Here comes that huge 10 mil per year extension!
Naw, they will give Dak a chance to seek a trade as teams will be desperate at TC and it will be clear Lance is ready.

If they released Dak today, is it a 60M dead cap hit and 36M next year? Or does that 36M get added to the dead cap for this year?

Something just seems off with this whole thing. Why announce this? There is no benefit to the club to do the extension during TC. It could all be posturing, but I don’t think we’ve seen the jones boys play it out like this before. It feels like something more is going on behind the scenes than they’re letting on.

This is obvious . They feel waiting until closer to season gives them some leverage .

Dak doesn’t want to go into season without a deal cause injuries or poor performance could lessen his value in FA.

And Cowboys don’t want to risk him bolting for FA. So it will come down to waning hours in preseason . But a deal will be done . Dak aint going anywhere .

The whole thing is a mess. Jones boys create a stupid contract that locks them in, and then fail to update it so they can get some cap relief so miss out on all available FA.

There really is no plan.

How do you figure?
They got owned by Dak and France in the original contract and the way the FO played that out.

Now they are stuck in a deal where once again the player has 100% of the leverage based on the language they put in it.

Until training camp??????? Is this true?? Why wait? I mean, what's the point ........this far past free agency and the draft? If this is true, they may as well give France a blank check coz the only leverage left will be if injury costs Dak to miss most of the season.

It appears from their perspective, that the extra cap from his extension has little or nothing to do with free agency per se but more about Lamb and Parsons deals.

Cowboys roster: How the starters would line up for a game right now

This is what the Dallas Cowboys roster would look like if they had to play a game today

Quarterback - Dak Prescott. It’s a given. The management (read: Stephen Jones) is indicating they will probably not work on an extension with him until training camp, but he is the starter no matter how that goes. He is a very good if not elite quarterback. His success and the success of the team is going to depend a lot on how well Mike McCarthy runs his offense this year.
God I hate Stephen Jones. He is worst than his father. Both are double trouble for the entire franchise for years to come.

But he won't holdout.
He will show up and say all the right things.
Put up top 10 passing stats then hit free agency and make 70M a year.
And Dallas will get an R3 comp pick in 2026. Yay!

Dallas will have CeeDee and Micah both wanting to be the highest paid at their positions and no QB.
Fun!!!

And so easy!
Oh no! There are no other QBs we can pursue! Jerry is the kind of GM that would’ve signed Nick Foles to a 7 year deal after he won SB MVP in 2018. A smart front office knows when to fricking move on and find their next guy. MOVE ON FROM STAT PADDER.

If Dak wants much more than $100 million guaranteed new money, they might move on. Guess we will find out if they feel like Dak is expendable in the summer.

Everyone saying that Dak has tons of leverage is dead wrong, unless the FO is dead set on Dak being the starting QB for another 4 years at least. Dak stands to lose some very high paying endorsement deals if he tries another squad in 2025-the other team will be expecting him to produce with a likely lesser squad too. Not sure which other teams would be potential suitors next offseason. New York Giants, Seattle, Minnesota, Tennessee, Denver, and Las Vegas. I suppose Pittsburgh, but I doubt they sign anyone for big money (not how they operate). I don’t see the possibility at any other squad-and I also cannot see any of those squads spending huge cash on an aging QB that looks afraid in big games in the postseason (when the game’s outcome is still unknown).
Kirk Cousins is 35 yrs old and is coming back from an Achilles tear...............he has 1 single career playoff victory.

He got 4 yr, $180 million ($90 million fully guaranteed).

Dak is 5 years younger, extremely durable (has started 88% of available games for his career), and has twice as many playoff wins as Cousins.

To think Dak would not get north of $200 million on the open market (with at least half guaranteed) is wishful thinking. Only question is does Dallas pay this or somebody else.

If you are Dak, what is the modern way of going about this if Dak is left to play on an expiring?

Seems like he would be smart to pull a couple of fake injuries to get through the season without a serious injury.

Or do you just hold out? You get docked pay for that, right?

Or...does Dak just fall to the ground the second he senses pressure?

I just dont see a QB playing on an expiring who could lose a lot of money from a serious injury.
Excellent points.

Dak will no hold out, he would lose too much money. In the last CBA the penalties were made so high that nobody holds out anymore.

I dont see Dak faking injuries either.

The most likely scenario is that if the QB is playing on an expiring, the odds are that they are going to play a little more cautious. Dont expect that QB to hang in the pocket that extra second and get de-cleated waiting for the WR down field to get open. I would expect way more check-downs and "safe" plays.

That is probably why you never see franchise QBs playing on an expiring contract, other than Kirk Cousins.

The NFL considers Kirk a better pure passer than DAK, smarter, better pocket awr, better accuracy etc.
Some of you will be very surprised when he becomes a FA the offer he finally signs for.
Patience as the PAPPY has a good track record predicting the future............ :muttley:
