That’s not what I said.

At all.

I said that players need to show the team something to prove they deserve to stick around. Because teams can’t wait for year five when players hit free agency.

Wright hasn’t shown anything to indicate he deserves another ‘year of development’.

It's exactly what you said.. Team's can't wait for year 3 or 4.. in the salary cap era. Now it's 5?

There are 3rd year players here yet to show it. And just like them Wright will still be part of any competition for a roster spot.

Not sure it's all on Quinn. Quinn loves length, but long players can sometimes struggle with transitioning in and out of breaks. Wright clearly has those struggles and it is the scouting staff's job to identify it and override the coaches.
That is the thing with long, tall corners. High COG makes it difficult to flip hips.

It’s just a law of biophysics.

Nashon is a dead man walking. Zero chance to make this team barring injuries
That pick was one of the most heinous draft reaches I’ve seen regardless of team. There was a real chance he would have been there in the 6th or 7th round and Dallas went for him in the 3rd at Dan Quinn’s request.

Dallas has been an excellent drafting team over the last 10 years, but that pick is one I will never understand.

Hopefully the light comes on this season, but he really has not shown much and I agree that there is very little chance he makes the 53 man roster this year.

In a salary cap environment, teams can’t afford to wait for year 3 or 4. Either they show it or they don’t. And Wright showed so poorly that they went to every other corner on the roster. And then went out and traded for a pricey veteran. That tells us all we need to know.
When they are an rookie contracts they can.

So what is the difference. You have a player for 4 years to develop . And you need to make a decision. Keep them, depending the contract. Or Let them go To FA. Do you sign them to a 2nd contract that may cost you some cap dollars or you may get a decent deal.

Or do you sign another’s teams player that is in the same situation and possibly the same money. Or do you go the draft and hope you get a similar player, or one that will develop. But then you are waiting again to see. Therefore if the other player was ok, you may lose depth for a few years.

It is a hard call. So to me scouting needs to be really good so you can see what you have in year 2, or by the end of year two as opposed waiting until that 3rd year or a contract year. And as we seen all too often that contract year is their best, then a drop off.

I think FA needs to be revamped to allow a team to keep players up to 6 years.

They don't want to acknowledge McClay's true track record.

He will always be the complete idiot who preferred Taco Charlton over T.J. Watt.
Name me one GM who gets them all right. All of them have been complete idiots at time. Some of them more often than not.

Cool story.

But I'll stick with the topic at hand. The Cowboys were focused on a pass rushing end. They specifically were looking at two players, Charlton and Watt, and the complete idiot Will McClay determined that Taco was a better fit.

A roster filler over the DPOY and a future first ballot hall of famer

I would have fired him for it.

Other than that we are lucky to have him. I mean the guy gave you Osa, Golston and Wright with three measly 3rd round picks.

True. He also gave us a starting QB you can't stand with a fourth-round pick. Found us our starting tailback for this year in the fourth round. Etc.

I think his draft success stands up pretty well against the rest of the league. If we're just talking Charlton vs. Watt, though, then yeah, he sucked on that one.

Yeah that.....one.

We trade picks for a vet this year because his pet cat Fehoko and Tolbert(thus far) can't play.

We trade another pick for a corner because his 2nd(Joseph), 3rd(Wright) and 4th(Robinson) round picks just weren't enough capital to address the position. Interestingly his self proclaimed pet cat Robinson is now playing in the XFL three years after being drafted.

We use our 1st round pick this year on a DT because our 2nd(Hill), 3rd(Gallimore) and 6th(Bohanna) also can't play.

A 2nd(Williams) and 3rd(McGovern) and we still don't have a starting LG that isn't an OT playing out of position.

But you're right. He sucked on that.....one.

Clearly, not the only one, but you can do the same with every GM, even any you might consider the best in the game. No one should be saying that McClay is perfect, but you seem to be holding him to a standard that is higher than anyone can meet. No GM is perfect at drafting. Few are even close to perfect.

Ozzie Newsome, one of the best in the game, drafted Kyle Boller in the first round in 2003 and had to take Joe Flacco in 2008 because of the miss. That's just one mistake by Newsome, many others could be referenced.
