Offseason/Draft Thoughts

RB is the least expensive position, has the shortest shelf life and is the easiest transition from college to NFL in the draft.

I can’t justify a RB in the top 10.
Find me a back that can get 1,500 yards and I’m good. That’s what Dak needs to be successful. I don’t want a 1,000 yard back. I want the man.

The draft mentality for the DTs has been flawed for years.
First the quick twitch stupidity and then not drafting anyone high until Mazi and even there they screwed up

They have the obsession that pass rush is first for a DT and that is FALSE. Run D is first for a DT. IF you can get pass rush from one that is a bonus but do not forget what their primary duty is. We did and for YEARS everyone and their ******** brother has worked us in the run game.

I like Jeanty but even his is not worth that high a pick.

DAs sacks total last year was the most inflated number I’ve ever seen. Half of them were blown assignment or stunts running clean…not an indicator of all about how good of a pass rusher he was.

That’s why solely using sacks as a pass rush eval tool isn’t accurate.

If Kneeland can generate a decent amount of pressure, give you 6ish sacks a season and be a great run defender that’s best case scenario IMO. You do not want him in space though.
Yeah, I think that's within Kneeland's range of outcomes. He showed some game in limited snaps this year, which for a low-production small school guy, is all I want to see. Show that you belong. But I don't see him ever being Micah Jr.

If you think some DE on your board is going to be a game changer, Kneeland's not the kind of guy who's going to block him from seeing snaps.

The three man line consists of a big 3T, NT and a 5T where many use basically another NT.

The last time we were good against the run was in Wade 3-4 one gap defense. Canty, Spears, Ratliff was our front.
There's not a team in the league that runs the Parcells style base 3-4 any more, and there hasn't for at least 10 years. The new base for NFL defenses is nickel with a 4-man line, and the "run stopping" formation is usually some amorphous bear front that you can drop out of or launch a zero blitz.

I would not draft linemen at all based on a scheme that Belichick and Parcells drew up 40 years ago. The game's moved on. Even Belichick moved on.

Offensive needs (in order):

A true #1 RB: They must get a top talent RB for this offense to be successful, I think they realize it now.
A good WR2: Cooks is gone and I haven't seen anything from the others to say they can be a threat to a defense.
A starting O-lineman: I think Martin hangs up his cleats and Steele will be traded/cut. Who gets moved to where on the line determines what position they need to bring in, or vice versa.

Defensive needs (in order):

Stud DT: IMHO, they must address this decades long deficiency with a top tier prospect while the have the opportunity to do so.
DE: D-Law maybe gone, can Kneeland take his spot fulltime? Will Williams bounce back? Can Micah hold up for 17+ games every year?
MLB: Kendricks just doesn't have it anymore. slow, late and out of position most of the time. Can Liufau do it?

Fix these 6 positions, with 6 high quality players, either via FA or through the draft and this team can succeed next year.

It would make us competitive again but still short of Championship Contender. I fear if we are successful once again Jethro will think its enough. I really would start Bass at RG and RIchards at RT for the rest of the season and see how they do; we might not have to spend a high pick on one. RB is a must BUT as deep as this years class is we can get one in the third rd or use some of our fifth picks to move up in the fourth. DT to me is the OVER RIDING priority for massive upgrade. We HAVE to be able to stop the run. LB is another big need; Kendricks is cooked, and so far liafu has not impressed. WR frankly should be addressed in FA as this years class is very weak. Our real problem of course is big and little enos. Holes should be addressed as much as possible in FA but they refuse to do so which means we all too often reach on draft day.

I can do you one better…Tony Pollard!

Dak doesn’t need a 1500 yard back to be successful and help us go further. He needs a playoff caliber roster like his buddies Mahomes, Lamar, Allen etc have.

Yea…if Edge is BPA in the early rounds zero hesitation pulling the trigger.

Think about our nickel / dime package…Micah and Abdul Carter rushing feok
the edge with Kneeland and whoever from the inside…and DeMo lurking? Gluck.

Yes, fully understand teams are in nickel the majority of times

However, you still see DC's run variations to that 3-4 alignment to defend the run. Both the Eagles/Giants in our own division for example.

He is a terrible run defender as a DE.
Terrible seems like a strong word. Not sure where he is now but a little earlier in the year he was 3rd in the NFL amongst DEs for run stops.

I acknowledge he’s 100% a pass rusher first but I terrible as a run defender seems a bit off.

Just re-watch the Saint/Raven games, they run the same play over and over again, where Parsons shoots the inside gap and they take the edge. When Quinn used Parsons off the ball in that close 49er playoff loss (1st one in SFO), he was far better.

That was an awful game for just about everyone.

Still feel like terrible is quite a stretch.

Look at the Browns take down Pittsburgh for win # 3 . Got to help the Cowboys when bad teams drafting right around Dallas pop off win’s unexpectedly.

Steelers have the look of a one and done in the playoffs having lost to Dallas and now Cleveland
