Swapping 5th for 7th chart value

why would you want your backup to be anything but developmental unless you're a guaranteed deep playoff run, a true team with a chance at going to the Super bowl??
Exactly. This is my point. With our current roster I feel player development is key. I don’t feel we’re Super Bowl contenders right now. So let’s try to get as much player development as possible. Since the most important position on the team is QB then developing a QB is key. If Dak goes down with injury then there’s no chance for the playoffs and I feel let’s get to developing a QB. Milton has more potential than Grier so let’s get Milton reps. If Dak goes down

The problem is with any of you thinking the Cowboys do good at drafting 4-7th round. WTH is wrong with you, how do you keep your blinders on? Why are you so brained?

24- Carson, Flournoy, Thomas, Rogers.
23- Fehoko, Richard’s, Scott, Vaughn, Brooks,
22- Ferguson, Waletzgo, Bland, Clark , Rodgeway, Harper,
21- Ball, Fehoko, Bohanna, Maquamu, Farinok,
20- Robinson, Biadasz,Anai, Dinucci,

Are y’all that blind, or is the football intelligence in here so far beyond elementary that this is pointless to argue.
THE COWBOYS DO NOT DRAFT GOOD PAST THE FIRST COUPLE ROUNDS, and that’s questionable!!!!!
Bland would like a word with you.

5th #171 value = 23

7th #217 value = 4.2

23 - 4.2 = 18.8

5th pick in 6th round, value = 18.6

Summary: They traded the equivalent of about the 5th pick of the 6th round for QB Joe Milton.

Contract with Cowboys:
3 years
1.06M average
Zero guaranteed
Milton was available because Maye didn't like having a guy over his shoulder. You got a GREAT value here.
Milton is a long-term back up IMHO but a long-term backup QB at 900K this year and 3M over 3 years is worth more than a 6th round pick.

Milton was a 6th round pick last year so it would "seem" a wash, but last year's draft was significantly better and deeper at QB than this draft.
NFL.com gave him a 5.80 grade. In this year's draft that equals Kurtis Roarke or Brady Cook. It seems extremely unlikely either makes it to the 6th round.

And Milton did give you game action of 22 of 29 passing for 241 yards and 1 rushing TD in a nearly full NFL game.

A lot of those guys have started in this league lol. They are probably league average

Dallas has definitely landed some good players in rounds 4-6. But they also horded supp picks in those rounds so have had a ton of shots at it.
By and large they miss there like every team.

Dallas did a great job with some lower rated DBs, but we also just lost our lauded DB coach which is a bit scary on the development front.

Dallas essentially lets Trey Lance and Cooper Rush leave via free agency, and saves 5-7M on the cap. They recoup the R6 in supp picks next year.
Had they signed a cheap vet back up free agent they lose an R6 supp pick due to outgoing versus incoming math and pay (much) more than the 900K Milton is going to cost this year.
This was actually very good business which is insanely from this front office.

OMG please, please quit with starting posts about Joe Milton. Its SMALL, MINOR trade. Please I beg can we stop with the J Milton topics. Please.
I think you may be overreacting a bit. I just counted, and on the first page there are only 16 Joe Milton threads and oh hell you’re right nevermind.

LOL bro it.is.insane. Can Milton compete, is Dak nervous, chances of a 6th rounder starting, value between round 5 and 7, blah blah blah. this seriously is madness. People have lost their minds caring about this move.

Here's my question;
Who is our back up QB when Dak goes down?
This is a developmental guy, not a solid number 2.
Honestly with the holes this team has and holes it will have after the season if Dak goes down I do not want a decent number 2 winning enough games that you can't get a blue chipper.

T
It's a dart throw, like most 6thish rounders.
True, but....in his one chance to play, he showed he wasn't overmatched. However, it was against a team that was playing mostly backups. So the people that are saying he was fantastic might want to consider it was more or less a preseason type game for the Bills, while the Pats pretty much were playing all their starters. The Pats SHOULD have won that game.

So for a 6th rounder....there is absolutely nothing to lose with this move. If he works out, it is a huge win. If he busts, it's the norm for a 6th rounder.

Milton has the chance to add value this season as a backup. A rookie late round pick is unlikely to play this season even if they both have similar long term potential.

Worst case, the defensive coaches probably like having a big athletic QB to simulate some of the QBs they'll face...Hurts, etc..
If Milton is dressed there will be several times a game i can see him getting on the field..TUSH PUSH anyone? this guy is a big dude might excell at it. plus keep Dak out of the train wreck.

So which is?

Competition creates production?

Or

Making your QB worried about little mistakes due to competition is a stupid GM move?

Other GMs do what Jerry is doing...no one bats an eye. Jerry is the Devil, though.

Can the story be consistent instead of having to flip flop?

Rogers didn't want competition, now these GMs are leaning into the psychology of the QB and now it's smart to not provide cocompletion?

I agree, though. You could lose a good QB to confidence issues that spring from competition. One could argue some rigid, lame, alpha male excuse "that's a weak minded QB anyway...get him out of here"

The concept does seem to be rooted in something that makes sense. Just is our case...Jerry is an idiot, though.
