The problem is you are talking about the Dallas Cowboys here.

If you were to bet your mortgage on him not getting extended, that'd likely be a dumb bet. Granted, if you were betting your mortgage on him getting extended, that's likely a dumb bet too. That's how unpredictable the Jones' are.
It's funny, their actions could lead you to believe they are NOT extending him, yet I know deep down 100% certain they ARE extending him. Which, when they do, I'll be thoroughly annoyed at how they handled this off-season.

Just imagine, extending Dak for another term will be the final coffin nail in assuring us of eclipsing 30+ years of playoff futility.

Finally? I’m consistent I just don’t hate the guy.
Neither do I, but I'm not fond of the player and his failures on the field. There is a difference, but people always want to lump the two together when labeling others as haters.

I don't know Dak as a person and never will, so my comments will always be about Dak the player.

You probably feel victim to those posters on this site who make it personal and don’t offer much other then childish antics. So everyone gets lumped in I guess.

Funny thing (or sad, depending on your outlook) is that $4 million could be at least two FA signings for this front office.

But some do seem to frame the conversation like it will be easy to find Dak's replacement or that it won't take that long for the front office to just plug another QB into the position and have him either win just as many games as the team has been winning with Dak or for him to an instant improvement when it comes to how far the Cowboys would advance in the playoffs with him.

Some do seem to think that the next QB could either be found in either this season's or next season's draft class. And the implication seems to be how they'll be able to get their closer to Mahomes level QB sooner rather than later. I believe many fans are expecting a first round draft pick who can quickly come in and have the Cowboys in the NFC Championship game at least by his 2nd or 3rd year as a starter. Since one of the things used to criticize Dak is how other QBs like Hurts or Purdy have gotten to the conference championship game and Super Bowl within their first few years as starters.

Realistically it will take time to find the right guy who is the right fit for this team. But if Dak is really the main issue and if this front office has already started the process of building a true championship team. Then I believe 5 years is a fair amount of time to give them in order to build a true contending roster for the next QB and to have him and this franchise in the Super Bowl. So the way I see the sooner we move on from Dak, the sooner this front office will be tested when it comes to proving whether or not those willing to give them the benefit of the doubt were either right or wrong.
Well those people are deranged, in part, because they think Dak just blows and one of the 5-7 worst QBs in football. Don't listen to those fans, they are dumb. Dak is a good QB. He's not a great one. Regardless, it won't be easy to find a replacement that is as good, let alone better.

To me, if they move on from Dak, I expect a tough 2-3 years, at least.

It is odd. Part of me wonders if the sexual assault investigation is delaying things. The Cowboys may be willing to extend him, but are just waiting it out… And the small move is just to get some cap relief in the short term.

Then again, the investigation may have nothing to do with it… it’s odd
You are talking about the Jones'. So I mean today they could really want him extended and then tomorrow AM, Jerry decides, nah, screw that.

It's just odd. So you saved a few million this year. But the dead money hit in future years is really negligible (I mean $36MM versus $40MM is really peanuts at this point). Maybe they just used the roster bonus as a way to create two more dummy years that they could use if they decide to just restructure his base. Or maybe they are hedging bets on the Dak investigation as you said. I mean who knows at this point.

Dak will get extended, and MC will be coming up with even more excuses.
I am not sure why you are so confident about this.

You are approaching this from the Dak is good perspective. In other words, you think he's getting extended for sure because you think he's a great QB and the Jones will have to extend him. I am looking at this from the Jones' perspective where nothing they do often makes sense. I mean how in the world can you come off the season they had last year and then literally do barely anything in FA to improve the team? Nothing they do makes sense. They could simply be dragging their feet on extending Dak because they are trying to exert what little leverage they have. Or maybe they really aren't sold on him and are fine with him playing with a big cap number. Restructuring a $5MM signing bonus is such an odd move given the contract structure. The only thing that it signals to me is that no one has a clue what they are thinking here.

With Jerry, betting on his thought process seems like pure folly. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they extend him or let him play out 2024 with that cap hit.

Interesting point. It could also effect if the Cowboys were wanting to try and move Dak too. A team would be crazy to trade for a player who is going to require a massive extension and off field issues that we don't have a ton of context around yet. Not saying that's the case, but could help explain the inactivity with Daks contract all around.

They have no understanding of the salary cap and how the kicking the can down the road restructures have pushed the dead cap money into further years and making it look like more but they don't realize he got paid a lot less the first three years and his salary still only averaged around what was it $43,000,000 a year or whatever it was he still only made $43,000,000 a year they just keep pushing the money down the road so it keeps increasing his cap hit for that year and also the dead cap money when he leaves... They don't realize it's like withholding money from your regular paycheck as a spare part regular citizen and then paying him later more money asking me to take a small salary early and then keep paying them bigger money and then you have the dead cap after you leave as if like you borrowed against it... Fans don't seem to have any general understanding of that it's they blame it on the players they think the players making $59 million this year and he's not because he didn't make his full $42 million his first three seasons they kicked the can down the road and now it come due did not only pay him but the cap hit keeps keeps getting bigger and bigger but his salary remains exactly the same..
On point as always.

The Cowboys wouldn't have restructured $5 million for some quick and current cap relief without Dak's permission. This means they are in talks and an extension is in the works.

Everyone thought life after Romo would be rough. We were able to replace him overnight. If you have a quality team and you draft the right guy and you run the right system there is no rebuild. There is no waiting. There is rejuvenation. There is renewed hope.

With what Steven said that it is a priority to get Dak, Lamb and Parsons extended this off season to quote with the cap this season and in 2025, makes you wonder what they are planning.
