So instead of taking a superior prospect in say, Drew Sanders, Torrence, Hooker, Hyatt, or Mims, they reached for the highest rated TE on their board.
All those names were reportedly lower on their board. Hyatt and Torrence for sure. Hooker was flagged. They weren't going WR so Mims was out.

This shows the trouble of getting locked into need. The Cowboys were determined to draft a TE, and were evidently determined to not give up a pick to trade up. So when they got to 58, they had to take Schoonmaker. No, a comparable player wouldn't have been available in the 7th round, that's absurd, and no, Schoonmaker wouldn't have made it to 90. The TEs were flying off the board like milk the day before a snowstorm, and the Joneses knew it.

Surely if we drafted for need we'd of taken Torrence at 58?

I think folks tend to forget that it’s not necessarily just straightforward BPA like “let’s just sort our prospect ranking table and whomever is at the top, we’re taking him.”

It’s BPA mixed in with position of need. Schoonmaker (whom I’m not crazy about) walks in as a potential Day 1 starter. Conversely, if they draft Hyatt, there’s a chance he’s just the 4th/5th receiver on the roster.

Lastly, I think Schoonmaker was drafted early, but when your drafting at the back end of a round and there’s already been a significant run on the better TE prospects, you have to take the player then rather than hoping he drops to you at pick 90.

Interesting, comparing Joseph to Schoonmaker. I don’t really understand the comparison. Schoonmaker is probably going to be a solid pro. Joseph was more of a boom or bust pick. I believe the Michigan tight end is a plug and play starter for the Cowboys.
The comparison is in forcing a positional pick. They were going to draft a cornerback in round 2 in 2021 after drafting Micah and they were going to draft a TE in round 2 this year after drafting Mazi.

It's not BPA in combination with need. He has no idea what he's talking about.

BPA means in the instances you have one player graded clearly over all the others you take that player. Regardless of need.

It looked like a reach. Could be a reach that works out, like Frederick, or one that shows why we all thought it was a reach, like Trysten Hill.

Whatever. On the whole, their draft record has been good. You can find picks to criticize with every team.

Fixing on Schoonmaker being TE1 and Hyatt being maybe WR4 right now is short term thinking. Anyone who says that is fixated on current need. A worthless opinion.

If they drafted the kid from Florida St. at cornerback that went to the Chargers the board would have been ecstatic. The problem is we picked the wrong cornerback.

The runt is clueless.

The draft is nuanced which is why his binary brain doesn’t understand it.

If you’re loaded at WR and there’s a receiver you have graded at slightly higher (say, 6.92 vs. 6.90) than a DT prospect which is a position of need, you take the DT.

You should never pigeonhole a pick like that. Where you absolutely have to have this position at the next pick regardless of who is available.

Now the Sally is trying to backtrack while not damaging a nail.

Stephen actually talked about this a month ago. I guess for the clueless people like this ze/zir. This is common knowledge to anyone who actually understands the draft.

When the grades are close, nearly identical, you factor in need. That isn't a case of BPA. BPA is when the grades are not close. There is one clear cut player over all the others. In that case you take that player. You don't reach for need.

So what if Hyatt would have been the 4th WR? You shouldn't spend high draft picks based on current needs. You can't tell me Schoonmaker had the same grade as the guys I listed. Managing your team based on a mythological "window" of some sort leads to panic moves, like overdrafting a TE. A year from now, Hyatt might be WR #1 or #2. 2 years from now, every receiver we have on the roster otherwise might be gone. By the same token, if Ferguson & Hendershot turn out to be good players, we really didn't have a need at TE at all.

You spend those high draft picks on studs who you hope will be with you for 10 years, not needs. Your needs 2,3,4,5,8 years from now will be different than they are right now. Many thought we didn't need LB/DE when they took Parsons, the Joneses were locked in on taking a CB, but were foiled when both were drafted before they picked. Missing out on that "need" gave us the best player we've had since the 90s.

Your entire premise is based on an unknown but you’re convinced you know otherwise “You can’t tell me Schoonmaker had the same grade…”

How do you know that? If you find yourself wanted to post some web scout’s rating just stop.

:laugh:Several of those players made more big plays in one game that Schoonmaker did in his entire career. Drafting low impact players at lower impact positions with high draft picks to fill needs is a bad strategy, and it's exactly what Dallas did. Your feeble attempts to show otherwise aside, most here know it, whether or not they'll admit it.

So, where is the proof the Cowboys had Hyatt graded higher than Schoonmaker?

What's laughable is you're blathering about how you know, yet the league passed on Hyatt until the 3rd round.

Ah, I see what beta boy did there.

You preemptively accuse me of backtracking and then proceed to do exactly that to save face.
Apparently, you think Stephen said something profound and rocked your world in explaining the concept of BPA at a position of need.

When the grades are close, nearly identical, you factor in need.
Oh RLY? Yeah, I explained that exact thing. You simply thought they click sort on a spreadsheet and take the highest graded prospect.

Listen, the more you talk the more people realize you're an absolute charlatan when it comes to the draft.

Work on your bits and stay off the draft forum.

Schottenheimer seems convinced Schoon is going to make an impact as a receiver.

He says excited to get Luke and how the 2nd round fell. Can control the C gap. You don't realize how fast he is, Schoonmaker has legit 4.58 speed. Brings the ability to stretch the defense vertically.
