Could somebody explain to me why this team drafted a TE in the 2nd round?

why this team drafted a tight end in the second round. That ruined the whole draft for me. Could have gotten a linebacker or an offensive lineman, positions of need. I just didn't get it. Please let me know your opinion on this.

Just a guess, you have to look at who is drafting.
Witten was a big star, and if you have a real good TE and know how to use them, it is a good thing.

The jones boys have been looking for a new witten for a good while now, so they keep drafting them.
I was surprised, as the 2 they had were pretty good, but maybe not star caliber.

All the way back to escobar they use 2nd round picks and some lower ones on TE.

The cowboy draft philosophy / strategy is flawed, as sometimes they draft guys they dont need at the time,
when they have other needs that then dont get filled.

same reason they drafted brooks when they already has a stud in ceedee or a vet in brooks/gallup!! I don't get!

Yes, he did virtually nothing. He only had 8 catches for 65 yards and his blocking wasn’t that great. He got bad reviews in camp and during the regular season. He had a couple of drops. He was a bad pick.

No. We don't trade up anymore. You know how we don't get involved in somewhat expensive FA? We don't trade up either. Not in day 1 or day 2. We sit there and take what's left. We don't even trade back unless another team asks us to. We just sit there.

I hate this comment, but I agree lol. In this draft with the picks we have and the one we're missing, i'd LOVE for us to trade down and acquire more picks if possible!! We did trade up I think to get eric scott, for what reason i'm not sure

yes for a team that rely's solely on the draft, they dont have a good strategy for drafting.
And player analysis is often poor.

They very well could trade down this year and get Jordan Morgan, Payton Wilson, or a center.

I never said a guard. I did say an offensive lineman. A center or a tackle. Second round picks have become a waste around here.

Cowboys use 2+ TEs in about 30% of their snaps. A 2nd TE who can block and catch is an important piece of the offense. Ferg was still an unknown. Not a bad decision if looked at through a 2023 lens. Hindsight a year later is easy to do, but if not Schoon, who would they have picked? (Without benefit of hindsight) He is a rookie 2nd rounder who got over 350 offensive snaps and over 200 special teams snaps. That’s pretty good. We were lucky Ferg developed like he did.

Schultz, Dak's security blanket for several seasons, was leaving and they didn't know what they had in Ferguson, so they reached with predictable consequences.

And the sad thing is, the fans are better evaluators of talent than people within the organization. Ferguson looked good. This FO is just the worst.
