Pretty clearly shows the defense hasn't been as good as the offense. Yes the run game needs attention, but the Cowboys really need to beef up the defense. The Cowboys allowed far too many points last year. 9 games they allowed 27 or more points. Overall (at least since 2000) the offense has been a top 10 offense.

now that is points scored by the teams, right? Because your post sounds like this is about the defense.

anyway, only ONE of those teams has not even sniffed a conference championship game so if your point is about our defense maybe a chart showing how many points scored against alongside it would be a good idea.

The D has stunk yes, but I'd bet a few pieces of Canadian lumber that because our D has been so bad our offensive stats are elevated due to plenty of garbage time points/stats

I suspect that the defense would have been more successful if all four of their rotational DE's were not injured for the majority of the season. They participated in a combined 28 games out of a possible 68.

It is just a sure that the defensive backfield would have made more plays if our two former 1st Team All-Pro CBs had ever been given the opportunity to be on the field at the same time more than once. They combined for 16 games missed. It didn't help that the primary backup, rookie Caelon Carson, was lost after 5 games.

And then there was Overshown getting better every week only to be lost for the final games. I think he was a true difference maker and his injury nailed the coffin shut.

The Cowboys combined offensive rank for 2000-2024 in points scored is 6th. For points against, they are ranked 20th

interestingly, in terms of yardage, the Cowboys offense was ranked 9th and the defense was ranked 10th.

Typically, when there is a large difference in ranking between points allowed and yardage allowed, it is the result of opponents scoring TD's with their defense.

This is true in the Cowboys case. They are ranked 28th in allowing opponents to score on interception and fumble returns. \

From 2000-2024, opponents scored a total of 69 TD's when it was the Cowboys offense and not their defense that was on the field. When we adjust points against the defense by subtracting these return numbers from all team's PF numbers we find that the Cowboys offense and defense had similar ranking as is the case in yardage.

I put this up there with Dak's almost MVP and Garrett's Coach of the year award

Question for the Original Poster. Do all the TD's and turnovers the defense caused count towards points scored or does the offense get all the credit?

Over 24 seasons, I imagine the effect of defensive scoring + turnovers on this graph would be inconsequential.

Dallas has had good offenses from pretty much at least 2007 to 2024.

We scored a lot in the Romo years. Problem was our defense couldn’t stop anyone consistently. A tragedy really.

I'm pretty sure DAL is the only team on that list that didn't go to the SB during that time frame
Since 2000 as per the title parameters:

Dallas is the only team on that list to not win a SB.

Dallas is the only team on that list to not play in a SB.

Dallas is the only team on that list to not win a CCG.

Dallas is the only team on that list to not play in a CCG.

BD, the problems with this team the last decade have usually been centered around the defense man. No doubt. We are about to have our third DC in three years. Would be nice to have some stability there.

Yep. I really thought Harris would replace DQ when he split.

stability without ability is meaningless
look at all the stability we had with Garrett.

Jerry's teams are lopsided on spending for the offense, they are always near the top of the NFL list. Conversely they are always near the bottom on defense,,, not much pie left at that point!

I've got the best way to draft very good draft picks to seriously beef up the defense and still get a few playmakers on offense.

I wonder whats the stats for defense. Also is that the average? Getting the avg doesn't tell the full story. I would like to see how they built this stat.

It’s not an average…it’s just total team points scored (by both offense and defense) since 2000

I agree with your statement. But I’m talking about stability with Defensive Coordinators and scheme. Even under the decade of Jason Garrett, we went from a 3-4 to a 4-3, and had multiple DCs. We haven’t had a consistent defensive scheme since 2003-2010 with Parcells and Wade.
