I was watching some Daryl Johnston receiving performance, specifically the 1995 game against the Broncos. I've forgotten how good it was to see him rumble up the field, after other offensive weapons were drawing a lot of attention from the defense. Such a versatile weapon.

Now, talk me off the ledge here, Hunter Leupke is clearly a comparison to Daryl, and quite favorably, too. Plenty of weapons to drop the coverage attention towards Hunter Leupke. The college stats are even more interesting.

COLLEGE stats
Rush yards per carry. Daryl, 4.9 and Hunter, 6.0
Receiving yards per reception Daryl, 10.5 and Hunter, 13.0
Scrimmage yards per reception Daryl, 5.5 and Hunter, 7.0

Yes, Daryl was more the traditional fullback role, but I think that Hunter Leupke is more of a production threat, and will hold up in pass pro as well. I don't see how Dallas can even hope that Leupke clears waivers to the practice squad.

It's going to be a versatile group in the the RB room for the Cowboys, Leupke must be a part of it, in my opinion!

I love the Luepke signing and think his skill set could fit our needs IF he can play at this level, but he has yet to wear shoulder pads at the NFL level and is an UDFA. It's more likely he doesn't make the roster than becomes half the player Moose was. But, again, love the Luepke move as we sit here today

I am on the Hunter hype train. I'm buying into his versatility and what he can offer the team from positions to special teams. I really don't think he will have a problem gaining the short/tough yards, his ten yard split time is very fast, so those 230 lbs. won't be late in getting to the hole.

I have high hopes for this kid, but comparing him to Moose.
Well, that's just Leup service ;)

I agree
Nice rushing and recieving weapon
Not a impactful blocker
He can improve his blocking, especially pass blocking but he will never be a Moose run blocker
But I think he can be a nice player who can contribute to the offense and ST
Teams don't use much I formation these days though. It's usually west coast split back and a lot of zone running.

I've seen nothing that confirms Leupke is a liability in pass protection, where have you heard that/seen that on film?

Is he a lead blocker? Let’s face it, that was what moose did and did well.

Talking about him being some kind of h-back is a different thing entirely

I want to keep Luepke and Cropper. Cropper over Turpin. Luepke over McKeon.

I've accepted the fact that my buddy jerry is going to bring zeke back.

That said I would bring him back as a fallback/ short yardage guy.

PERIOD.

I didn’t say he was a liability
I said he wasn’t as good as Moose, especially in run blocking
As for pass blocking, that’s mostly about picking up the right person than blowing people up. That he should easily learn but every draft profile I seen said he needed to improve pass protection

The nice thing about him is he’s probably more of an offensive weapon than most guys who are great blocker. He’s a really good runner and can catch the ball. I see him replacing Zeke in some of those dump off passes

I've seen lots of fullbacks hyped over the years, both w/the Cowboys and my other fav teams. Seems they always get cut or have small roles in special teams. We'll see...

Ok, not trying to be contentious here... I've seen nothing to say that Leupke is great/good/adequate/substandard in pass protection, just trying to understand.

Some comes down to if your TB prefers a lead blocker. Emmitt did. But they ran primarily a man blocking scheme.

Todays running game is more about zone schemes and allowing the RB to find the lane or cut it back side. A lead blocker becomes less useful in that scheme.

Thats why teams go with 2 TEs alot now. Bigger blockers that can help stretch both front side and back side plays.

With all that being said, I do like what Hunter can bring. But he'll really have to bring it to make the team. There is an UDFA they brought in at TE that they seem to really like and can move. So we'll see.

lll turn my white draws brown if hes half the player Moose was

Darryl could block. Pass block and into the hole. Can Leupke do that? It's critical part of the RB and FB. If they can't then a big liability. Part of the reason Pollard took so long to start to get some carries. It's and under rated part of RB that doesn't get discussed much. Zeke was really good at pass blocking
