Kyrie Irving traded to Mavericks

If it doesn’t work out, and it being Kyrie it probably won’t the mavs have almost enough cap space for a max contract in the offseason, so what do they really have to lose? They weren’t going anywhere with Dinwiddie and DFS anyways
I agree. They lose nothing. Probably gained some respect around the league amongst players for giving him a fresh start. Really solid move.

Yeah but if all it takes is Dinwiddie….this can be a steal. Even if it fails you cleared cap space.
It also cost unprotected 2029 frp and a couple seconds. However, long term it is very good for the Mavs if they move on this off season. You keep your picks until 2029 and open up alot of possibilities. When Luka extends that 2029 will be 25thnor later anyways

Its a very good chess move

2029 makes it even better. It’s a great move. We traded a first for Wood and drafted Hardy in the second half. You can trade into the first round with no issue these days.

This had ZERO to do with Kyrie's "personality" and had everything to do with the fact the Nets didn't want to offer him a long-term contract. They made a "championship" conditional on it, so Kyrie and his people turned it down. Remember also, Nike canned him, so Kyrie is playing with that in mind as well.

One of the worst trades since Kyrie was traded to Boston and then to Brooklyn. Mavs problem is defense. Kyrie doesn’t play defense. He’s going to drive Luka away.

His personality is exactly why they didnt want to offer him a long term contract

I doubt the Mavs have actual interest in resigning Kyrie. They may say so, but its likely posturing. This is more likely about creating one amd potentially even two max salary slots

Have you been living under a rock the past two years? Yea, the trade was because Kyrie wanted out and he wanted out because they weren’t going to offer him a long term deal. But they weren’t going to offer one because of his personality.

Whether it was not getting vaccinated, wanted the gm and coach fired (Steve Nash was ultimately fired) or the tweet in regards to the antisemetic film, they were done with Kyrie and just counting down the days until his contract expired

How does signing Kyrie allow that to happen?

Signing him doesnt. Letting him leave does. Letting him leave creates a max salary slot

If he leaves and they can work out an S&T with the team signing, they could possibly create another via TPE (depending on how much salary they would have to take back)

Didn’t they have those slot(s) already?

No they had Luka and alot of midlevels. Think of it as consolidating a couple of the mid levels into a max

And where a S&T would be a major benefit, is you could essentially create an extra max slot

What’s the free agent class look like next summer?

Again, they put in a condition of a long-term contract on winning a championship. They entered into discussions, but when that condition was stipulated he asked for a trade.

After failing to negotiate terms on a long-term contract extension with the organization, Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving has issued a trade request, sources told ESPN on Friday. Irving, who will become a free agent this summer, wants out ahead of Thursday's NBA trade deadline.
