I agree that day 1 FA sigings have a low success rate and are typically overpaid, but I would also say the last 10+ years of cheap FA signings by the Cowboys haven't benefited them much at all.

You see a team keeping up with the niners? That’s the reality of the situation. Championship caliber teams are making real moves while some think the penny pinching and usual approach will get different results this time around. Nah man. After the playoff loss it's clear the defense needs depth and quality at certain positions.

It would not have been much to at least attempt to fill some holes while not crippling the future. No one was expecting Chris Jones or Patrick Queen.

Restructuring contracts to sign a Lavonte David type LB and a solid $8M a year big DT and leave the offense as is with a draft RB.....at least you could have squinted and said "ok that is a legit attempt to get better"

The misconception is that fans want the Cowboys to go and over spend on every available free agent and sign 15 guys on day one. That's not reality. Not every single player signed these last 2-3 days were extremely overpaid. Dallas can't sign one of them? Ever? One year can't sign one guy at a position of need?
