The owners can't pay more. They are hamstrung by the CAP. If they go overboard on a QB, they pay for it somewhere else on the roster. Some owners would pay more if they could stack their team with talent If they do because they want to win, then that is admirable to the fans too.
Understood . But the problem I have is owners who don't want to pay specific players what they are requesting yet they come up with all these legal loopholes to keep them from leaving.I think that is outright bull feces and cowardly.

I believe a player should be able to ask for whatever salary they desire. I also believe that the owners should be able to tell them hell no when they choose to. But if two parties cannot agree to an salary, the player should have the freedom to leave.

All of this "I don't wanna pay your desired salary and I don't want anyone else to have you" nonsense from owners with franchise tags, etc needs to stop.

What players did the Patriots go out and pay with the money save from Brady? They didn't and Brady started to see it.
I feel like this is a completely unfounded statement. Have you researched Patriot salary cap spending in the Brady era? Did they really end each year with unspent salary cap that they did not roll over inot the next year? Did they really dominate the sport for almost 20 years all the while by spending less money than the rest of the teams? Sounds ridiculous to me.

Seriously? Parlay their opportunities?

Ya. People who were not born into opportunities have a really good chance of "parlaying" opportunities. Nice way to justify hating on players #dogwhistle
These top tier athletes were born with the opportunity their attributes afford them. They parlay that into a life of glory and attention. They then parlay that into a free ride at college. They then parlay that into pro career which earns them a huge payday. Good for them and God bless America, but don't come in here with your obvious agenda and suggest that it is out of line to say that it is not possible, or even expected, that a college educated man who has made the connections afforded to him from a life in the spotlight can't settle for 35 million/yr 80 mill guaranteed and turn that into an even bigger pile.

I stand by my assertion that the thinking that these poor athletes are somehow entitled to make lifetime money for themselves and future generations in a ten year NFL career is hogwash. They do make lifetime money in that timeframe but apparently it is never enough...

the 450 million already provides money for several generations if not squandered.

When is the pile of cash big enough? Most people, like over 99% will never see even 1% of 450 million in their lives.

There has to come a time when you already have thousands of times more than "enough cash" to sustain a kingly lifestyle, and want to succeed in something more substantial than the current high score. Such a thing would be a championship.

It is greed. Pure and simple, because it is trained into us from birth to worship the god called "wealth". They used to call this god a demon by the name of "Mamon".

450 million is not only enough to be wealthy for many generations, it is enough to go out and randomly give homeless people a million dollars from time to time without a strain on the wallet.
what is your complaint then? Mahomes signed 450M contract and has gone on to win championships.... not sure what point you are trying to make. and you know if the player doesn't get it, it goes to the owner, who is already richer than 450M you were ranting about. somebody is going to get that money. its in the contract between players and the owners.

I think Brandt is talking in generalities. Tom Brady obviously took less money for a long time allowing NE to keep their defense stocked and give him some weapons. He left NE frustrated b/c NE stopped getting him weapons with the discount he gave them.

I also disagree that saving cash helps owners. As Brandt himself stated in this piece, owners are already multi-billionaires. They don't need cash. So, that argument holds no water. Owners like Jerry Jones would spend far more than the cap allows, if he could.

The fact is that there is a finite amount of money teams can use to sign players and they are obligated to spend it by the CBA. So, if Dak decided to sign a contract worth 40M a year instead of 50M, that 10M savings doesn't go into the owners pocket. It goes to another player.

You guy keep saying Brady took less...he earned 525 million during his career...I Don't know where this myth came from he took less.....
Well..... he and Kraft also used an unethical way for kraft to pay him outside of the league structure. Brady creates "charity organization" TB12 (of which he is president of course...or maybe he has some figurehead president).... and then Kraft "donates" millions and millions to it.

Hmmmmm..... I'm sure Brady doesn't benefit from that.

I think you're confusing CAP and salary. We tend to pay upfront and then try and restructure the salary into bonus....either way the money's paid.
no confusion, its all counts against the cap. paid upfront vs. paid as salary. you can't go over the cap. I think you are confusing cash flow vs. the cap.

but to your point, its all money paid. its a matter of when based on the contract.

So doesn't go to the owner as you said.
well, if a owner decides not to pay out full cap (although there is a cap floor), the money does go to the owner. also, owners can decide not to pay out more cash up front, deferring cap hit to future years, which means the cash goes to his pocket. its money management. simple.

Someone just told me about that in this thread and I was shocked. That’s insane to get away with that.

Yet you have none of that vitriol for the owners who take part in the same salary negotiations. Funny how that works.

Interesting read since we have Dak's extension around the corner

Separating Fact From Fiction Over How the NFL Salary Cap Works

Andrew Brandt puts on his professor hat to clear up some myths about cash vs. cap, stars taking less money to help the team and more.
Myth No. 2: Elite players should take less to “help the team win”

No.

Less cap? Sure. Less cash? No.

If top players, especially quarterbacks, want to facilitate the signing of other important players on the team—we can debate whether that is their role, but even if we allow for it—there is a way they can easily do that, and hundreds of players have. They can simply do a cap restructure of their contracts: converting their large salaries into signing bonuses, thereby pushing out cap charges into the future years through proration. These are cap restructures done by every team in the NFL. The player receives the exact same money he was scheduled to receive, sometimes even with better cash flow and an earlier payment schedule.

Whew, good thing we don’t have one

That's a dreamworld viewpoint.

You're asking the the owners should simply dump valuable assets just because the said asset wants to leave. Very strange viewpoint.

You are incorrect. There is a salary minimum. If the player doesn't get it, it goes to other players.

Gawdawmighty where do you guys get these screwball ideas from?

No, it doesn't.
