Would Cowboys consider taking Penix or Nix in 1st round?

There is always an extremely weak possibility Jerry Jones will draft a quarterback in an early round. Anything is possible. Jones is a gambler.

History has proven that yearly possibility is close to zero. The possibility could have nudged up a percentage point or two if not for the acquisition of Trey Lance. Lance is Jones current gamble in a post-Dak Prescott era. The trade effectively killed any first or second day quarterback selections.

The draft's third day holds the highest probability of Jones drafting a quarterback this month. Again, not a strong possibility but a better one than seeing it come to fruition on Thursday or Friday next week.
Well, they better start looking to the future because Dak not only is progressing he is also getting older. It's a young man's game and his time is tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.

What if Nix falls to the second and is still there when we draft? It would be a late first round talent at QB that fell to the second. It would be a bargain for "Wildcatter Jerry" with a potential he could sell the fans on for at least one season.

I think they might consider it.

They’ve shown interest in Michael Pratt, too.

While both were initially expected to go early in 2nd round there has been recently some rumors they could go late in 1st round if you have that need.

There was a write up this week in local papers how the Cowboys could trade down to gain an extra pick in 2nd or 3rd round allowing them to reach later in 1st round if you believed either of these QB’s were potential starters . They aren’t likely to be there later in 2nd round.

Teams often stretch and mortgage much to draft what they hope is their next franchise QB. And if we are considering or looking to move on from Prescott this would seem like a good move to make .

Why wait until next years draft when there is some good prospects which could be there for us in this draft. This all pends of course if we are truly prepared to move on.

I’m not sure I wouldn’t put these two QB’s close to same category as the top 4 expected to be drafted in 1st round.

Those top 3 QB’s all going to bad teams could be more of a rebuild while here they’d get at least one season behind Prescott taking over more of a playoff caliber team which I’d argue sets them more up for success.

I thought it was an interesting article while not allowed to directly post or link here.
Nope!

Be careful of what you wish for. During the post-Jimmy Johnson era, Jerry Jones has both a) felt the urgency and b) actually drafted a quarterback in a high round in 2001. When he did not have a first round pick. And he handed in the card for Quincy Carter.

Despite Will McClay's imperfections (see Taco Charlton), I trust his recommendations for the position. I do not trust Jones taking recommendations and judging who is the best player out of a bunch to pick--even with a pre-made draft chart staring back at him.

Jerry has drafted one quarterback in the first round since he has owned the team. Why would draft a 2nd round prospect now?

With all our free agent losses and our lack of activity in free agency to replace some of those players it would be crazy using our first round pick on a QB. We’ve already used our 4th round pick from this draft on a QB and we don’t have a 5th round pick. If the Cowboys are going to have any chance in 2024 they’re going to need a great draft and their first round pick needs to be on the field, not carrying a clipboard. If the team is having any thoughts of moving on from Dak after the upcoming season they’ll likely be in better position to draft a better QB prospect next year than taking one at 24 next week.

The only QB that’s developed into a franchise QB taken 24 or higher in the first round in years is Lamar Jackson. Jordan Love has a chance but the jury is still out. Hitting on a QB later in the first round isn’t likely. QBs don’t last until the 24th pick if there’s a good chance of them becoming a great QB. Yes, it’s happened but it doesn’t happen often.

I would think if Lance was in this class he'd be in that mix with penix and Nix for that 5th rated qb. No need to spend another pick in this draft on QB. They already used a 4 on him.

that would defintley solidify the Jones' as idiots without a doubt. trade for Lance, give up a 4th. and then draft a QB in first round. WHY? not saying the move of drafting a questionable QB in round one is bad, but the two moves together would make zero sense. idiots
I’ve never interpreted the acquisition of Lance to be the heir apparent.

So who do we see we could be in position to draft next year that’s better than these 2?

it would hurt me and the other dakgobblers if we pick a QB. Just picking Trey up with a 4th this year sent have of them into shock.
I hope we keep dak forever. I don't care if he wins nothing, just as long as he gets some good stats beating up bad teams. The only advice I have for him is to stay at home and quit looking for a wife at the strip clubs.

The only reason would be 1) they are moving on from Prescott which supersedes any following thoughts 2) they believed one of these were 1st round or better than any current prospects they’d be in a position to draft next year .
