost impossible to replace Pollards explosiveness.

Zeke can be replaced in about 10 minutes.

If Robinson is there at 26, they probably take him and we get the best back in the draft and have him for 4 years.

We've seen the last of good Zeke, and he left town two seasons ago.
