'The Education of Trey Lance': Dallas Cowboys Coach Analyzes Progress of Dak Prescott Backup

Anthony Licciardi
11/17/2023

Despite what your favorite pundit may have told you, the Dallas Cowboys didn’t trade for quarterback Trey Lance to light a fire under their franchise quarterback or give him competition out of concern for the starting job.

Dak Prescott is this team’s starting quarterback -- and a damn good one at that.

With that said, there’s a reason the former third-overall pick was traded for a late-round selection. He’s not ready to be a legitimate starting quarterback at the moment. He’s raw, a consequence of playing so infrequently. Lance has thrown 310 in-game passes since he enrolled at North Dakota State … in 2018. For reference, Prescott has 300 attempts this season.

Also worth mentioning: NFL rules mean that Lance, as the weekly third-string QB, is eligible to play only if Nos. 1 and 2 get hurt. So the calls to "Put in Lance!'' during blowouts (we're looking at you, Skip Bayless) are calls to do something that is literally illegal.

Similar to an earlier article earlier this season that detailed the simulation instruction onflield Lance goes through with the quarterback on gameday hours before kickoff.

Right off the bat the writer intentionally gets it wrong...

We know why...

there’s a reason the former third-overall pick was traded for a late-round selection.

Uhhh, a 4th round pick IS NOT a late round selection. It's a MID ROUND draft selection. Big difference.

'America's Cowboy' - when you stated 'Right off the bat the writer intentionally got it wrong....' - I thought you were pointing to the writer's first line of his article:
'Despite what your FAVORITE PUNDIT may have told you...'

He's not mine. I don't listen to him because of his incorrect rants.
I don't watch him either.
I just read the article and saw the author emphasized 'favorite pundit' by underlining the two words. He later mentioned him by name in the same article.

I just can’t get past Shanahan giving up on him…..if he had ANY potential at all they wouldn’t have let him go. I trust his judgement more than Jerrys when it comes to evaluating Qb talent….and any sane person should too.

I think the GM was shopping him before the draft.

They got a lot of value out of Purdy.

We are incredibly lucky that Lance had the two freak injuries.

Otherwise the trade doesn’t happen.

Maybe check out some videos of Lance.

The kid is talented.

Article starts out with stats about how few snaps Lance has played as an explanation for why he hasn't shown any promise yet in the NFL. It concludes with an endorsement of a strategy that all but ensures that he gets no snaps going forward. Some people are actually just playing checkers.

In Skips defense… I think he is suggesting some of these easier games on the schedule are a good time to have Lance on the game day roster (not only as emergency qb) so if/when there is a large lead he can get some game experience. The argument against his is frequently that he doesn’t have many pass attempts… How will he ever get more pass attempts if he isn’t in the game?
I would be fine with him as the #2 QB when we play Giants/Panthers type opponents. Rush is Rush. We know what is there. Find out what the kid can do & give him a chance to prove himself a bit.

If he can develop into a solid starter, I’d be amazed….but even if he merely developed into a reliable effective backup it would be worth the 4th round pick

Well therein lies the problem we don't know if the game going to be easier or not just because the opponent coming up looks easy you cannot sit Cooper rush Cooper rush and some of these other guys including let's talk about everyone pining for the new wide receiver in Bryant they want him on the field too and I say that Cooper rush needs to work with this offense and also tolbert needs the work and if we're gonna get other guys involved it needs to be jalen brooks first that is a fact and if you had induced Vaughn could use some work these other players that fan base keeps pining to see it's not their time we do not need to see them this year because if we do we know there's a big problem...

They are simply insurance policies right now... I do not want to see Trey Lance throwing to martavius Bryant.

that is not what we need this is a new offense and what I said above holds true those other guys need the work Cooper rush needs that mop up duty just as much as Trey Lance if not more because if something happens to Prescott we need Cooper rush to have had at least some live snaps with this wr group...

So this is not only skip I see this all over the Internet Facebook here and other places that want these other names on the field and I'm telling them right now that is a mistake it's not necessary now somehow the last game of the year means nothing at all to anything in the division or the playoffs then yeah you'll probably see Trey Lance throwing the martavius Bryant in the last game of the season because Cooper rush will start and at halftime they will put in Trey Lance that I can see happening if that last game means nothing...

Don't forget the 9ers have Purdy. So Lance was tradable commodity. I trust his judgement more than Jerry also. But as an organization they had a 2nd round value on him. So for the Cowboys, getting him for a 4th and giving him a chance to develop and not use a 1st round pick on a QB was worth the risk.

And since we draft a qb only every 5 years at a 4th or higher round I guess I should be thankful we're at least trying to add depth

I think there is a real chance Lance is QB#2 next year, from there we should all hope he pushes QB#1 for the job..nothing against Dak he is a good QB but if all things ARE EQUAL-big if here- then give me the younger cheaper QB.. "Nothing personal its just business"
