Signed by Cowboys Cowboys sign OL Saahdiq Charles

A minimum deal that can compete for a spot in camp. A LSU guy.
He's got history of actually being good enough to win a starting job. But he's also got the history of getting hurt... or this last time just retiring instead.

Remember when Cole Beasley abruptly left TC, quit football.
No one cared, team talked him into returning, still no one cared.
Then when he left the team in FA, some years later, fans cared.

Not saying this guy will turn out to be a good player. But this is a good gamble to see what he may do.

Yeah this board is stupid for trashing every minor move. Sometimes guys suprise you. We've taken quite a few swings at potential this offseason. I imagine we hit on one or two.

Overview

Charles is a plus-athlete with good bend and agility but the lack of core strength could linger as a concern early in his career. He needs to play with better snap quickness and body control to help him control both the first and second phases of run blocks. He's not a waist-bender, but he does play too far forward in both run and pass blocking and defenders took advantage of that. Charles has a corral mentality in his pass sets even though he shows decent sustain and mirror once he gets locked in. His ability to recover is a big saving grace in his favor right now. He lacks desired tackle size and is still a work in progress, but he has enough traits to warrant consideration as a swing tackle with guard potential.

Strengths

Quick feet to keep rushers in front of him. Smooth redirect steps to mirror inside moves. Good awareness of lurking rush trouble. Plays with impressive reactive agility and grit to recover. Loose ankles and hips improved his anchor drop. Able to make sudden reactive movements to pick up blitz. Maintains base width in lateral slides to engage backside defenders. Accelerates feet through the block for improved sustain. Just four-year background on offensive line and is still getting better. May offer guard/tackle roster flexibility.

Weaknesses

Frame will require additional weight work and overall mass. Below-average core strength to keep blocks centered. Plays over toes, allowing push-pull specialists to yank him off-balance. Inconsistent footwork in double teams. Lunge-filled pass punch. Wide pass slides create overset concerns. Needs to close distance for better block security in punch-and-mirror. Outside hands aren't stiff and sturdy enough yet. Doesn't reset hands to recapture leverage and positioning often enough.

ROOKIE
Charles was selected by the Washington Commanders in the fourth round, 108th overall, of the 2020 NFL draft.[12] He signed his four-year rookie contract on July 22, 2020.[13] After missing the first five games of the season due to injury, Charles made his NFL debut in the Week 6 game against the New York Giants. Despite taking reps in training camp at offensive tackle, the team started him at left guard replacing Wes Martin, who had struggled in first five games as the starter.[14] Charles left the game in the first quarter due to a dislocated knee cap,[15] and was placed on injured reserve on October 24, 2020, ending his rookie season.

2nd Year
Charles had his second career start and his first at tackle in a Week 8 game against the Denver Broncos in 2021.[17] He was placed on the COVID-19 reserve list on November 9, 2021,[18] but was placed back on the active roster seven days later.[19] In the Week 15 and Week 16 games against the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, respectively, Charles started at right guard in place of Brandon Scherff who was on the team's COVID-19 reserve list. He appeared in ten games during the 2021 season.[20]

3rd YEAR
In Week 4 of the 2022 season, Charles took over at right guard after starter Trai Turner was benched. Following the game, Charles started at right guard for three straight games before Turner returning to the starting lineup in Week 8.[21] On January 6, 2023, he was placed on injured reserve.[22] He played 13 games during the 2022 season.[23]

4th YEAR
In the 2023 offseason, Charles beat out Chris Paul and won the starting left guard position.[24] He suffered a calf injury in Week 7 and was placed on injured reserve on October 28, 2023.[25] He was activated on December 15. He played 11 games during the 2023 season, all as starter.[26]

5th YEAR
On March 15, 2024, Charles signed a one-year $1.5 million deal with the Tennessee Titans.[27][28] He was awarded the starting right guard position at the beginning of training camp, but Charles unexpectedly retired from football just a few days later for unknown reasons.[29][30][31] The Titans placed him on the reserve/retired list on August 6.[32] On March 12, 2025, it was announced Charles was coming out of retirement.[33] Upon his reinstatement in the NFL, the Titans chose to release him; making him a free agent in the 2025 offseason.[34]

We're filling the roster with long shot lottery odds type of players. Johnny Walker Jerry must be feeling lucky.
Nothing wrong with adding guys like Charles and Jones as depth.

You already have your starting 5, but adding guys with experience who can start is always a good thing.

In reality, I don’t think they draft any OL.

OT - Guyton, Steele. Richard’s, Waletzko

OG - Smith, Hoffman. Bass, Thomas, Jones, Charles

OC - Beebe.

Then you have a few guys who have stuck around of they seem to like Shepley, Jack Anderson, Bostick Jr.

I’m still amazed they signed Charles AND Jones and didn’t just opt for Will Hernandez.
Didn’t they resign Shepley?

RG is going to be a battle between Jones, Charles, Hoffman, Bass, and possibly Richards.

IOL is good enough….the bigger question is OT. Can Guyton take a step forward? Can Steele pass protect at an at least serviceable level? Is Richards (or whoever else is on the roster) a passable swing tackle? I hope to see an OT drafted before the 5th personally. Not that a 3rd/4th rounder is going to solve all of our problems, but OT is too important of a position and Guyton/Steele/Richards shouldn’t make anyone feel warm and fuzzy.
I think we see Jones as a backup RG/RT, even though he'll probably get a shot at the RG spot.

Not saying we don't need better at OT, but the players we have who can play OT are Guyton, Steele, Richards, Tyler Smith, Jones and Waletzko.
