‘There’s no panic’: How Bengals are preparing to move forward without La’el Collins

The Cincinnati Bengals will be without starting right tackle La’el Collins for the rest of the year as he suffered a torn ACL and MCL against the New England Patriots in Week 16.
Collins, 29, started 15 games for the Bengals in his first season with the team and has done well in his job protecting quarterback Joe Burrow’s right side. Cincinnati’s starting five offensive linemen held the longest streak of consecutive games starting as a group in the NFL prior to his injury.
Replacing Collins won’t be an easy feat for the Bengals.

For a team that really needs OL to release you speaks volumes. Sure, there's the cap to contend with, but they have to keep their QB1 standing. He will not be coming here
Exactly. A team who needs oline help and you release supposedly one of your best signings from last season speaks volumes. McCarthy probably doesn’t want to do deal with his lack of interest.

Cowboys get last laugh over La’el Collins contract disaster with Bengals

Former Cowboys RT La’el Collins likely to be released by the Bengals

Since 2020, Collins has signed eight years and $71 million worth of contracts. He’s played 27 games and is on track to be released twice. Surely the Cowboys didn’t see cutting him working out in their favor to this extreme. Similarly, the Bengals likely believed they got a coup when they signed him last year.

At the end of the day, though, Dallas gets the last laugh.

While Collins was a force in the Bengals run game, he was wildly inconsistent in pass protection. Dehner notes in his article that Collins ranked 51st amongst tackles in Pro Football Focus’ pass-blocking grade and pass-blocking grade in true pass sets.

For context, Collins finished with a 44.3 pass-block grade, allowing 34 pressures, five sacks, and seven QB hits while committing eight penalties. That’s not the production Cincinnati expected when they signed the soon-to-be 30-year-old to a three-year, $21 million contract last offseason.

The fact the Bengals are reportedly ready to move on after one year speaks volumes about Collins’ durability, or lack thereof. He’s played a full season twice in eight years, and missed the entire 2020 season after undergoing hip surgery.

Micah broke poor La’el both mentally and physically last year in week 2.

He hasn’t been the same.

the fat boy got used to the country club of the cowboys and isn't anywhere, nor will ever be in any shape to play again. Some desperate team will sign him and release him again until fatty just retires.

Many were screaming about releasing him, but Steele was by far the better player at a much cheaper rate.
I coached for 20 years in both HS and Club. I joked with all my parents at our team meetings (but I was being serious and they knew it) I used to say that I coach because I love it (I made decent coin also) but if you make me miserable at games and practcies, one of us will be going away...... and Im pretty sure it will not be me going away.

Collins was just more trouble than he was worth and a time comes when coaches just dont want to look at a players face anymore.

Collins lied to the team (and NFL investigators).
It caused him to miss games and pick up rust.
Add to that injuries and I think all Cowboys fans were onboard with his release.

Some guys cannot handle massive success.
If the goal is to get a lifetime paycheck and you get that check then what?

If my current job gave me 30M GTD I would be insufferable and quickly looking to retirement.

He took a step back in CIN. I think playing next to Zack Martin helps an RG.

I do think he'll land elsewhere. CHI, LV, WAS, or HOU

Doesn't seem like a guy that will be re-habbing aggressively. He may be done.

Was he not projected as a first round talent at one point?
Dorance Armstrong was projected as a 1st round pick by some pre combine. If you spent anytime in Louisiana you wouldn’t, most LSU fans would have been surprised anything over a 3rd… maybe bottom 2nd. Same issues with laziness and lack of focus at times, that drove LSU fans nuts and lead to them calling into the radio shows weekly, followed him to the NFL. Fairly sure by the draft he would have dropped on draft boards once the internet draft nicks got a feel of what NFL scouts really thought.
