Cowboys talked with Trey Lance last year regarding a contract extension

So, did Trey not get to play because he didn't sign the contract?

Remember Cooper Rush didn't get his incentive when they finally let Trey start one game.

I hope Jerry is not this cheap n petty.
You know that is a really good question. I would love to know when he was offered that contract and when he turned it down. I didn’t understand why they kept playing Rush when the season was basically over. Maybe it was out of spite. All Rush did was screw up our draft slot and then Jerry screwed him out of an incentive.

Naw they thought he was worth more than he was. As did I.
Before today I was hoping we would resign Lance. I like the idea of a cheap developmental QB with potential. Now Milton is on the team so I’m good. I got my developmental guy.

I think for Lance he made a bad financial decision. If he bet on himself and it’s April and no one offered him a contract, I’d be calling the Cowboys and see if I can resign. He could have made about a million or so. In the CFL he’s not making anything close. Purely financial thinking, it was a poor decision. If he goes to the CFL for reps and then tries an NFL comeback then it might be a good football decision. But I think Lance screwed up.

But I’m more excited about Milton being the developmental QB than Lance so I’m happy today about how it worked out.

I'm not sure McCarthy had much of a choice. Honestly this is exactly why it was a terrible idea to let your coaching staff all play out their deals. With McCarthy and his entire staff about to be free agents the development of young guys starts to go out the window.
The decision last spring when Jerry decided not to fire McCarthy and keep him and his staff all on expiring contracts is one of the dumbest of JJs many dumb moves.

He has now played that “Coach on the last year of his contract” gambit 4 times, and 3 of them resulted in a losing season and/or no playoffs.

Once they resigned Dak they had no interest in seeing Lance with the starters.

If he sucks then they’re fools for trading for him.

If he was great then they’re even bigger fools for signing the loser Dak.

They like the idea of not knowing better. Ignorance is bliss.
It’s obvious the reason Rush was starting was McCarthy thought it gave us the best chance to win. Poor guy was trying to either save his job in Dallas or at least look good enough to get a job elsewhere. It’s also pretty obvious the entire league thinks Trey Lance sucks or he would be signed somewhere right now. That being said, I agree with you. Lance should have been starting after Dak got hurt. At that point we were 3-5 and there is absolutely no way Rush was going to get the 7 or 8 wins needed to make the playoffs. I think we would have gone 1-8 with Lance as the starter which would have us drafting 5th right now. Imagine sitting at 5th and someone like Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter fell in our lap. I would say even a QB but thanks to our idiot front office we are stuck with our underperforming and grossly overpaid QB for the next several years.

I think Jerry was terrified that Lance would play just as well as loser Dak was playing before the injury (wouldn’t have been hard. Rush outplayed Dak last year) so he didn’t want to look like a bigger fool for giving him that contract.

Jerry even said that he thought the offense would be ran better with Rush at QB. When he says that he was clearly regretting that Dak contract.

So there was no way he wanted both the 2nd stinger AND 3rd stringer to be just as formidable as the guy you made the highest paid player ever.

Good for him. He saw the way things are around here & knew if he wanted to have a chance he needed to go to a football organization even if its the CFL.
LOL, except even they haven't signed him, because he doesn't really fit their game. With three downs, it is more about being a quality passer. Maybe the UFL will give him a look.

The whole thought process of the organization is flawed. They are paying a mediocre/average starting QB like he is an elite QB. That contract hinders them from surrounding him with the elite players that would be needed to elevate his play. They should have just let him walk and collected that 3rd round comp pick. Then they could have scooped up a cheap veteran while looking to draft the next QB. Actually, they should have been drafting QBs prior to the end of his last contract so we weren’t left being desperate by having to trade for other team’s trash (Lance). Our front office is never proactive or looking toward the future. Being reactive instead of proactive is not the way to run a team.

Not only that, but when Jerry gives you a big contract you’re safe.

He will not bring in competition that could threaten your position.

He would rather protect his investment than improve on the product.

After the draft if there are teams that were considering a QB in the 5th or 6th round and don’t get the guy they may contact Trance and get him in camp. Saskatchewan has secured exclusive rights to him for one year if he decides to try the CFL. Likely nothing more than a nod to Trance's Dad who played there one season.

My guess is a team will take a shot with him as an emergency QB, similar to his roll with the Cowboys last season.

They wouldn’t even give him a chance with the starters.

It’s like they were scared to death that he would either suck or be great, so they didn’t want to find out.

They’d rather let Cooper Rush play and ruin our draft position because he can’t help but win games.
He knew better than to stay.
If Dak was not given that stupid contract. It may have been different. But with Dak being signed, he knew no way he was getting a chance to compete for the starting position.

Right now, Dak may very well have been jobless with his injury, if not for stupid Jerry.
He should have just played out the year then he would be gone.
Dallas would have Trey here, and / or be looking for a true elite franchise QB.

but he still wasn't going to ever get a chance here. he needs to go somewhere & get legit reps if anyone wants to see what he's capable of.

Why get him to come back when you only let him play the LAST game of the season!!!!!??? He's better off playing in that other league he's in, get some game film, and maybe that'll help him be a little something decent
Because that's the role of a backup QB. I'm sure the reason the deal never happened is the Cowboys weren't willing to pay him as a top prospect like he was under his rookie contract.

NFL teams obviously aren't beating down the door to give him that chance. I'm sure the reason the Cowboys couldn't work out a deal is because they weren't willing to promise him anything more than a backup role and were only willing to pay on that basis.

That's kinda my point. They didn't even take advantage of the injury to give him more playing time last year. Contracts = starters in Dullus. So, his best option was to pursue other opportunities.

I don't have any information about what salary expectations or offers were. But if I'm looking to be the back up at the games most important position, I'm going to want some market value for that and escalators if I have to step in. Why would any player want to sign a deal for NFL peanuts only to end up playing a lot for a very small % of what other players pay the position for?

lol. For some reason that comment reminded me of Tyrone Crawford. Jerry sure hates to admit he is wrong on these bad contracts. However, Dak is his biggest failure by far. Dak’s agent took Jerry behind the woodshed twice. Max contract/elite money both times = win for agent. No trade clause both times = win for agent. No franchise tag in both contracts = win for agent. 4 years or less on both contracts = win for agent. All of this compounded by Jerry not coming up with a legit plan B to move on from Dak. Jerry just gifted Dak’s agent all of the leverage at every turn. Meanwhile, a real GM like Howie Roseman bailed on both Sam Bradford and Carson Wentz and ended up with 1st round picks for those two slugs.

A real GM like Howie Roseman has rebuilt the Eagles TWICE, with two different QBs, been to 3 Super Bowls winning 2, all while Dak has been the QB for the Cowboys.

I'd rather have Milton than Lance as a development guy. At least Milton hasn't proven he's hopeless yet.

That said, with the rumors of this and the FO's interest in Lock and Brissett, it really feels like they lucked into the best outcome.
