Why Wait??? The ez answer is that Dak wants to wait. The longer this drags on, the more leverage he has. Negotiations begin when there is a hard deadline (training camp starting).
I disagree, the longer it drags on the more likely Dallas lets him walk and he gets nothing from them. Dak holds the short term leverage but long term he’s got one more year then can go and let some other idiot team overpay for him….or maybe find out he’s not worth the 60 million he thinks he is

One thing we can guarantee is Dak will not play forever. He is most likely at least half way done with his career. So regardless one day you'll have to replace him. Most of the time a QB does not stay on one team their whole career either especially if they don't win in the playoffs, it's practically never happened. So let's assume Dak plays here for 4 more years if he gets the extension, do you truly believe we're going to win a Super Bowl in that time? Because otherwise why does it matter if we win some games in the regular season just to lose in the first two rounds? It just doesn't matter not when you're the Cowboys who has 5 Super Bowls. All you're doing is starting the replacement search earlier and you might lose a ton of games but it just doesn't matter. The standard is not 12 wins and lose to the #7 seed in the WC round.
All true.

Wow

They are the best at getting entertainment value, bar none. The suspense is palpable, genuinely no idea which way this will go. Holdout? Franchise tag next year? Full record breaking extension? Trade? Dak walks clean after 2024?

This is crazy. Dak has been extraordinarily consistent for 8 years. Nothing is going to change between now and August. It feels like the Cowboys front office is playing Chicken with themselves.
Just like the trade option, the franchise tag can't be applied because of a clause in his current contract that bars it.

This is what we all expected.

They will extend Dak, but only after free agency happens, the draft happens and we cannot use the extra cap.

Stephen then sells you on “pie” and that the rest of the pie is for “Lamb and Micah” only to drag their extensions out as well
Hate on this all you want, but this is how everything will most likely pan out.
I'm as anti-Dak as they come but I just cant see the Joneses parting ways with him.

The more that things change, the more they stay the same.

I'll believe Dak aint gettin extended when I see it.

Until training camp??????? Is this true?? Why wait? I mean, what's the point ........this far past free agency and the draft? If this is true, they may as well give France a blank check coz the only leverage left will be if injury costs Dak to miss most of the season.

It appears from their perspective, that the extra cap from his extension has little or nothing to do with free agency per se but more about Lamb and Parsons deals.

Cowboys roster: How the starters would line up for a game right now

This is what the Dallas Cowboys roster would look like if they had to play a game today

Quarterback - Dak Prescott. It’s a given. The management (read: Stephen Jones) is indicating they will probably not work on an extension with him until training camp, but he is the starter no matter how that goes. He is a very good if not elite quarterback. His success and the success of the team is going to depend a lot on how well Mike McCarthy runs his offense this year.
Maybe they are buying time to attempt to figure out what they have in Trance.

What you wish for and what you think will happen are not the same things. You are trying to wish it into reality that they don't extend Dak. I think you're going to be disappointed.

There is absolutely no point in extending Dak as we have too many holes to be contenders on top of Dak not being the type of QB to carry a team in the playoffs. But I have so little faith in the Jones' I still think they'll do it. You trust them for some reason.

What have they done to earn that from you? Nothing. They folded to Dak last time after tagging him twice, they'll fold again.
Isn't it financially advantageous to resign him now as the salary cap may not jump as much next season?

There really isn't much sense to me to wait and resign him at the end of the season given the cap impact on the team this season and in future years.

If they were all in he would have surely been signed early doors, they bring in a couple of quality free agents and keep Tyron Smith.

Unless Prescott accepts a team friendly deal (highly unlikely arguably) then he's off (thank goodness).

all he has to do is complete short passes and not choke in big games and we will have a winner.
Remember when everybody just wanted dak to just hand the ball off so he wouldn't screw up games. Well, I do. Fat Mike's dumb-down offense for dak might work for Trey too.

I think that they going off of what Slater said. R J Ochoa always over reacts and goes off the deep in. I think that Stephen actually said that they are talking now.

Is this their pathetic attempt to play hardball? He is going to holdout.
If not signed, they have to believe he will pull a Martin the week before game 1. If not they are dumber than I thought they were.

The Jones' should have 2 options only on their mind and can base their decision accordingly.

Make a final offer to Dak. If he refuses plan to rebuild immediately.

If he accepts then fill the roster aggressively.

Trying to stay in the middle is dumb and a waste of time.

Or do they think this BS rape allegation has some wheels to it?

Kirk cousins just got $180 million at nearly 36 years old coming off an Achilles injury. Dak will absolutely be paid franchise qb money and be sought after in free agency

Yeah, but only $100 million is guaranteed to Cousins-which makes the amount that he will get called into question. Atlanta feels they have a competent squad that can win the division with a better QB. All the NFC South squads are paying guys to try to win right now.

I wonder how much patience those ownerships will show going forward. Atlanta already canned their head coach after 3 short seasons. Carolina fired their GM and several coaches. Dennis Allen has been the head coach for two seasons and Mickey Loomis is getting exposed now without Payton/Brees. Ownerships don’t learn from other squad’s failures and successes. GM’s and coaches get so little guaranteed time that they do dumb things and give large contacts to mediocre QB talent to pray to purchase a little extra job time.

I hope you’re right.
I have come to that conclusion also.
They painted themselves into this corner, the double franchise tag is what has doomed them. No agents trust them, that's why Tyron is gone. Bet we probably lose Martin next year. He must be watching this and planning his exit.
If I was Dak, I would let them draw out this negotiation, play out the year - on a way weaker team than last year. And get the hell out a dodge.
They have not/can not make this a stronger team after last year's debacle to Green Bay - and that's just straight up malpractice !
I never would have beleaved it, but it's a tank year and they are doing it right under our noses.
1 year deals on players. 1 year deals on coaches. They have not improved the team, they have very limited draft resources and need to hit on their 3 top picks after last year's nothing burger. Do i trust them to do that ? Also, Sitting on a pot of money - at least $60 million and not bothering to restructure or use a Damm dime of it ( not even counting Daks contract).
They have to be thinking they have their future QB sitting behind Rush (lance) at this point.
It's a bleak outlook I'm afraid.
They have handled everything very poorly and the cost of their ineptitude is coming due.
Sorry - long rant over.....
