The price for not keeping Dalton Schultz

The front office felt like TE was a need and couldn't risk waiting until round 3 to get the player they wanted.

Schoonmamer was considered a reach at 58 overall.

Had we kept Schultz for 1 year, we could've gone Torrence, Mims, Drew Sanders, Kendre Miller or a lot of other players.

Would you rather have kept Schultz and gone with a different pick at 58?

Or are you glad the front office moved on from Dalton and that savings of $9 million this year?
Fair question.
I was always amazed by the Schultz hate on this board.
He's a solid TE. Very good pass catcher, deficient as a blocker.
Personally, when I saw that his market was not what some expected it to be, I would have worked something out.
BTW, he did NOT get 9 mil per year.
OTC lists his contract as 1 year, 6.25 mil, with 6 mil guaranteed.
The way they structured it his cap hit this year is just 2.8 mil.
They gave him 4.5 in bonus (spread over 4 years with 3 void years), a 1.5 mil guaranteed salary and a 250K roster bonus.
I would have rather kept Schultz and drafted Torrence, as Tyron's history of injuries worries me. I salivated over a Tyler/Torrence left side of the line for the next decade.
I don't dislike Schoon, just feel we drafted him a round early.
I would have kept Schultz for a year at that low number, selected Torrence in the 2nd, then looked for a blocking TE later.

One dimensional tight ends are not worth 9m a year.

Just wanted to show that you can't get your facts straight. You claimed no one in the media said it was a reach and you were wrong as usual.
Wow…a call out post…how childish …..
then again that is all you post, to argue with other fans.
do you offer any actual football content?

And I was not wrong. I said if they did it was after the draft and I did not see it…so you are wrong again.

Schultz has incentives for up to $9 million.

Contract Notes
Dalton Schultz signed a one year, $6.25 million contract with the Texans. $6 million is guaranteed including a signing bonus worth $4.5 million. $2.75 milllion in additional incentives are available. There are three void years for salary cap purposes included as part of the contract.

Travis Fredrick was considered a reach too.....this last draft was considered the best in decades for top tier Tightends....

I don't see anyone thinking he was a SPECIAL player. Frankly I was glad to seem him go; did not want to overpay him to stay.
But we shall see about Schoon. Nothing is for certain until the games are real.
@Risen Star called Schultz our best TE since Novacek, meaning even better than Witten.

But in his defense, he knows absolutely nothing about football.

His cap hit for this year is 2.8mil

Texans added 3 void years.
If he sucks, and doesn't hit his accelerators, his cap hit over two years will be 6.2mil. 2.8mil this year, 3.38 next year.

If he does well, they can extend him before his contract expires to make sure the void year prorated bonuses don't accelerate all to 2024.
So cap Jones needs to take some notes?

Overall, how it was handed was stupid.

An injury prone TE in the 2nd. Gads, I sure hope it's not back to the same ol' same ol'.

I never heard anyone in the media say he was a reach. Actually many thought he wa sa good pick.
Only fans on here say he was a reach, and those were from the typical fans that think that know better, and don't like much of anything this team does.
Lindy's has him as a 3rd/4th round talent.

So, now you know that someone else besides the fans on here consider him a reach.

No rational person would say Schoonmaker fell into the Cowboys lap. He was a 3rd round pick at best who got pushed up because of the TE run.

He does nothing for me. He's just a guy.
Unfortunately, that's what I see. Hope I'm wrong.

Just for fun, took a gander at a couple of predraft ratings for schooner. 104 and 96. 96 is late 3rd, 104 is 4th.

Randomly looked. Not hard to find that he was not rated a 2nd round talent.

PFF just ranked the top TE's in the league, and Schultz is ranked #8.

This is consistent with other rankings.

We'll see how Dallas's TE's rank at the end of the season.

I'm always for having positions filled before the draft and only having to consider possible upgrades depending on who is available. Drafting TE was a direct response to losing Schultz and not replacing him in FA. I'm not a fan of that because it's mostly treading water instead of improving. I'm a fan of replacing starters on your roster when you have better starters already on your roster.

For example, we didn't have to bring back Anthony Brown because we upgraded with Stephon Gilmore. Potentially, we didn't have to bring back Connor McGovern because we upgraded by holding on to Tyron Smith, making it possibly to play Tyler Smith at guard (with Chumwa Edoga brought in as an option just in case, or for when Tyron gets hurt). We let Noah Brown walk and brought in Brandin Cooks.

Players pushing other players off the roster is ideal. Not players being handed a starting job because we let the starter walk. Not draft picks being forced because we let the starter walk. We could ultimately end up improved at tight end by the draft pick or one of last year's rookies stepping up, but that's certainly not guaranteed.

Without Schultz, Dallas is one less JAG. His contributions were nice, but his play didn't warrant any defensive fear.

You can’t pay everyone. Schultz was asking too much for what he offered.
No doubt. Never understood which idiot convinced him he was a 15 mil/season player. He should sue them, as they cost him a lot of money.

According to rumor we offered him 12 mil/season and he turned it down. Dumb.

That's about where I've seen him, 8-12.

I think we'll miss him, but I do think Fergie is solid.

That's not really fair. Schultz is propped up by his receiving yards.

No Cowboy TE will get near the targets Schultz got last year.
